A small group of documents, 1636-1637, concerning the regulation of the manufacture and sale of copperas (ferrous sulphate), and silver mining in Cardiganshire.
They comprise: (i) a signed warrant of King Charles I to the Attorney General Sir John Bankes, received 17 July 1636, to conclude a contract between the king and English copperas makers to purchase copperas at an improved rate (f. 13); (ii) a petition to the king from Thomas Bushell, the mining entrepreneur, granted at Lindhurst, [Hampshire], 19 August 1637, asking to be granted the right to purchase copperas at a favourable price (f. 14); (iii) a further warrant from the king to Bankes, received 24 October 1637, mainly granting modifications to regulations relating to copperas to give Elizabeth, Dowager Viscountess Savage, a monopoly, but also requiring the removal of the provision for Bushell 'to have Copperis for our Mine in Wales at the former rate' (f. 15). Bushell intended to use copperas in a new process to extract silver from ore, however this process was to prove ineffective (see J. W. Gough, The Superlative Prodigall: A Life of Thomas Bushell (Bristol, 1932), p. 49). Bushell subsequently successfully petitioned the king to establish a branch of the royal mint at Aberystwyth to coin his silver, with himself as warden.

The instructions are addressed to John Egerton, Earl of Bridgewater, who was President of the Council of Wales and the Marches.

Outsize scrap book containing English manuscript and printed poems, letters, ballads, songs, press cuttings, posters and speeches, 1648-1763. As the title suggests, the majority of the material is concerned with royalist themes under the Stuart monarchs, support for the Jacobite cause and anti-Hanoverian propaganda. The earlier works include a copy of a poem by Charles I during his captivity at Carisbrooke Castle, 1648, and items relating to the Commonwealth regime. The later 17th century material concentrates particularly on William III 's foreign wars and his unpopular policies. Individual items of interest include a poem by by Hugh Quellyn praising Sir Robert Owen 's royalist loyalties [pre-1698]; a translation of Merlin 's prophecy; a poster for the [Denbighshire] elections entitled The Protestant Ballad or Advice to Freeholders [c. 1730]; programmes for a puppet show, 1734, and for songs performed at Hardwick, 1763; and well-known accounts of the executions of Lords Kilmarnock and Balmerino, 1746.

Letter, signed by Charles I at Oxford, 11 March 1643, requesting the Commissioners of Array and the Sheriff of Denbighshire to treat with Crown tenants and fee farmers in the county for the payment of four years' rent in advance.

A volume containing some one hundred and sixty-three letters and other papers, 1576-1810, mostly of the Davies family of Llanerch and Gwysaney or of the related families of Mutton, Whitehall and Dod (ff. 1, 3-92, 97 verso-98), together with a few later additions, 1813-[late 19 cent.] (ff. 2, 3a, 11a recto-verso, 18 verso, 40a).
