Anti poll tax campaign

Comprises correspondence, press cuttings, posters and other miscellaneous papers, 1989-1991, relating to the campaign against the community charge. Councillor Ray Davies was imprisoned at Gloucester Gaol for fourteen days during October 1991 because of his refusal to pay the charge. The correspondents include Tony Benn, 1991, and Ron Davies, 1991.

They include election addresses and leaflets, circulars, posters and flyers, and numerous press cuttings, together with a small quantity of correspondence and two photographs. Local campaigns

Comprises mainly press cuttings, 1978-1992, relating primarily to local campaigns in the Caerphilly-Bedwas-Machen locality in which Councillor Ray Davies participated. They include the campaign for bilingual education, industrial pollution, gas safety, and transport problems.

Miscellaneous campaigns

Comprises press cuttings, correspondence and miscellaneous papers, 1993-1999, relating to a large number of political campaigns, mostly in the Caerphilly area, in which Councillor Ray Davies participated. A few of the cuttings relate to Councillor Davies's second marriage and the birth of two sons.

Contains mainly press cuttings, 2000-2001, on an array of minor campaigns in which Councillor Ray Davies participated or supported. They include the campaign to secure a 'Welsh' box on the 2001 Census form, support for hospitals in Palestine, peace campaigns, the campaign to save Caerphilly Miners' Hospital, and opposition to the BNP.

Comprises press cuttings and other papers, 1999-2000, relating to a number of political campaigns. These include the campaign to save Caerphilly hospital, the movement to lend support to Ron Davies MP following the incident on Clapham Common, Councillor Davies's visit to Iraq in 1999, the re-development of Bedwas colliery, and peace campaigns.

Comprises mainly press cuttings, together with a small quantity of printed items and correspondence, 1969-1995, relating to a large number of political campaigns in which Councillor Ray Davies has been involved. These include the campaign for a new Welsh Language Act and for enhanced Welsh medium education, the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa (over which Councillor Davies went on hunger strike in 1991), CND Wales and the Caerwent Peace Camp, the Gulf War, the campaign against corporal punishment in Mid-Glamorgan schools, Ireland, public spending cuts and the withdrawal of the Labour whip from Councillor Davies in 1981-1982 as a result of his protests against the cuts. There are also further papers deriving from more minor political campaigns in the Bedwas-Machen area. The papers, 1960-2003, reflect Councillor Ray Davies's life and the political campaigns and activities in which he was involved. Many are cuttings from local and national newspapers and other printed items. Some of the material reflects his campaigns in various elections, others the movements which he supported and in which he participated. A large number relate to the campaign against the community charge in the 1980s and 1990s. A few stem from his personal and family life.
