A note about the commissioning of the piece included in the series explains that the work was commissioned by the Royal National Eisteddfod of Wales, Caernarfon 1979, in association with the Welsh Arts Council, and first performed in Caernarfon in August 1979 by the BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra conducted by David Lloyd Jones. The piece consists of four movements based on impressions of the medieval Welsh princes Maelgwn Gwynedd, Cadwaladr Fendigaid, Owain Gwynedd, and Llewelyn ap Gruffudd.
