A letter, 1889, to William Ewart Gladstone from the Wadebridge Liberal Association relating to the incident when a loaded cartridge was thrown into his carriage as he was passing through Wadebridge, Cornwall, in June 1889, with copy correspondence between the Association and the chief constable of Cornwall enclosed (ff. 3, 4 recto-verso); together with notes, 1930, by Henry Neville Gladstone relating to the affair, and the actual cartridge thrown.

Six letters and fragment of another, 1861-1864, from Guiseppe Mazzini (1805-1872), advocate of Italian unity, to William Rees (Gwilym Hiraethog), one of which is written on a printed circular for subscribers to an association to succeed the Friends of Italy (ff. 1-13). Four of the letters have been published in William Rees (Hiraethog): A Memoir by his son Ebenezer Rees, ed. by H. Elvet Lewis, M.A. (Liverpool, 1915); see also NLW Journal vol. I (1940), p. 149. Also included is a postcard, 1880, from William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898), to Gwilym Hiraethog (f. 14).

A volume containing some one hundred and two letters and other papers, [1487x1503]-1895, many relating to the Davies, Cooke and Davies-Cooke families of Gwysaney, Owston and Llanerch and relatives such as the Earl of Kingston, with other letters apparently collected as examples of autographs. Also included are items such as engravings, photographs and cuttings relating to some of the correspondents, 1788-1900; some items are accompanied by biographical notes, [19 cent., third ¼].
The papers include the Earl and Countess of Kingston's invitation to Queen Victoria's Coronation, 1838 (ff. 1-2), a sign manual of Henry VII, [1487x1503], thanking John Pillesdon [Puleston] (f. 5), two warrants of Henry VIII, 1538 (ff. 5 verso-6), an acquittance signed by Geo: Asapher: [George Griffith, Bishop of St Asaph], 1664 (f. 24) and two receipts relating to Théodore de Bèze and François Bonivard, 1554, 1575 (f. 53; French). Autograph letter, 24 December 1868, from William Ewart Gladstone, 10 Downing Street, to [Vice-Admiral Lord] C[larence] Paget, [Commander-in-Chief for the Mediterranean Fleet], in which Gladstone discusses the formation of his first government, having become Prime Minister on 3 December.
The letter contains references to Paget's brother-in-law [Arthur Otway, Gladstone's new Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs], and to [Hugh] Childers, [First Lord of the Admiralty]. In a postscript he states 'The Welsh have made a notable demonstration in many of their elections and one which ought to warn the Clergy of what they are about'.
