Stuart, Lord Rendel (1834-1913),

Arranged into material in the original deposit, 1853-1905 (D 1-72), in the April 1898 deposit, 1888-1891 (D 73-77), and in the Aug. 1989 deposit, 1852-1912 (D 78-92). D 86-92 are photocopies of original correspondence in the Armstrong archive at Bamburgh.

India official correspondence,

Letter books and bundles of loose letters containing official and some private correspondence mainly from, but also, to Clive, relating to his life in India and England, 1752-1759,1765-1774. For the most part there is no clear division between either the public and private or the Indian and European aspects of the correspondence. Owing to the predominance of the public correspondence, it is Clive's service in the East India Company and, in the wider context, the history of British rule in India, rather than his domestic and private concerns, that provide the main subject matter. The group also contains indexes and registers of corespondence, and letters written in Persian, 1752-1773, almost all addressed to Clive, relating mainly to military and financial affairs in India and to relationship with and between native Indian rulers.

Drafts,

The Roberts & Evans archive included an incomplete annual series of bundles of drafts, sometimes further arranged into draft conveyances, leases, mortgages and reconveyances, abstracts of title, wills, and miscellaneous draft papers. Of these, the draft wills have been retained (SD 1), as well as draft deeds relating to public undertakings (SD 2), and a small sample of miscellaneous draft papers (SD 3). The rest were returned to the depositor, the successor in business to Roberts & Evans. A list is available in hard copy at the reader’s desk containing a lightly edited version of an uncompleted preliminary list of the drafts in Roberts & Evans boxes 64-76 before they were weeded; this is the only record of the drafts in those boxes that were returned to the depositor. Further drafts and executed final versions of some of these deeds may well be among the clients’ papers (C).
