Miscellaneous drawings by Ceri Richards comprising a Christmas card, c. 1930; a series of nine preliminary sketches, [November 1953], in pencil and ink, for the decorations executed by him on four copies of the first edition of Dylan Thomas's Collected Poems (1952) (see note to 544 and 581, below); a signed collage entitled 'Hammerklavier' presented to the artist's daughter, Rachel, Christmas 1953, together with four printed cards announcing his exhibition of lithographs on the 'Hammerklavier' theme, 1959, each with different original decorations by the artist in crayon and ink (see 544, below). Also included are an untitled, numbered lithograph signed by Frances Richards, [1970s], and miscellaneous notes, [?late 1940s], by Ceri Richards, comprising notes for a lecture on art, and transcripts, in English translation, of writings on art by Henri Matisse.

Over one hundred and twenty letters, 1928-80 (correspondents A-M), to Ceri and Frances Richards, many of them concerned with their work as artists, together with one letter, 1985, to the artists' daughters. The correspondents include Francis Bacon (1) [1940s], Benjamin Britten (1) 1957, R. A. Butler (2) 1967, Sir Kenneth Clark (1) 1942, Arthur Giardelli (1) 1970, Ivon Hitchens (3) 1957-66, Imogen Holst (3) 1966-70, Augustus John (2) 1960, David Jones (4) 1961-70, and Henry Moore (15) 1942-62.

Some hundred letters, 1929-80 (correspondents N-W), to Ceri and Frances Richards, many of them concerned with their work as artists. The correspondents include John Ormond (11) [?1940s]-1976 (with typescript and autograph drafts and fair copies of poems, and typescript text of a radio broadcast by him, 1954, entitled 'Rest and Unrest: the Art of Ceri Richards'), Victor Pasmore (1) 1969, Peter Pears (8) [1960s-70s], Sir John Rothenstein (2) 1958-68, Roberto Sanesi (12) 1961-76, Stephen Spender (2) 1962, Graham Sutherland (3) [?1941]-56, Vernon Watkins (10) 1960-7 (see note 544, below), with one autograph and one typescript poem.

Some twenty letters and cards, 1928-70, mostly 1928-30, written to each other by Ceri and Frances Richards, including water-colour greetings cards (ff. 14, 20, 34), together with letters from Ceri Richards's parents and uncle, in English and Welsh, congratulating the couple on their marriage in 1929 and on Frances Richards's first pregnancy in 1932.

Some thirty-seven letters, 1939-71, comprising originals, copies and transcripts, from Ceri and Frances Richards to various correspondents, who include Arthur Giardelli (1) [1959], Ivon Hitchens (1) 1942, Edrica and Richard Huws (22) 1939-62, Carl Jung (1) 1960, and Tambimuttu (1) [?1945]. The letters, which are arranged alphabetically by correspondent, relate mainly to the artists' work but contain personal and family news as well. Also included is a draft, 1943, in Frances Richards's hand, of an application by Ceri Richards for a teaching post (ff. 73-6).

Family photographs, [1900s]-[1960s], of Ceri and Frances Richards, including snapshots of Frances Richards as a child (nos 1-2) and as a young woman (nos 9, 13, 15); of Ceri Richards, [late 1920s] (no. 10) and with his elder daughter, Rachel, [c. 1933] (no. 14); and of the Richards family at Buckingham Palace, 1960, on the occasion of Ceri Richards being awarded the CBE (no. 23).
