Art-related papers accumulated by H. Clarence Whaite

The series consists of art-related material of interest to H. Clarence Whaite, 1845-1911. The items include papers relating to art publications, 1877-1911, papers relating to artists' materials, 1863-1911, papers relating to funds and memorials etc., 1872-1911, and papers relating to art schools, art lectures, etc., 1866-1911. Also included are various art magazines and journals, 1869-1907, printed books and booklets relating to art, 1845-1903, and press cuttings relating to art topics, 1866-1911.

Catalogues

The series comprises catalogues, 1863-1912, of the exhibitions held at various galleries throughout Britain, together with a small number of catalogues of exhibitions held abroad.

Diaries, notebooks and almanacks

The series comprises three diaries 1874, 1877 and 1890, six artists' almanacks, 1896, 1901-1902, 1905-1907, and three notebooks, 1874, [?1905]-[?1912], in the hand of H. Clarence Whaite. The contents in the main refer to exhibition dates and details of pictures sent to exhibitions, private viewing dates, and dates of meetings, but there are some references to letters received from various correspondents, and details of a personal nature.

Exhibition papers

The series comprises mainly exhibition circulars, 1882-1908, together with notices of exhibitions and a list of prices of pictures, with invitation cards to various exhibitions, 1883-1912. The file also contains details of art classes held at the Royal Cambrian Academy, 1889-1907.

Greetings cards

The series comprises a variety of cards, some hand made, sent to H. Clarence Whaite and his family, 1855-1912, on birthdays and Christmas, and also includes in memoriam cards, calling cards and invitations to various social functions.

Letter books

The series comprises Whaite's letter books, 1886-1912, containing copies of letters to various correspondents, including prominent artists of the period, and influential people in the art world, together with letters to art societies and galleries. The contents relate, in the main, to his professional business as an artist and president of both the Manchester Academy of Fine Art and the Royal Cambrian Academy, but also to some matters of a personal nature.

Letters from the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts

The file comprises mainly routine letters to H. Clarence Whaite, 1871-1912, from officers and members of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts (MAFA), including letters relating to subscriptions due; notification of exhibitions to be held; lists of members eligible for nomination to offices; and letters relating to council meetings.

Letters from the Royal Cambrian Academy

The series consists of letters to H. Clarence Whaite, 1883-1912, as president of the Royal Cambrian Academy (RCA), and reflect the day to day running of the academy, including letters relating to the organising of exhibitions, election of members, building matters, the formation of the Academy's Art Union lottery for pictures, etc.

Letters to and from H. Clarence Whaite's parents

The series comprises correspondence, 1825-1869, between Henry Whaite and Sarah Slater, H. Clarence Whaite's parents, before and after they were married, together with letters from their sons to their parents and to each other, and from other family members to Henry and Sarah Whaite. Also included are nine letters to Henry Whaite from ?John Stones, Dublin, 1825-1826, and one from W. Nowlin, Douglas, 1827.
