A volume containing two collections of transcripts of poetry, with copious annotations, in the hand of Owen Williams ('Owain Gwyrfai'), Waunfawr. The first collection, entitled 'Llwyn y Gell', includes 'cywyddau', etc. by Gruff. The sources used by the scribe for his transcripts of poems include 'L[l]yfr ysgrif Eiddo Mr. Owen Roberts gynt o Bentraeth Mon', 'L[l]yfrau Owen Gruffydd Llanystumdwy', and '[L]lyfrau M.S. pwdredig eiddo Mr. Jonathan Jones, Colector of Carnarfon 1855'. At the beginning is a list of poets whose titles were taken from Y Greal and a list of titles of poems transcribed in full. The collection was compiled during the period 1855-9, although the fly-leaf bears the scribe's name dated 1863. The second collection, beginning at the end, is entitled 'Y Gell Gynen, ('herwydd canau cynen sydd ynddo') and contains fliting poems ('ymrysongerddi') between Edmwnt Prys and William Cynwal and Sion Philip and Edmunt Prys, together with additional 'cywyddau' by Edmunt Prys. This section of the manuscript was compiled between 1844 and 1846, but there are some additions of the period 1859-61. Recorded on the upper end paper are timber purchase accounts of Owen Williams, 1844-5. The manuscript is lettered on the spine 'Owain Gwyrfai MS'.

At the beginning of this section is a progressive list of poems ('Cynnwysiad o'r Cywyddau ...'), an alphabetical index ('Cynnwysiad Llyth'rennol') of first lines, and an index of poets ('Enwau'r Beirdd'), all in the hand of David Ellis, and an incomplete list of poets in the hand of Owen Williams, Waunfawr. The second part of the manuscript contains 'Cywyddau' and a few 'awdlau' by Mathew Bromffild, Tudur Aled, Sion Brwynog, Lewis Mon, Sion Tudur, Rhys Goch Glyn Dyfrdwy, Morys Dwyfech otherwise Morys ab Ifan ab Einion, Gwilym ap Sefnyn, Gutto'r Glynn, Howel ap Reinallt, William Llyn, Lewis Daron, Gwilym ap Ifan Hen, Guttun Owain, Cynwrig ap Dafydd Goch, Owain ap Llywelyn Moel, Rhys Goch o'r Yri, Rhys Goch ap Ddafydd, Robin Ddu Fardd, Tudur Penllyn, Rhys Pennarth, Lewis ap Edward, Dafydd Pennant, Roger Cyffin ('Efe a fu'n Berson yn Llanberis'), Owain ap Llywelyn ap y Moel, Leweis Menai, Robert Ifans, Lewis Morganwg Bencerdd, Owain Waed Da, Griffudd Grug, Hugh Pennant, Morys Berwyn, and Watkin Clywedog. According to a note at the end by David Ellis, 7 June 1777, the greater part of this section was transcribed from a manuscript believed to be in the hand of Siôn Brwynog [Cwrtmawr MS 312]. The third part of the manuscript contains a transcript of the text of 'Y Gododdin' ('Y Gwawdodyn') in old and modern orthography; an 'awdl' in English ('O michti Ladi, our leding...') by Ieuan ap Rhydderch ap Ieuan Llwyd ('o Ogerddan') or Ieuan ap Hywel Swrdwal, transcribed in 1785 from a manuscript of John Jones (Sion ap Wiliam Sion), Gell[i] Lyfrdy [sic]; and 'cywyddau' and an 'awdl' by Sion Phylip, Huw Arwystl, Sion Keri, Sion Tudur, Ieuan Tew Ieuaf, Sion Tudur ('o Wicwar'), Iorwerth Fynglwyd, Sion Mowddwy, Lewis Glyn Cothi, Sion Dafydd Siancyn, Risart Phylip, and Huw Llwyd Cynfel. At the end of the manuscript is a progressive list of poems ('Cynnwysiad') contained in the second section, an alphabetical index ('Cynnwysiad llyth'rennol') of first lines, an index of poets ('Enwau'r Beirdd') and a progressive list of poems ('Cynnwysiad') contained in the third section, all in the hand of David Ellis, together with an incomplete list of poets contained in the second section in the hand of Owen Williams, Waunfawr ('Owain Gwyrfai'). There are numerous additions, variants, and annotations in the hands of Owen Williams, P[eter Bailey] W[illiams], [Griffith Williams] ('Gutyn Peris'), and [Professor Thomas Gwynn Jones]. The manuscript is bound uniformly with Cwrtmawr MS 10 and 12 and the spine is lettered 'Dafydd Ellis MS'.

Written on the inside lower cover is a long note by O[wen] Williams, Fronheulog, Waunfawr, 1857, of which the following is an extract, - 'Myfi a gesglais gynhwysedd y llyfr hwn o'r hen ysgrifiau a ddaeth i'm dwylaw oeddynt eiddo Dafydd Ddu Eryri ac a delais am eu rhwymo yn nghyd megys y gwelir yma er's llawer o flynyddoedd yn ol ...'.

Part I is based on 'Llyfr Brith Corsygedol' (Peniarth MS 198) and Part II on a manuscript probably in the hand of John Jones, Gellilyfdy. There are imperfect lists of contents at the beginning of each part. Bound in at the end of the volume, also in the hand of Owen Williams, are 'englynion' ('I'r Iesu', etc.) transcribed in 1853 from a manuscript (1655) of William Salesbury of Bachymbyd; two versions of an address on 'Helynt y Cymry, eu hiaith a'u defodau, etc.' delivered at Eisteddfod Tywyn, Tre Fadog, and prepared for publication in the Carnarvon Herald; and a biography of Richard Jones ('Gwyndaf Eryri'; 1785-1848). The volume is lettered on the spine in gold: 'Owain Gwyrfai MS'.
