David Davies: General Correspondence,

General correspondence, 1901-29, to David Davies, together with copies of his replies in some cases. They cover a wide range of subjects and issues, mostly political. The important letters penned by prominent politicians and public figures have been noted at file level. Many of the letters from the period 1901-05 were written by David Davies to his relatives and associates while he travelled extensively abroad. Some of the letters from 1917-18 discuss demobilisation or reconstruction in the wake of the First World War.

Some of the letters relate to the activities and running of the League of Nations Union set up in 1918, others concern the publication and running of the Welsh Outlook periodical. Political and Montgomeryshire Constituency Papers,

Files A13/1-A13/5 and A13/11-A13/16 comprise correspondence and papers, 1916-43, relating mainly to the affairs of the Montgomeryshire Liberal Association, interspersed with material concerning national political life, mainly the Liberal Party. Files A13/6-A13/10 consist of correspondence and printed material, 1920-25, relating to the work of the Temperance League and similar organisations; correspondence, 1939-43, concerning the Inter Parliamentary Union; various political memoranda, 1918-44, mainly relating to the Liberal Party; correspondence and papers, 1917-27, concerning David Davies's local work as the constituency MP for Montgomeryshire; and a notebook, 1930s, containing drafts of speeches and letters prepared by one of Lord Davies's secretaries. Files A13/16-19 related to the Liberal Party more widely, including the North Wales Liberal Federation and the merger with the South Wales Liberal Federation.

E. H. Garner Evans,

Contains correspondence and papers, 1934-50, relating mainly to the political career of E. H. Garner-Evans MP, the formation of an electoral pact between the National Liberals and the Conservatives in the Denbigh division in 1948-49, and the ensuing general election there in February 1950. Some of the letters discuss political issues of national importance. Garner-Evans represented the Denbighshire constituency as a National Liberal and Conservative MP from 1950 until 1959.

David Davies/Lord Davies: General Correspondence,

Letters to David Davies, 1932, on a wide range of subjects, mainly political, interspersed with copies of some of his replies. Individual correspondents are noted at file level. Several of the letters congratulate David Davies on his elevation to the peerage at the beginning of the year. File A3/5 comprises correspondence 1930-33, to, from and about J. Vyrnwy Lewis of Caradog Road, Aberystwyth, whom David Davies employed as a research assistant and aide.

General letters, 1933-34, to Lord Davies, interspersed with copies of some of his replies. Many of the letters relate to political themes and international affairs. Some concern the New Commonwealth Society, mainly its British Section, and Lord Davies's many publications in the form of volumes and articles. Some of the correspondents sympathise with Lord Davies on his successive bouts of illness during this period. Files A4/9-A4/10 consist of correspondence, 1933-35, between Lord Davies and Rear Admiral Gordon Campbell.

Many of the letters relate to the running of the Gregynog estate. Some letters discuss the internal affairs of the Montgomeryshire Liberal Association.

Correspondence and papers, 1920-34, relating to the establishment of the League of Nations Union (Wales) and its development up to 1934. Includes various memoranda and policy documents, minutes of various committees and sub-committees, papers concerning the organisation of conferences and meetings, monthly reports, and lists of local branches, their officials and their activities. There is also a small number of relevant press cuttings.
