Barddoniaeth, etc.

A composite volume containing poetry by John Roberts ('Sion Lleyn'), 1768-71, Dafydd ap Gwilym, Owen Ellis (Nant), Will. Jones y gwydd, Mathew Owen, Huw Rober[t]s, John Dafydd, Syr Rhys yr offeiriad (llanfair), Owen Gruffydd, J. Rhydderch, Wm Elias, Edward Moris, Ifan Gruffydd leiaf, G[utto'r] Glyn, Einian ap Gwalchmai, D[afydd] Nanmor, William Phylip, Huw ab Ifan, Edmund Prys, Gruffydd Phylip, [Robert Prichard] 'Robin Raber', Dafydd Owain o'r Gaerwen ('Marwnad Robert Roberts Pregethwr enwog yn mhlith y Methodistiaid ...') and Gronwy Owen, followed by a collection of the poems of the Reverend Mr Gronwy Owen ('Casgliad o waith y Parch. Mr Gronwy Owen, a Alwei ei hun Gronwy Ddu o Fôn'), with items by [Evan Evans] 'Ieuan Brydydd hir', Huw Huws Alias y Bardd Coch o Fôn, Lewis Morys (poetry and a letter) and Rhobert Huws o Benmynydd ('Robin ddu o Fon'). The contents also include some pedigrees (Achau Penyberth, Richard Llwyd o Griciaith, Bach y Saint, Penllech., Wern Penmorfa, Mostyn, Cors-y-Gedol, Castell-march, Cefn-Llanfair, Wern fawr, Penarth. etc.), 'Ychydig o hanesion' ('Am feibion Noa', etc.), miscellaneous notes, weaving patterns etc. The volume is written in several hands: pp. 1-84 are probably in the autograph of John Roberts ('Siôn Lleyn'); pp. 117-124 are in the autograph of Robert Prichard ('Robin 'Raber') and most of the remainder, if the lettering on the spine is correct, could be in the autograph of John Thomas ('Siôn Wyn o Eifion').

Barddoniaeth,

An exercise-book marked on the first page 'Copy No. 16' containing transcripts probably by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') of poetry by Evan Pritchard ('Ieuan Lleyn'; 1769-1832), with one or two items by John Roberts ('Sion Lleyn'), W[illia]m T[h]omas [?1790-1861] and William Williams. The final item ('Cywydd St. Cowrda' by [Hywel Rheinallt]) has no name appended to it and is incomplete. The poems appear to have been transcribed in separate sections and put together later.

'Cronfa Dafydd Ddu', etc.

A composite volume compiled by Owen Williams, Fronheulog, Waunfawr in 1857. It comprises: I. 'Y Gronfa' (pp. 1-200), largely in the hand of David Thomas ('Dafydd Ddu Eryri'), containing an introduction ('Y Rhagymadrodd') signed 4 October 1790; an English translation by D[avid] T[homas] of two lines of poetry by Gwalchmai; 'Cyfieithiad o Awdl Sibli (Sibyl's Ode, translated by the Revd. Gor[onwy] Owen)' ('See the above, versified in D. Thomas's poetical collection'); etymons of Mr Jones of Llanegryn, Mr L. Morris, and D. Tho[ma]s; extracts from letters from the Revd. D. Thomas' (p. 123) and 'This MSS (with several others) has been bequethed to me, by the Rev. David Ellis, late Rector of Cruccaith in Caernarvonshire. D. Thomas' (p. 189). Ii. Inset are three leaves containing transcripts of a letter from Edmund Francis to [ ] (the writer's health, the recipient's preaching engagement) (incomplete) and of a letter from D. Thomas ['Dafydd Ddu Eryri'] to [John Roberts, 'Siôn Lleyn'], 1810 (the sale of the writer's [Corph y Gaingc]). Written on the inside lower cover is a long note by O[wen] Williams, Fronheulog, Waunfawr, 1857, of which the following is an extract, - 'Myfi a gesglais gynhwysedd y llyfr hwn o'r hen ysgrifiau a ddaeth i'm dwylaw oeddynt eiddo Dafydd Ddu Eryri ac a delais am eu rhwymo yn nghyd megys y gwelir yma er's llawer o flynyddoedd yn ol ...'.

Gwaith Ieuan Lleyn, etc.

A composite volume written almost entirely in the autograph of Evan Prichard ('Ieuan Lleyn' or 'Bardd Bryncroes'; 1769-1832), with some additions by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'). The volume is in two parts, the first part (pp. 1-198) containing poetry mainly by Ieuan Lleyn, with some items also by John Jones, Glan y Gors (beginning wanting), R. Ll. Ddu, Cyllidydd, Pwllheli, 1821, Morrus Dwyfech alias Morrus ab Ifan ab Einion, Owen Gruffydd, Thomas Glyn Llifon, Rich[ar]d Hughes, Cadwaladr Cesail, Sion Roger, D. Drefriw and G. Felyn, y Parchedig Evan Evans 'Ieuan Brydydd Hir', Rod. Jones y Crydd, Dafydd Thomas ('Dafydd Ddu Eryri'), Rhobyn or Bettws [Robert Williams ('Robert ap Gwilym Ddu')], W[illia]m Llyn, W[illia]m Thomas y Llongwr, Ebeneser Tomas neu Cybi Eifion, [David Owen] 'Dewi Wyn', and [John Roberts ] 'S[ion] Lleyn'. Other items in the first part include a draft of a letter, undated, from Evan Pr[ichard] [i.e. 'Ieuan Lleyn'] to an unnamed correspondent (p. 89) (a request for [the mastership of] the free school belonging to the parishes of Rhiw, Bryncroes, Aberdaron and Llanfaelrhys if W[illia]m Owen is turned out), a (?)copy of a letter, 1791, from Ieuan Rich[ar]d, Ty Mawr to an unnamed correspondent whom he addresses as 'Enwog Fardd' (p. 95) (he was unable to attend the Eisteddfod held at Llanrwst; verse in strict and free metre), a (?)translation of a speech by Mr Hodgins [sic], an operative cotton spinner, respecting the Combination Laws, and a speech in Welsh on freedom ('From Walter Davies's Essay [Rhyddid (1791) ]'). The pages following (i.e. 191-8) appear to be in the autograph of John Roberts ('Siôn Lleyn'). Between part I and part II are some items (press cuttings, poetry, etc.) inserted by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'), including 'Gwaith Siarl Marc'. Preceding a number of blank pages are two letters from Ieuan Lleyn to Siôn Lleyn, the one undated (?copy), the other written in 1791 from Ty Mawr to Mr John Roberts at Rhyd y clafrdy, Lleyn, containing lines in the 'cywydd' metre by 'Ieuan Fardd Bryncroes' (another of the bardic names used by Ieuan Lleyn). Part II is in three sections, the first consisting of 90 pp. and containing poetry by Gronwy Ddu o Fôn, Robert ab Gwilym [Robert Williams ('Robert ap Gwilym Ddu')], Llanystumdwy, Hywel ab Reinallt, Hywel ab Daf. ab Ieuan ab Rhys, W[illia]m Lleyn, Rhys Llwyd ab Rhys ab Ricart, Deio ab Ieuan Du, Tudur Aled, H. ab O. Gwynedd, John Fychan o Gaergai, Thomas Llwyd or penman, M.D.(qr. Morrys Dwyfech), Daf[y]dd Thomas, Michael Prichard, Llanllyfni, Humphrey Daf[y]dd ab Evan, Clochydd Llanbry[n]mai[r], Tho[ma]s Evans, Richard Philips, Gwyrfyl Ferch Howel Vaughn, Dafydd Ddu o Hiraddug, Dafydd ab Rhys, Morys ab Howel ab Tudor, Sion Tudur o wicwair, Sion Cent, Mr Thomas Prys, Plas Iolyn, Edward Ralph neu Râff, Rhys Cain, Ieuan Tew Brydydd, Bedo Hafesb, Syr Robert Myltwn, Ieuan Brydydd hir, Tudur Penllyn, Syr Rhys o Garno, Daf[y]dd Llwyd ap Llywelyn Gryffydd, Esqr. o Fathafarn y[n] swydd Drefaldwyn and Bedo Brwynllys (or Gryffydd ap Ieuan ap Llywelyn fychan). There are copies of the Lord's Prayer and the Apostles Creed in Breton and Cornish on pages 34-6. This section was written c. 1797-99 at Llangian and at Llanddeiniolen, where it was completed 31 May 1799 (p.90). Part IIb comprises 38 pp. and contains poetry by Ieuan Lleyn, Huw Ifan Gynt o Lanllyfni alias Hywel Eryri, y Parchedig Evan Evans alias Ieuan y Prydydd hir and W[illiam Evans or Fedw arian, preceded by a list of contents. The final section (pp. 11-54) contains poetry by Siôn Dafydd Laes (John Davies alias Penllyn), Lewis Owain o Dyddyn y Garreg, Syr Rhys or Drewenn, Gutto Glynn, S[ion] Tud[ur], D. Gwilym [Dafydd ap Gwilym], Griffith Philyp 'o Ardudwy y' Meirion', Daf[y]dd Thomas alias Daf[y]dd Ddu or Eryri, Ieuan Deulwyn 'o blwyf Pendeulwyn Gerllaw Cydweli Caerfyrddin', Lewis Glyn cothi, Thomas Prys P[la]s Iolyn, Tomas Derllys 'am a wn i' and Rhys Ednyfed, followed by a sketch of a ship ('Debora'), verses entitled 'Brynau [sic] Iwerddon', etc. and 'Sylwiadau ar Wneuthyriad Dyn'. Poetry, etc.

A composite volume from the collection of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') written in several hands of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and comprising ten main sections: (I) The first section (pp. 1-121 and some unnumbered items) contains poetry by Tomas Edwards Nant, S[ion] Owen, [David Owen] 'Dewi Wyn Eifion' [sic] and (mainly) Robert Williams ('Robert ap Gwilym Ddu'), some possibly in his autograph. Other items include a list of books ('Catalek of all ye books that I Have'), some accounts headed 'Cost Capel garn talwyd' and 'heb Daly am Capel garn', observations entitled 'Lwybr Dyn neu Ysdyriaethau ar bedair rhan oes Dyn' by Robert Williams, a letter, 1845, from Ellis Owen, Cefn y Meusydd, to Mr Robert Williams, Bard, Bettws fawr, Llanystumdwy, containing verses by Robert ab Gwilym Ddu entitled 'Pererindod o'r Aipht i Ganaan; and a list of poems by ['Robert ap Gwilym Ddu']. There are also some press cuttings and other additions by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'). (Ii) A memoir of David Owen ('Dewi Wyn o Eifion') by and in the autograph of John Thomas ('Siôn Wyn o Eifion'). (Iii) Miscellaneous items including 'Pymtheg Llwyth Gwynedd', poetry by Huw Llwyd Cynfal, Dafydd ap Sion and y Parchedig Mr Goronwy Owen o Fôn, and draft of a letter from 'Dyngarydd' [?David Owen ('Dewi Wyn o Eifion') ] to Mr Gomer' [? for Seren Gomer ], and 'A Memorandum Book' in the autograph of John Thomas ('Siôn Wyn o Eifion') containing notes on natural history, etc. in English transcribed from various printed sources. (Iv) Notes in Welsh in the autograph of John Thomas ('Siôn Wyn o Eifion') on theological subjects including extracts from 'Patrick's Places' i.e. the work of Patrick Hamilton, followed by short accounts of Phoenicia, Palestine, Assyria, Babylon, etc. (V) An incomplete poem entitled 'Carol Plygain am Bwrcas Crist tros eu [sic] Ddyweddi ...... (Vi) Two items in the autograph of John Thomas ('Siôn Wyn o Eifion') entitled 'Cyfrifiad byr am amryw o enwau neu Sectau a ymddangosasant yn y byd' (? incomplete) and 'Ateb i rai holiadau, mewn Llythyr oddi wrth yr Ysgrifennydd at ei ewythr John Roberts', which last item includes observations by Michael Roberts on one of the questions. (Vii) This section consists of sixteen pages and one loose folio. The first fourteen pages are in the autograph of William Elias, c. 1731-44, and contain poetry by Evan ap Llywelyn Vychan (beginning wanting), D. Parry, William Elias, J. Rhydderch, Owen Griffiths and D[afydd] N[anmor]. The next two pages contain verses in English by Gr: Lloyd and the loose folio contains 'englynion', one by Moris ap Evan ap Dafydd ['Morus Dwyfech']. A note at the foot of p. 9 reads 'Oed ein harglwydd, pan dorwyd, y ffordd y mynydd Bwlch Derwin gynta, 1739, y rhan isa, ai gorphen: Mehefin 18: 1740: Wm Ellias, a Griffith Davidd o fodychen, overseers', and there is a recipe for making ink on p. 10. (Viii) 'Englynion' by Edward Charles and a number of Welsh hymns (author's name not given). (Ix) This section is in the autograph of John Roberts [?'Siôn Lleyn'], 1767, and contains poetry by Roger Thomley, Michel Prichiard, Sion Thomas Bod-edern, Gwen Arthur, William Elias, Owen Griffith, John Philip, John Roberts, Hugh Roberts, Thomas Jones, Rich[ar]d Parry niwbwrch, ? W. Ell... and John Rogar [sic]. (X) Veterinary and other recipes, mainly in Welsh.
