A one legged man takes a walk: first draft

Exercise book containing an autograph first draft of the film script 'A one legged man takes a walk'. According to a note on f. 2 the work was begun in Ydra in 1967 and continued until 1971. The present draft appears to date from 1969 (f. 1).

A Rope of Vines line drawings

Sketch book containing pen-and-ink line drawings (loose, having been torn out) some of them used for the blocks for A Rope of Vines. Some Greek material written inside covers, dated July 1964.

Papers, [c. 1928]-1970, of Brenda Chamberlain comprising correspondence, notebooks and diaries, sketch books, broadsheets, some printed material, woodcuts, sketches, slides and photographs. The collection includes a few letters sent by her mother to her father, Tom Chamberlain; and drafts of works and a notebook belonging to Peter Petts. These papers (4 large boxes, donated by Mrs Joan Rees, Bangor, June 2001) remain uncatalogued.

Draft poems

Notebook, dated May 1941 (inside cover) and used 1941-1942, containing drafts of poems, including some collected in The Green Heart; copies of poems by Alun Lewis and Dorothy Wellesley. On f. 40r-v is a list of poems, probably poems under consideration for Caseg Broadsheets. On ff. 34v-35v are notes on poems of Brenda Chamberlain published or rejected by periodicals.

Draft poems, &c.

Notebook, dated April 1950 (inside cover), containing drafts of poems, notably 'Christmas Eve' which was collected in The Green Heart, others of them appear in typed drafts in NLW MS 21485E; extracts from Flaubert's letters; prose, some relating to Tide-race and a few pen-and-ink sketches. On ff. 82-93 (inverted text) is a journal of a visit to France, October-November [1951]. From f. 94 verso to the end are notes of poems of Brenda Chamberlain published or rejected by periodicals.

Drawing book

Drawing book begun by a child and later used by Brenda Chamberlain (ff. 13, 18, 34-5 only). Includes Karl von Laer material. Dated 'New Year's Day 1954' (f. 13).

Exhibition of paintings

Notebook largely concerned with the exhibition of Brenda Chamberlain's paintings at Zwemmers in 1962, with lists of paintings, notes on them, names of purchasers, list of guests. On ff. 30-33 verso are notes on the page proofs of Tide-race. On ff. 99 verso-100 is a general note on her painting. On f. 2 is a list of poems sent for St Mary's (Paddington) Hospital Magazine 1962 (they all appear in NLW MS 21485E). Dated 'London January 1962' (f. 1).

French play

Notebook containing the beginning of a play, in French, with a cast of animals (ff. 5 verso-8) and pen-and-ink sketches including a series (with wash) for stage sets for a performance of Twelfth Night (ff. 10-17). On f. 21 verso is the idea for 'A one legged man takes a walk' (cf. NLW MSS 21495-7). On ff. 22 verso-23 is a list of poems intended for a volume of Poems with Drawings (Enitharmon Press, 1969). On f. 33 recto-verso are lists of poems sent to periodicals, 1956.

Greek material

Notebook containing Greek material largely written during a stay in a Greek nunnery, on Ydra and on Pharos. Less in the form of a journal than NLW MS 21516B, the material is now conceived as the basis of a book to be called 'Letters from my cell' (cf. f. 1 verso). Includes a few pen-and-ink sketches. Dated 'August 22 1963 London' (f. 1), and used August-October 1963.

Typescript of a journal kept by Brenda Chamberlain in Greece, January-August 1966. There are two drafts, the first on ff. 1-26, the second on ff. 27-56. Both are given the title 'Total Eclipse of the Sun'. Part of the second draft was published under this title in Mabon, vol. I, no. 5.

Notebook containing Greek material, mainly a journal written on Ydra from 24 May (the date of her arrival) until July 1963. This journal was conceived as the basis of a book to be called 'Letters from Ydra' (cf. ff. 1 verso, 25) which later developed into A Rope of Vines, together with some pen-and-ink sketches.

Letters to Brenda Chamberlain

Some forty letters, 1952-1971, to Brenda Chamberlain from Karl von Laer of Löhne, West Germany, and his close relatives and friends, many of the letters being illustrated with sketches. Several of them inspired passages in The Water-Castle (see NLW MS 22493C, ff. 234-247).
