Robert Vaughan MSS

Three incomplete manuscripts in the autograph of Robert Vaughan, Hengwrt: (a) An alphabetical list of Welsh personal names and place-names, A-C, with some identifications. Opposite the entry 'Asser mab Efrog cadarn brenhin ynys Brydain', Iolo Morganwg has written 'Wonderful ignorance, in Mr Vaughan of Hengwrt' (22 ff., mutilated); (b) A Chronology of British History from Vortigern to Cadwaladr, followed by what Robert Vaughan terms a 'digression' repairing some errors and explaining some obscure points in the same. In it he refers to a copy of Gildas' Epistle De excidio Britanniae seen by his 'cousin Jon. Jones an antiquary of our countrey' with Sir Robert Cotton, kt and bart. There are also references to 'Coch Asaph'. This essay appears to be a draft and there is a break at p. [18], (17 ff., of which the last two are blank; unnumbered except after the break referred to); (c) A chronicle of Welsh history from 972 to 993 (incomplete). This also appears to be a draft (8 ff., of which the last three are blank).

Cydfod yr Ysgrythyrau Sanctaidd

A volume, [early 17 cent.], containing a concordance of the Welsh Bible in the hand of Robert Vaughan of Hengwrt. This manuscript was discovered by the Rev. Evan Evans (Ieuan Brydydd Hir, 1731-1788) at Bala in 1765 (see Gweithiau Ieuan Brydydd Hir, p. 199); he intended to print the manuscript at Carmarthen (ibid, p. 205). As a concordance, it is vastly inferior to that of Abel Morgan which was printed at Philadelphia in 1730, and also to that of Peter Williams, published at Carmarthen in 1773.

British Antiquities Revived

A draft tract entitled 'Proofes drawne from authorities and other reasons why Cadelh prince of Southwales was the eldest sonne of Roderic the greate (kinge of Wales) and that he and his issue after him had a superioritie over the rest of Wales and his two bretheren and the descendantes from them' by, and in the autograph of, Robert Vaughan of Hengwrt. The substance of this tract was subsequently incorporated in Vaughan's British Antiquities Revived (Oxford, 1662).
