Katheryn of Berain

A volume containing an offprint of Sir John Ballinger, 'Katheryn of Berain, a study in North Wales family history', Y Cymmrodor, 40 (1929), 1-42, which was given to R. D. Roberts by the author in 1929 in recognition of the help he received while correcting the proofs (see inside front cover, ff. i verso-iv). Genealogical and biographical notes on the Salesbury and related families, [c. 1934], in the hand of R. D. Roberts, occur on ff. ii verso-iv, pp. 2, 45-54 and genealogical tables I-III, together with press cuttings, 1930-1933, relating to Katheryn of Berain and Mrs Hester Piozzi tipped in on pp. 55-56, photographs of Plas Berain, Llanefydd, Denbighshire (3), 1906-1923, pasted on f. iv verso and inside back cover, and cuttings from William R. Owen, Catalogue of the loan collection of Welsh antiquities ... (Liverpool, 1902) tipped in on f. viii (see MS 13910B). Letters to R. D. Roberts from Sir John Ballinger (6), 1928-1929, and A. Foulkes-Roberts (1), 1931, are tipped in on the front coverand on ff. i verso-iii, iv and v verso.

Pedigree book of 'Eben Fardd',

A volume almost entirely in the hand of Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd') containing pedigrees mainly of North Wales families (e.g. 'Achau awdur y Bardd Cwsg' [i.e. Ellis Wynne], the families of Herbert of Powis, etc., Mostyn of Mostyn, etc., Salisbury of Lleweni, Hanmer of Hanmer, Meirick of Bodorgan, etc.). Inset is a pedigree chart by 'Eben Fardd' entitled 'Llwyth Ceridwen-Gwehelyth LlĂȘn ac Awenydd Eifion yn y XIX Ganrif' (references to Owen Owens ('Owain Lleyn'), Robert Williams ('Robt. ap Gwilym Ddu'), Ellis Owen, Cefnymeusudd, Robt. Isaac Jones ('Alltud Eifion'), Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Vardd'), etc.), together with an undated covering letter by the scribe.

A commonplace book entitled 'Thomas Salubury's Book of Scraps and Diversities', compiled by Thomas Salusbury of Denbigh (b. 1761), third son of Robert Salusbury of Cotton Hall. It contains medical and culinary recipes, many of them attributed to North Wales Physicians; notes on contemporary events during the Napoleonic Wars; press cuttings; anecdotes of George II and Lord Chatham; notes on sermons preached by the Rev. Mr. Edwards at Wrexham, 1787, Bishop Horsley, 1805, the Rev. Mr. Mason at Denbigh, 1807, and the Rev. Mr. Philips at Denbigh, 1818; notes on notable members of the Salusbury family; genealogical extracts from the family Bible at Cotton Hall; and particulars of the birthdays of the compiler's relatives, friends, and acquaintances.
