This collection contains works in prose and verse by William Rees, D.D. (Gwilym Hiraethog) (1802-1883), Congregational minister, poet and lecturer. They include poetry and draft poetry, draft and original manuscripts of prose works, adjudications, a draft translation of the psalms, lectures, draft correspondence, a draft biography, sermons and drafts of sermons, etc.; also included is the autograph album of Elizabeth Peter, wife of John Peter (Ioan Pedr) (1833-1877).

Guiseppe Mazzini letters to Gwilym Hiraethog

Six letters and fragment of another, 1861-1864, from Guiseppe Mazzini (1805-1872), advocate of Italian unity, to William Rees (Gwilym Hiraethog), one of which is written on a printed circular for subscribers to an association to succeed the Friends of Italy (ff. 1-13). Four of the letters have been published in William Rees (Hiraethog): A Memoir by his son Ebenezer Rees, ed. by H. Elvet Lewis, M.A. (Liverpool, 1915); see also NLW Journal vol. I (1940), p. 149. Also included is a postcard, 1880, from William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898), to Gwilym Hiraethog (f. 14).

An autograph album belonging to Lizzie Rowlands (née Jones), Penrhyndeudraeth, Merioneth, containing entries, 1860-1911, by R. J. Derfel, Thomas E. Ellis, William Rees ('Gwilym Hiraethog'), Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd') and others including a number of prominent Calvinistic Methodist ministers; together with pasted-in photographs of some of the above and family memoranda. The album was originally owned by Lizzie Jones's father Evan Jones, London House, Bala (f. iv) and includes notes taken by him from sermons heard at Calvinistic Methodist Association and other meetings, 1847-1849 (ff. 1-6 verso). Items found loose inside the volume have been filed separately (NLW MS 22010iiE): a letter from Lizzie Rowlands, 1885, and from Thomas Charles Edwards, Bala, 1896, relating to Lizzie Rowlands's association with Mary Jones, Llanfihangel-y-Pennant, and an address by Mrs Rowlands, 1904, containing an account of the walk to Bala to purchase a Bible as recounted by Mary Jones herself.

Cyfrol o bregethau, 1837-1838, yn llaw y Parch. William Rees (Gwilym Hiraethog). = A volume of sermons, 1837-1838, in the hand of the Rev. William Rees (Gwilym Hiraethog).
Mae'r pregethau yn bennaf o'r Testament Newydd, ynghyd ag ambell un o Lyfrau'r Salmau a'r Diarhebion, ac eraill. Perthyn y gyfrol i gyfnod Rees yn weinidog ar eglwys Annibynnol Lôn Swan, Dinbych; rhestrir y pregethau a draddodwyd ganddo, Chwefror 1837-Rhagfyr 1838, ar tt. 188-190 (testun â'i wyneb i waered). = The sermons are taken mainly from the New Testament, along with a few from the Book of Psalms, Book of Proverbs and others. The volume relates to Rees's time as the minister of Swan Lane Independent church, Denbigh; the sermons preached by him, February 1837-December 1838, are listed on pp. 188-190 (inverted text).
