Letters to J. T. Evans, documents and some antiquarian material,

Miscellaneous correspondence, largely addressed to J. T. Evans, including personal letters, letters of recommendation, and several concerning church plate, dated 1897-1904. Correspondents include, Wilfred Cripps, Cirencester (author of 'Old English Plate', a volume much used by Evans when compiling his own volumes on church plate.); A. W. Wade-Evans; Francis Were; T. W. Barker, Carmarthen; and C. F. Egerton-Allen. The documents, 1895-1901, include: (i) Licence to the curacy of St Andrew the Great, Cambridge, to J. T. Evans from the Bishop of Ely, dated 2 Nov. 1895; (ii) Declaration of assent (to the above benefice), 3 Nov. 1895; (iii) Certificate of subscription and order of services for the parish of Stow-on-the-Wold, 25 Feb. 1899, presented to J. T. Evans on his appointment as Rector there by the Bishop of Gloucester; and (iv) A copy of a grant of authority for J. T. Evans to perform marriages by license from Arthur Becher Ellicott, Chancellor of Gloucester, 30 Oct. 1901. The antiquarian material includes: (i) Several cuttings from The Pembroke County Guardian of the antiquaries' column 'Yn Amsang ein Tadau', containing articles by J. T. Evans, 10-17 Aug. 1901 and 30 Aug.-6 Sept. 1902; and (ii) A drawing (tracing?) on brown tracing paper of a new crosier for St Davids Cathedral. 86 Pp. Indexed.

Correspondence dated 1904-1905, including enquiries about church plate from various people, particularly Helen Cripps (Countess Bismark), Cirencester, wife of Wilfred Cripps (see MS 5). Miscellaneous correspondence dated 1893-1925, largely addressed to A. W. Wade-Evans, including personal letters, letters of recommendation, and many relating to Wade-Evans's historical and antiquarian interests and activities, e.g. Welsh Mediaeval Law, Gildas and the early history of Post-Roman Wales and England. Correspondents include Sir John Rhys, Jesus College, Oxford. Also among the above letters are several others on two guards, unbound, to A. W. Wade-Evans from Newton Wade of Wade & Son Solicitors, Newport, Monmouthshire, re the history and connections of the Wade family. The documents, 1898-1901, include: (p. 13) Licence, 2 Oct. 1898, to the curacy of St Stephen's, Ealing, to A. W. Evans's publications on church plate. Also a number of letters and articles re the folklore and customs of Cascob parish (co. Rad.) and the surrounding area, sent to J. T. Evans by the Rev. J. J. Thomas and his wife, Cascob Rectory, Presteign. Other correspondents include: Helen Cripps (Countess Bismark), Cirencester; Francis Were, Bristol; H. B. Walters, British Museum; Col J. A. W. Wade-Evans (see also MS11); (iii) Licence, 1 Feb. 1908, to the curacy of St Andrew's Cardiff, from Joshua Pritchard, Bishop of Llandaff, to A. W. Wade-Evans, and also a corresponding declaration of assent; (iv) Licence, 13 Nov. 1908, to the curacy of Welsh Bicknor, Hereford, from John, Bishop of Hereford to A. W. Wade-Evans, and also a corresponding declaration of assent; and (v) Licence, 24 Nov. 1908, to the curacy of English Bicknor, Gloucestershire, from Edward Charles Sumner, Bishop of Gloucester to A. W. Correspondents include: Helen Cripps (Countess Bismark), Cirencester; T. W. Barker, Carmarthen; the Rev. Alfred E. Evans, Garthbrengy; H. J. L. J. Massé; Gwenllian Morgan, Brecon; H. B. Walters, British Museum; and Francis Were, Bristol. Several of the letters (and a printed article) concern Disestablishment and Disendowment. Two printed addresses to the Rev. D. G. Davies on his departure (after several years' service) from both Chubut, Patagonia and Llywelyn Settlement, Canada, respectively 1902 and 1904.

Miscellaneous correspondence, dated 1904-1912, addressed to A. W. Wade-Evans on a variety of subjects. The majority from A. Anscombe (Hornsey, London) re Wade-Evans's work on the history, philology, genealogy and the laws of the early Welsh. Other correspondents on these subjects include: W. J. Gruffydd, John Morris-Jones and Ifor Williams. Other subjects include Disestablishment and Disendowment of the Church in Wales, and other aspects of Wade-Evans's interest in Welsh Nationalism. Correspondents include: Col J. A. Bradney (Monmouth), the Rev. George Lewis (Gloucester), and Sir John Williams (Aberystwyth). Several letters, accounts and printed articles dated 1895-1912, relating to France Lynch National School and Parish Church, Gloucestershire, where A. W. Wade-Evans served as curate for several years. Correspondence dated 1914-1915, with several stray letters dated 1910 and 1921, largely addressed to J. T. Evans. The majority are personal and family letters, some concerning the war (1914-1918) and its problems; others (particularly those from H. B. Walters, British Museum) concern J. T. Evans's interests in church antiquities. A set of notes from H. B. Walters relating to the church plate of the North Riding of Yorkshire. Two rubbings of bell inscriptions, one of a bell at Prendergast, co. Pemb., and the other from St Davids Cathedral. Correspondents include: Helen Cripps (Countess Bismark), Cirencester, T. H. Evans, the Rev. George Lewis (Gloucester), Sir John Rhys (Oxford), and H. B. Walters (British Museum). Press cuttings, dated 1910, relating to a mediaeval chalice and paten found near Dolgellau, co. Mer. in 1890, which were bequeathed to the king, who in turn presented them to the National Museum of Wales. Amongst the cuttings is a reprint of an article on these very pieces of plate by W. Transcript of the parish register of Meline, co. Pemb., made by J. T. Evans, 1918, containing: baptisms, 1702-1812, marriages, 1702-1754, burials, 1702-1812. Between pp. 64-65 there is a typewritten later addition to the original MS, containing more entries. There are notes at the end of the volume consisting of a list of military persons and gentry taken from the register, and also a transcript of a headstone inscription from Meline churchyard. 178 Pp.
