Transcripts of Clive's country letter books

The series comprises transcripts of Clive's original 'Country letter books', 1756-1767, now NLW, Clive of India Papers CR2. The contents of four of the original letter books have been transcribed in a single volume.

The archive consists almost entirely of Sir John Malcolm's transcript of some of Clive's papers held now at the National Library of Wales, [c. 1824]-[c. 1828], compiled for his biography of Clive, together with drafts of the biography, and an index and abstracts of some of Clive's correspondence. The fonds does not include any of Malcolm's personal and public papers, apart from a single file relating to his governorship of Bombay.

Transcripts of letters in India to Clive

The series comprises transcripts of letters, 1765-1766, (now British Library MSS Eur.G 37, boxes c. 30-42),written in India to Clive during his second and last term as governor of Bengal. The letters relate mainly to military affairs (returns and movements of troops, accounts of military disbursements, etc.); administrative matters (filling vacancies to the Council and to chiefships of stations,etc.); financial concerns (collection of revenues, the salt trade,etc.); and to relationships with the native princes.
