Correspondence,

Arranged chronologically, 1886-1931 (1-5207), with a few additional letters, 1911-1921, at the end of the group (5208-5214). The paper copy of the schedule includes an index to the correspondents. Nine persons have more than fifty letters each to their name, as either writer or recipient): Beriah Evans (361 letters), D. Rhys Phillips (304), D. Arthen Evans (224), Hubert Alexander (215), Agnes O'Farrelly (162), Lachlan Macbean (71), William Bayley (62), Gordon Lang (60) and Herbert Dunnico (58). The descriptions of these nine people's letters include a code giving the reference of the previous and the next item in E. T. John's correspondence with that person. For example, the description of no. 3992 (from D. Arthen Evans, 26 Sept. 1923) includes the code (3986:4009). The symbol / instead of a number indicates that there is no earlier or later item, as appropriate.
