Some four hundred and eighty-six letters and postcards, [1950s]-1978, from Edwin John, mainly in Paris, to his daughter Sara John; together with twelve from Sara to Edwin, 1964-1977.
Also included are nine miscellaneous letters to Sara John, 1965-1996, including one from Michael Holroyd; an exchange of letters between Sara John and Brian Sewell, October 2004, concerning Sewell's article on Augustus and Gwen John ('Feminists still haunt Augustus', Evening Standard, 1 October 2004, pp. 38-39); four letters from Edwin to his son Ben John, 1953; two letters from Edwin, 1946, 1973; five John family postcards, 1952-[?1964], from Ben John, Dorelia McNeill and Sara's mother Beatrice Dorothy John; and twelve scraps, postcards and other miscellaneous items, [n.d.].

Some thirty-three letters and postcards, 1928-1975, addressed to Edwin John, mainly from family members.
The correspondents include his father Augustus John, 1932-1946 (ff. 9-11), his aunt Gwen John, 1928-1933 (ff. 15-25), and his step-mother Dorelia McNeill, 1963-1967 (ff. 31-47). Also included are two letters from Edwin to his wife Betty John, [?1933] (ff. 48-51), and two postcards addressed to Gwen John from her father, Edwin William John, 1911 (ff. 13-14).

Seventy-seven letters, 1953-1977, from Mary Taubman (née Edmond), art historian, to Edwin John, discussing Taubman's research into the life and work of Gwen John, including identification of her paintings, publication of her letters, preparations for exhibitions of her work, and the gathering of materials for a proposed biography.
Also included are transcripts, [1967], of letters to Gwen John from Arthur Symonds (f. 79) and Auguste Rodin (f. 80); and a colour copy, [?2005], of a 1955 watercolour painting by Edwin John of Gwen John's garden house at Meudon (f. 170).
