Arwystli material,

An extensive collection of lecture notes used by Vaughan Owen to teach local history classes organized by the WEA at the High School, Llanidloes, from 1969 to 1978. The classes were known as the 'History of Arwystli'. The lecture notes are divided into bundles: the notes dealing with the early and medieval periods are divided by period e.g. 'Roman', 'Dark Ages', 'Early Medieval', 'Norman'; those dealing with the modern period are divided by topic e.g. 'Parliamentary', 'lead mines', 'banks', 'Non-Conformity', 'education'. A series of twelve pocket notebooks kept by Vaughan Owen, each labelled 'Arwystli note book'. They contain copious notes on all aspects of local history. Also included is a further volume containing a broad index to the notebooks.

Guides to ecclesiastical buildings: general guides,

Guidebooks to churches, cathedrals and abbeys, mainly in Wales. Many are produced by the Ministry of Building and Public Works. Handwritten or typewritten notes by Vaughan Owen are attached to some of the guides. Booklets issued to celebrate the centenary of a number of Montgomeryshire chapels in the 1970s. A large number of guide books to various places and tourist attractions, many of them in London (e.g. the Tower of London, the Houses of Parliament), and many describing other cities (e.g. Coventry, Durham, Edinburgh). Most are endorsed by Vaughan Owen with the date of his visit.

Notes by Vaughan Owen on the history of Llanidloes Parish Church, together with the text and proofs of an article on the subject by him. List of vicars of Llanidloes, 1557-1802. An extensive collection of notes prepared by Vaughan Owen for various lectures and talks to societies. In each case the envelope containing the notes is marked with the date(s) and occasion(s) on which the talk was given and, in some cases, with the subject of the talk. E.g. 'for Newtown Welsh Society, Oct. 28th 1974';. 'The significance of townships, to Powysland, Dec. 1st 1979'. Almost all the talks are to local societies. Most deal with a theme of local historical significance or with Welsh history in general.

Research notes.

Notebooks and envelopes containing Vaughan Owen's research notes. All the material is of historical interest and most of it concerns local history. Some of the notes relate to the Roman period. Each notebook or envelope is marked with the subject of the notes contained therein. Some of the notes clearly form the basis of Vaughan Owen's publications. Also included is a card index of the timber framed houses of Montgomeryshire.
