A copy of Charles Ashton: Gweithiau Iolo Goch gyda nodiadau hanesyddol a beirniadol (Croesoswallt, 1896), with annotations, some if not all by J. H. Davies. Inside the volume is a notebook probably in the autograph of Charles Ashton containing a list of the poems of Iolo Goch, with particulars of sources, etc., a shorter list in the autograph of D. Silvan Evans with a reference to a manuscript (then at Llanwrin, now Cwrtmawr MS 325) in the autograph of Wiliam Henri [sic] Mounsey, 1859, and a letter, [19]22, from Henry Lewis, Swansea to Principal [J. H.] Davies.

Llawysgrif D. Silvan Evans,

A volume in the hand of Daniel Silvan Evans containing a list of 'Words occurring in the Welsh Bible which are not, and cannot become part of the language', and observations on words and expressions used in the Welsh Bible and in the Revised Version of the New Testament (1881).

Gwaith William Llŷn,

A volume in the hand of D. Silvan Evans containing 'awdlau' and 'cywyddau' by Wiliam Lleyn. The transcripts were made c. 1869 and appear to be taken from more than one source, e.g. a manuscript of Paul Panton, 1779, and a manuscript of W. H. Mounsey based on a manuscript in the hand of [Owen Jones] 'Owen Myfyr'. At the end are 'Tri o'r Chwe Englyn a ddywedir i Ddafydd ab Gwilym wneuthur ar ei Glaf-wely' transcribed by D. Silvan Evans from a manuscript in the hand of ?D[avid] Ellis [Cricieth]. Beginning at the end are three pages of notes on 'Matter'.

Barddoniaeth,

A volume of 'cywyddau', etc. transcribed by W[illiam] H[enry] Mounsey in 1859 from manuscripts in the British Museum ('Barddoniaeth sef Casgliad O Waith Beirdd Cymru. Tynwyd allan y Casgiad hwn O Ysgriflyfrau yn yr Amgueddfa Brydeinig Genyf fi, Wiliam Henri Mounsey O Gaerliwelyd [sic] yn Sir Cwmberland. 1859'), together with annotations by D. Silvan Evans. The poets represented are Iolo Goch, Llywelyn Moel y Pantri, Gruffydd Gryg, Iorwerth Cyriog, Gutto'r Glyn, Iorwerth Vynglwyd, Lewis Morganwg, Sefnyn, Sippyn Cyfeiliog, Syr D[afydd] Trefor, Robin Ddu ('hynaf, o Fôn'), Rhys Goch Eryri, Doctor Sion Cent, Rhys Brydydd, Llawdden, Dafydd Nanmor, Dafydd ap Edmwnt, Guttyn Owain, Deio ap Ieuan Du, Llewelyn ap Guttyn, Gruffydd Hiraethog, William Cynwal, Sion Tudur, William Lleyn, Morus Kyffin, Mredydd ap Rhys, Robert Dai Llwyd and Sion Gruffudd ('o Llanddyfnan'). There is a list of contents ('Cynnwysiad') at the beginning of the volume. Among the illustrations and cut-outs mounted on the fly-leaves and in blank spaces in the manuscript are engravings of Montgomery Castle, the Fall of the Ogwen, Conway Tubular Bridge and Castle, Llyn Idwall, Rhaiadr Du near Tan y Bwlch, Moel y Gest, Denbigh, Snowden [sic] and Llanberis Lake, Valle Cruces Abbey and Pont Aberglaslyn. The spine is lettered 'Casgliad o Waith Beirdd Cymru. W. H. Mounsey. 1859'.

Telyn y Cyssegr,

A volume entitled 'Telyn y Cyssegr. 1851', being a collection of hymns and religious poems, including translations, by D. Silvan Evans. Many of the compositions were published in D. Silvan Evans: Telyn Dyfi (Aberystwyth, 1898).

A volume containing pedigrees transcribed by J. H. Davies mainly from the Golden Grove Book of Pedigrees, L1659-L1675, followed by a number of holograph letters, etc., the details of which are as follows: Samuel Roberts ['S. Silvan Evans, 1882 (1) (an appeal - some friends are moving to reward the writer for his pioneer efforts to obtain Postal Reforms), J[oseph] Harris ['Gomer'], editor, Swansea to the Reverend Walter Davies, rector of Manavon, 1819 (1) (requesting a few communications for Seren Gomer), lines of verse in the autograph of John Ceiriog Hughes beginning 'Roedd Prydydd yn eistedd ei [sic] wrth ochor y tan ...', a (?) J. Johnes, Garthmyl, Welshpool to the Reverend R. Richards, Caerwys, 1836 (1) (the writer has recently been attacked for inaccuracy by the Dean of St Asaph - a request for information), H. Jones, Dinas and Pen rhiw'r kiln [i.e. Hugh Jones, Maesglasau] to the Reverend Mr Richards, Darowen, 1816-17 (2) (the writer's unhappy state and condition), W[illia]m Owen Pughe, London to Mr Ed. Jones, Minffordd Cottage, Tal y Llyn, 1812 (1) (is glad to hear the addressee has succeeded in procuring a boat for Llyn Cau) and to the Reverend Mr Richards, Llannevydd, 1819 (1) (arrangements for the Eisteddfod at Denbigh on October 6), and writing from Segrwyd, Denbigh to Miss [?A. Lloyd (erased)], 1827 (1) (replying to the addressee's letter), David Thomas ['Dafydd Ddu Eryri'] D..., date wanting, to the Reverend John Jones, Rectory, Llanllyfni (damaged) (requesting the immediate return of John Owen of Ceidio's elegy composed and written by Goronwy Owen which the addressee has lent to Mr Richards of Llansilin, with a note from John Jones to the Reverend D. Heber, place and year not given, to her Aunt Cotton (a farewell message on quitting England), and 'The Peteggree of Cernioge' in the autograph of David Jones, Trefriw, written on the back of a broadside (Trefriw, Argraphwyd gan Dafydd Jones) relating to stray sheep and beginning 'Mae Mr Lloyd o Hafodunos ...'.

Barddoniaeth D. Silvan Evans,

An incomplete copy in the author's hand of some of the items of verse contained in D. Silvan Evans, Telyn Dyvi (Aberystwyth, 1898). There are some minor differences between this and the printed copy.

Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry,

Extensive material relating to Welsh bibliography accumulated by, and mainly in the hand of, D. Silvan Evans. It includes a volume entitled 'Bibliotheca Cambrensis. Llyfrofyddiaeth Cymru' ('A[u]ctore Dan. Silvano Evans, Cereticense') (pasted on to the inside lower cover is a holograph letter from the Reverend David Williams, Llanedy Rectory, 1868, giving the entry of baptism of John, son of John Walter, cleric and lexicographer, on 22 August 1721); a home-made notebook entitled 'Llyvryddiaeth Gymreig' (pasted on to the inside lower cover is a note in the hand of Benjamin Williams, ('Gwynionydd')); another home-made notebook entitled 'Emynau detholedig at Wasanaeth yr Eglwys. Rhag. 29, 1862', being a bibliography of Welsh hymnals and relevant source material; copious unbound leaves containing book titles (one of the titles is written on the dorse of a letter from M. A. Lewis, Tredegar Post Office, 1868, requesting the return of the writer's copy of 'Dr. J. D. Rees's Old Grammar'); and letters from John Peter ('Ioan Pedr'), Bala to [Henri] Gaidoz, 1870 (publications not contained in Rowland's work [Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry]), to D. Silvan Evans from W[illia]m Price, Llanffwyst, Abergavenny, 1869 (an addition to Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry), [Robert John Pryse] 'Gweirydd ap Rhys', Bangor, [18]78 (the title of Llyfer Plygain, 1618, transcribed by the writer from a volume examined at the Pengwern [Mostyn] sale in 1874), W[illiam] Rowlands ('Gwilym Lleyn'), Machynlleth, 1862-4 (4) (additions and corrections to [Llyfryddiaeth y Cymru], with references to Evan Evans ('Ieuan Brydydd Hir'), to [Jane] Davies, Penmaen, to W. F. Skene, etc., a request by a local printer to be allowed to print the recipient's edition of the works of [Walter Davies] Gwallter Mechain', the writer's removal from the manse to another house in Machynlleth and subsequently to Oswestry, the reported cataloguing of 'Llyfrfa Coleg Dewi' [the library of St. David's College, Lampeter], the illness and voyage to Australia of the writer's son), and from W[illiam] Spurrell, Carmarthen to [William] Rowlands ('Gwilym Lleyn') at Brynmawr, 1851-2 (2) (the writer's copy of Sion Dafydd Rhys's Welsh Grammar, biography of John Daniel, printer of Carmarthen). Some of the unbound titles are in the hand of Richard Williams (1835-1906), Celynog, Newtown and there is some later and additional material in the hand of J. H. Davies.

An imperfect interleaved copy of W. Owen Pughe, Geiriadur Cenhedlaethol Cymraeg a Saesneg. A National Dictionary of the Welsh Language [3rd ed., by Robert John Pryse, Denbigh, 1866], with copious annotations and additions, mainly in the hand of Robert Roberts ('Y Sgolor Mawr') and occasionally in the hand of D. Silvan Evans.

Rhestr o lyfrau, etc. gan D. Silvan Evans,

A notebook in the hand of D. Silvan Evans containing a list of eighteenth century Welsh printed books 'Had from Myrddin Fardd, July 1, 1881'; a few glossary words; and brief notes on some Carmarthenshie and Cardiganshire river names. There are also some Latin exercises (Nos. [33]-40), presumably in the hand of the original owner of the volume.

List of books,

Lists of books with prices, offered by D. Williams, London to the Reverend Robert Williams, Llangernyw and Conway. Most of the books are in Welsh or relate to Wales. There are notes, dated 1831-4, appended to three of the lists, relating to books available and books for which the addressee had enquired. A list of 212 Welsh books, published between 1802 and 1890, sent by [Charles Ashton] to [Daniel Silvan Evans], with a note appended (the above list contained all the books not purely theological out of about 600 books which the writer had recorded, he would like to see a copy of the 'Bardd Cwsg' edited by the addressee and also his note in Revue Celtique on Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry.).

Thirty nine letters, 1873-81, from Edward Breese, Morva Lodge, Portmadoc to D. Silvan Evans, largely concerning books and manuscripts. Reference to what the Council calls the 'revolt' of the staff at Aberystwith [sic], 1879.

Seventeen letters, 1888-93, to D. Silvan Evans from [the Reverend] T[homas] Briscoe, Holyhead mainly concerning points of translation (Biblical, the Apostles' Creed, etc.), with references also to the non-resident canonry offered to the addressee.

Silvan Evans are transcripts of four letters, 1846-9, from the Reverend Walter Davies ('Gwallter Mechain'), writing from Penmaen Dovey n[ea]r Machynlleth and Llanrhaiadr, Oswestry, to Thomas Stephens ('Casnodyn'). Subjects touched upon include D. Silvan Evans's orthography [i.e. Llythyraeth yr iaith Gymraeg], the 'Madogwys', the Llangollen essay, the (new) bishop of Bangor, the Hengwrt manuscripts and articles for Archaeologia Cambrensis.
