Chess memorabilia

Memorabilia from Chess Olympiads, comprising a black backpack style bag produced for the 1990 Chess Olympiad, Novi Sad, Serbia (then Yugoslavia) which belonged to Welsh chess player Iolo Jones; together with Jones’ photo ID card pass issued to competitors in the 1992 Chess Olympiad in Manila, Philippines.

The group consists of various administrative papers and related documents, 1975-2014, of the Welsh Chess Union and its affiliated clubs in Wales.

The file consists of general correspondence from national and local officers relating to administrative matters such as the W.C.U. constitution, tournaments, club details, costs, and subscriptions; and related papers, 1979-1982.

The file contains mainly Welsh Chess Union year books, 1983-2014; and also contains an International Chess Federation certificate (2001); and some copies/prints ([?2000] x 2014) of photographs taken [c.1927] – [c.1936].

The archive comprises papers relating to the Welsh Chess Union and affiliated regional chess clubs, 1954-2014. The first group (2018 deposit) consists mainly of correspondence, minutes, and administrative records relating to chess in Wales, details of national and international tournaments, tournament participation, and papers relating to other chess associations both in Wales and overseas. The second group (2024 donation) comprises papers and memorabilia relating to the Welsh Chess Union and accumulated by the Welsh chess player Iolo Jones, including copies of the WCU magazine 'Y Ddraig', and reports and memorabilia from international Chess Olympiads.

The collection also originally contained four photographic albums which have been transferred for further conservation.

Y Ddraig magazine

Copies of 'Y Ddraig', the magazine of the Welsh Chess Union, edited by T. Llew Jones until 1976 and first published as 'Cylchgrawn Gwyddbwyll Canolbarth Cymru / Mid-Wales Chess Magazine'. The collection consists of issues 1-3, 6-7, 9-10, and 12-17 (1971-1976), some with notes and corrections by the editor, including issue 2 (1971), which listed all WCU officers; issue 4 (1972), which included results from the Wales/England match in Newport, July 1972, where Wales competed for the first as an independent nation in an international chess tournament; and issue 17 ([1976]), the last to be edited by T. Llew Jones.

Committee correspondence and related papers

The file contains mainly Welsh Chess Union committee correspondence, 1984-1987, relating to organisational matters, meeting agendas, and chess congresses. The file also contains some newspaper cuttings (1984); forms for the 26th Chess Olympiad (1984); and a copy of the FIDE Laws of Chess (1985).
