Arnold Thorpe, [1936x1965], including transcripts by Thorpe of poems, prose and letters by Margiad Evans, scripts of radio broadcasts and extracts of reviews of Margiad Evans's published prose works; correspondence relating to information on Margiad Evans; biographical and related material; Whistler family photographs; notes by W. Literary and personal papers, 1854, [c. 1932]-1960, of the novelist, poet and artist Margiad Evans comprising mainly manuscript and typescript drafts of both published and unpublished works and including a draft of her second novel The Wooden Doctor (Oxford, 1933), also manuscript and typescript drafts in preparation for her first published volume of poetry, Poems from Obscurity (London, 1947), manuscript essays, and typescript radio scripts by or based on Margiad Evans's work; together with journals for 1933-1934 and 1935-1939, which include mainly literary and personal notes; and miscellaneous papers.

Twelve letters, 1954-1956, from the novelist, poet and artist, Peggy Eileen Whistler ('Margiad Evans'), mainly to Alan and Dorothy Hancox, containing personal news and references to her writings (ff. 1-16 verso), together with five letters from her husband, Michael Williams, to the same (ff. 17-26 verso).

Autobiography of Margiad Evans,
A collection of seven holograph chapters by Peggy Eileen Whistler ('Margiad Evans'), written 1941-1942, and published, with a further six chapters, as 'Autobiography' (Oxford: Basil Blackwell, 1943). One chapter, 'Before the Snow' is dated 'March 1942' and described as an 'original first draft' (f. 93). The chapters are accompanied by two letters, September 1956, from Whistler to Alan and Dorothy Hancox.
The chapters include Winter Journal (ff. 6-55), Before the Snow (ff. 56-93), The Field (ff. 94-101), Looking at a Star (ff. 102-107), The Autobiography of an Afternoon (ff. 108-131), Morning (ff. 132-140), and Conclusion, Under the Oak Tree (ff. 141-160).

A collection of holograph poems, 1953-1956, by Peggy Eileen Whistler ('Margiad Evans'), including 'The Country Churchyard' (1955) (f. 3), 'God's Love' (1953) (f. 4), 'Autumn' ([1956]) (f. 5), 'Bather' ([1953]) (f. 7), 'The Old Name' ([1953]) (f. 8), and 'Cherry Orchard in Bloom' (f. 9).
Other fragments, also in Whistler's hand, include a page of an original play 'Dear Desdemona' (f. 10) [cf. NLW MS 23373E & NLW, Margiad Evans MS 29], and an excerpt from the second part of her unfinished 'Widower's Tale' (ff. 11-14).

Twelve letters and one Christmas card, 1938-1943, from the author and illustrator Peggy Eileen Whistler ('Margiad Evans'), to the donor's father, Thomas Kennedy Butcher (ff. 2-23), together with one letter to Mr Butcher from Arnold Thorpe, 1964 (f. 33).
Also included are photographs of Margiad Evans, 1938-1940 (ff. 25-32), a photocopy of her inscription in Mr Butcher's copy of her novel, The Wooden Doctor (1933) (f. 24), and a typescript copy of her radio script 'December Day', broadcast on 31 December 1956 (ff. 34-50) (see also NLW MS 23373E).

A group of correspondence including letters from Margiad Evans (Peggy Eileen Whistler) to her sister Nancy [Nightingale]; a notebook containing a revised manuscript draft of the second (concluding) part of Margiad Evans's unpublished autobiographical essay 'The Immortal Hospital or Some Recollections of Our Childhood' (folios numbered 46-83; see also NLW MS 23369C and NLW, Margiad Evans Papers, September 1982 Donation 22-23); a script ‘December day’ broadcast by the BBC in 1954; and a guest book for Springherne, near Ross on Wye, 1937-9, run by the Whistler sisters with writings by Nancy Nightingale who wrote under the name Sian Evans.

Poems and Sketch for Promenade,
Two holograph poems and an autobiographical sketch by Peggy Eileen Whistler ('Margiad Evans'), 1952, written for a special issue of Promenade: the weekly review for Cheltenham (no. 3, 26 July 1952). The poems are 'Epitaph' (f. 3) and 'The Shiny Crown' (f. 4). Also included is a printed copy of Promenade (ff. 5-14), including the sketch (ff. 12 verso, 13), 'Epitaph' (f. 14) and 'The Shiny Crown' (f. 14 verso).
