Welsh Affairs

Series contains papers related to Welsh affairs, including devolution of the legal system, campaigns for devolution, higher and further education and parliamentary work on Welsh issues.

Constituency

The sub-fonds contains files related to issues in the Meirionydd Nant Conwy and Dwyfor Meirionydd constituencies including nuclear power, railway services, Blaenau Ffestiniog hospital and local businesses.

Defence

The sub-fonds comprises files related to Elfyn Llwyd's interest in defence matters, with the exception of material related to the Iraq War (2003-2011) which is located in Series I.

Other files

Miscellaneous files including correspondence, papers relating to elections and policies.

2015 donation

Archives of Shelter Cymru ca. 1986-2015 reflecting the work of the organisation in campaigning, researching and advocacy around issues related to homelessness and housing. The archive contains a number of publications as well as item such as banners, t-shirts and badges.

Newfoundland

Files relating to Gordon MacDonald's tenure as Governor or Newfoundland; primarily dealing with the administration of the dominion, official engagements and the arrangements for deciding its future which resulted in Confederation with Canada in 1949. The Sub-fond includes correspondence, drafts for speeches and radio broadcasts, employment, relations with the Newfoundland Commission of Government, groups campaigning for and against confederation and negotiations with the Canadian Government.

RSPB papers

Original file of general RSPB kite correspondence (orig. file ref. 1003). The original file cover (discarded) was entitled "RSPB Kite Correspondence, 1958-66. 'Dead' file per Andy Jones" and endorsed "RSPB 'dead' file, 'rescued' from recycling". The file mainly comprises letters addressed to Mr Brown, secretary of the RSPB, and P. J. Conder, assistant secretary, and copy replies, 1958-1968, many from Captain H. R. H. Vaughan, including relating to the kite reward scheme; "you will be interested to hear that I have unearthed, pretty nearly literally, Kite correspondence dated way back to 1900 and something", 9 Sept. 1959; the transfer of RSPB's early kite papers to Morrey Salmon, Jan. 1960; the RSPB's purchase of part of the Cawdor estate at Ystrad-ffin, co. Carm., 1963-1967; the switch by farmers from arsenical sheep-dips to dips containing dieldrin, including a recommendation to read Rachel Carson, 'Silent spring', 1963-1964; the proposed Llyn Brianne reservoir, 1965; the RSPB's purchase of Mrs Mappin's Ynys-hir estate, co. Card., 1966-1967; a proposed extension of the Pendine Proof & Experimental Establishment danger area, 1967; the lack of Welsh representation on the "Countryside in 1970" conference, 1968; and a newspaper cutting reporting the award of the RSPB gold medal to Captain and Mrs Vaughan, 1968.

Sub fond contains material related to Baroness Randerson's work as Assembly Member for Cardiff Central.

Subject files

Series contains files related to specific topics which do not fit within the other series, including; the European Union, public services, health care, veterinary medicines, planning, childcare, healthcare, the Guardian Act of Settlement, railways, trade unions, Foot and Mouth Disease, the NSPCC, local elections, honours, common land, the Leveson Inquiry, Alex Salmond, railway privatisation, leasehold reform, Northern Ireland, the dairy industry and University Challenge.

Fform Iaith Genedlaethol

Sub fonds contain papers related to the work of Fforwm Iaith Genedlaethol (National Language Forum), an umbrella group of 26 organisations which was formed to campaign for a Welsh Language Act and which developed Strategaeth Iaith 1991-2001, a strategy to secure a safe and prosperous future for the Welsh language.
Member organisations of Fforwm Iaith Genedlaethol includes; Adfer, Canolfan Iaith Clwyd, Canolfan Iaith Genedalethol Nant Gwrtheyrn, Cefn, Cyd, Cymdeithas y Cyfamodwyr, Cymdeithas Tau Gwledig Cymru, Cymdeithas yr Iaith, Cyngor Llyfrau Cymraeg, Merched y Wawr, Mudiad Ysgol Meithryn, Pont, Pwyllgor Gyd-enwadol yr Iaith Gymraeg Arfon, Rhieni dros Addysg Gymraeg, Undeb Cenedlaethol Athrawon Cymru, Undeb Cenedlaethol Myfyrwyr Cymru, Undeb Myfyrwyr Cymraeg Aberystwyth, Undeb Myfyrwyr Cymraeg Bangor, Urdd Gobaith Cymru, Y Colegiwm Cymraeg, Y Gymdeithas Feddygol, and Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru.

Fforwm Iaith Genedlaethol

The Labour Party

Comprises files related to campaigning work undertaken by Gordon MacDonald for the Labour party for the 1950 and 1951 General Elections and including arrangements for public meetings and meetings of Labour party members.

Welsh Kite Trust papers

"Three years ago the Countryside Council for Wales decided it could no longer afford to contribute towards the cost of annual monitoring of the Welsh kite population, and in 1995 the RSPB followed suit ... So we set up the WKT in an attempt to replace the funding which was no longer available from CCW and RSPB, for monitoring, protection, research, and public education about kites in Wales" (Peter Davis letter to R. S. Thomas, Jan. 1997). Peter Davis was a trustee of the Welsh Kite Trust, 1996-2012.

Elections and campaign material

Sub fond contains election campaign material produced by the S. D. P./Liberal Alliance and Welsh Liberal Democrats for elections to South Glamorgan County Council, Cardiff City Council, Cardiff County Council, UK General Elections, by-elections, elections to the National Assembly for Wales and the European Parliament as well as Focus local community newsletters distributed in the Cardiff area.
