Bethlehem Green C. M. Chapel, Neath,

Papers, 1893-1924, relating to Bethlehem Green Calvinistic Methodist Chapel, Neath, comprising financial accounts, 1893-1894, together with a list of members' contributions (ff. 1-17 verso); seventeen letters (including 2 telegrams) in Welsh and English, 1901, from the Rev. Gwilym Henry Havard to the chapel's secretary, Philip Thomas, concerning his invitation to serve as the chapel's minister (ff. 19-58 passim), together with copies of five letters from Philip Thomas in reply (ff. 18, 21, 24, 52-54, 59); and minutes in Welsh, 1924, of 'Pwyllgor Penybont' (ff. 58 recto-verso).

Correspondence, etc.,

Miscellaneous letters, 1913-1934, mostly addressed to Philip Thomas, relating mainly to his involvement in local eisteddfodau and musical events. Included are letters and papers relating to Neath Harmonic Society, 1926 (ff. 34-36), and the 1933 Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Parliamentary Bill, 1931 (ff. 47-9); verses relating to the Mari Lwyd (f. 1); a printed programme of service for Central Church, Chicago, 1922 (ff. 11-13); Thomas's adjudication for the choral competition at the Swansea National Eisteddfod, 1926 (ff. 37-41); a printed leaflet for Haslemere Music Festival, 1934 (ff. 60-61); and the tune and words of a Welsh Christmas Carol (f. 53) and of a Welsh folk-song (ff. 64-66).

Emynau a chaneuon gwerin,

A collection, [c. 1869]-1936, by Philip Thomas, of miscellaneous hymns and folk-songs in Welsh, including hymn-tunes by Thomas Hopkin Evans, Liverpool (f. 3), John Hughes, Dolgellau (ff. 4-5) and John Nicholas, Port Talbot (ff. 7 verso-8); hymn-tunes from printed detholiadau (ff. 13, 15-28); and copies of tunes for inclusion in The Journal of the Welsh Folk-Song Society, 3 (1936). Also included are facsimile copies of pages from Robert ap Huw's music manuscript (BL Addl. MS 14907) (ff. 64-71).

Cerddoriaeth,

A volume containing hymn-tunes and folk-tunes together with an index to the tunes, written in a mid-nineteenth century hand (ff. 73-209), bound together with a copy of William Owen, Prysgol, Y Perl Cerddorol... (Caernarfon, 1852) (ff. 7-72). A note in pencil on f. 1, probably in the hand of Philip Thomas, suggesting 'Shenkin Dounie, Harpist, Neath' to have been the scribe is probably an error for John Dounie [Downey], harpist, the Mera, Neath (see E. E. Williams, 'The queen of the Mera', Neath Antiquarian Society Transactions (1979), 6-7). Also included is a printed advertisement for John Ambrose Lloyd, Casgliad o Donau... (1843) (f. 210).

Tonau,

A volume containing copies in the hand of Philip Thomas of hymn-tunes by David Emlyn Evans, John Evans, Cynogfab, Horatio Richard Palmer, Joseph Parry (2), John Thomas Rees, and Arthur Sullivan.
