Morganiae archaiographia

A transcript, with additions, by Sir Edward Walker, herald and secretary at war, of 'Morganiae Archaiographia' or 'A Booke of the Antiquityes of Glamorganshire ... 1578' by Rice Merrick (Rhys Amheurug) of Cottrell, St. Nicholas, Glamorgan. The work was privately printed by Sir Thomas Phillipps, Middle Hill, in 1825, and reproduced, with notes by James Andrew Corbett, in 1887. The transcriber's additions, completed on 3 April 1675, consist largely of 'A Briefe History of the Originall Descent of ye most Noble Famly of ye Grandvilles, or de Grana Villa, vulgarly called Grenviles, or Greenfeilds, descended from ye Dukes of Normandy, faithfully collected out of seuerall ancient writings in the Tower, & elsewhere. Anno D'ni. 1639', illustrated with one hundred and one coats-of-arms painted in colour.

Walker, Edward, Sir, 1612-1677

Rice Merrick's 'Glamorgan Antiquities',

A transcript by John Montgomery Traherne of Rice Merrick's manuscript (published in 1825 and again in 1887) usually known as 'A Book of Glamorganshire Antiquities by Rice Merrick Esq. 1578'. The transcript is preceded by the following note: 'The following extracts illustrating the History of Glamorganshire were made from a MS. in the possession of Canon Williams Wilkins Esq. of Pwllpant transcribed in 1702 by E. Lhuyd at the Ashmole Museum Oxford from a MS. bearing date 1657. This MS. appears to be extracted from of [sic] a folio MS. in the Library of Queens Coll. Oxford entitled A Book of Glamorganshire Antiquities ... The Provost and Fellows kindly permitted me to peruse this vol. a duplicate copy of which was burnt at Havod [Cardiganshire]'. There are also numerous additions, including lists of knights of the shire and sheriffs, pedigrees, copies of deeds and other charters, notes on the manor of Llanbleddian, etc.
