A letter-book, 1560-1, kept by Thomas Bentham (1513-1579) who became bishop of Lichfield and Coventry in 1569. It contains copies of letters, abstracts of letters, copies of various interrogatories and memoranda, etc. Among the persons to whom letters are addressed are the following: Edmund Grindal, bishop of London; Sir Francis Knollys, vice-chamberlain of the royal household; Sir Nicholas Bacon; the Dean and Chapter of Lichfield; William Paulet, first marquess of Winchester, lord treasurer of England; Queen Elizabeth; William Cecil, first baron Burghley; Walter Haddon, master of requests; Alexander Nowell, dean of St. Paul's; Sir Henry Sidney, lord president of Wales; Matthew Parker, archbishop of Canterbury; and Thomas Yale, 'Chauncelor to my lord of Canterberyes grace', aft. chancellor of the diocese of Bangor, etc. (D.N.B. lxiii, 283).
