Biographical material

The file comprises biographical and background information including draft manuscript letters from David Jones to Captain St Luke, 1929, and to Rex Nan Kivell; a catalogue of the David Jones exhibition at the Redfern gallery, 1948; photocopies of family documents, David Jones' demobilisation certificate form the Royal Welsh Fuseliers, 1919, and his certificate of baptism, 1921; photocopies of six letters from David Jones to Colin Hughes, 1969-1972; letters to René Hague from Mike Richey, Tony Hyne, Nicolete Gray, Jim Ede, Tom Burns and others relating to David Jones; and copies of articles by Kathleen Raine and Arthur R. Dai Greatcoat

The group comprises material collected by René Hague while editing Dai Greatcoat : a self-portrait of David Jones in his letters, (London : Faber and Faber, 1980), a collection of letters to H. S. (Jim) Ede, Harman Grisewood, T. F. (Tom) Burns, and René Hague. There are copies of letters from David Jones to them and others, and also biographical material, setting copies, and other material relating to the publication. They have been arranged into two groups and listed by Harman Grisewood.

Draft letters

The file comprises miscellaneous manuscript drafts of letters from David Jones to friends and associates, including William Blissett, Jim and Helen Ede, Dame Edith [Sitwell], Ethel [Watts], Rachel Bromwich, Vernon [Watkins], Aneirin [Talfan Davies], [Rhydwen] Williams, [Thomas] Charles Edwards, Prof. Thomas Jones and others. Many of the drafts are incomplete, many only of the first paragraph of the letter. There is also a short note from D. Gwenallt Jones, 1957.

Drafts

The file comprises a complete manuscript draft of 'The Book of Balaam's Ass' numbered by David Jones 1-15, 15a-54, 54-56; a carbon typescript of the above with corrections by David Jones, pages 1-35; a typescript with corrections by David Jones of the part of 'Balaam's Ass' which was printed in The Sleeping Lord, numbered 1-16; alternative manuscript opening and note, and alternative typescript sheets of 'Balaam's Ass'; and a typed copy of a letter from David Jones to Jim and Helen [Ede], 1939. The file also contains notes by René Hague and Harman Grisewood.

The file comprises approximately 230 letters and postcards, 1936-1964 (mostly 1942 onwards), from Helen Sutherland to David Jones. Many of the letters are undated or incomplete. There is also a letter to David Jones from Jim Ede, 1951.

The file comprises typed copies of letters to Bernard Wall from David Jones, 1949-1972; an original letter from Jim Ede to René Hague, 1977; an original letter from Valentine [Kilbride], a handweaver at Ditchling, to René Hague, 1978; photocopies of a letter from David Jones to Vicky [Ingrams née Reed] from Cairo, and to Vicky and Cecile from Jerusalem, 1934; and a typescript copy of a letter from René Hague to Valerie Wynne-Williams, 1978.

Letters from David Jones

The file comprises four bundles of typescript copies of David Jones' letters to Jim Ede, Tom Burns, Harman Grisewood and Rene Hague, arranged chronologically into four sections as in the book. There is also a letter from David Jones to Philip Hagreen, and a letter from René Hague to Colin [Hughes], 1978.

The file comprises manuscript drafts of letters from David Jones to some of his dearest friends: René Hague, Valerie Wynne Williams (and to her mother Mrs Price), Harman Grisewood, Helen Sutherland, Tom Burns, Jim Ede, Morag [McLennan], and Saunders Lewis.

The file comprises a xerox copy of a letter from David Jones to Jim Ede, 1935, which is at Kettle's Yard Cambridge, in which he lists his biographical information 'D. J. life for Jim Ede'; typescript copies of letters from David Jones to Jim Ede and Helen Ede, 1927-1929, 1933-1936; notes to René Hague from Harman Grisewood for the contents of The Dying Gaul and The Roman Quarry, 1976; and a sketch possibly of the last supper by David Jones.

The file comprises typescript copies of five letters from David Jones to Jim Ede, 1944-1952, and two to René Hague, 1960-1964, and two letters from René Hague to Peter [Orr] and Nicolete Gray, 1978.

The file comprises typescript copies of material for The Roman Quarry, 1979-1981, with a manuscript page by David Jones.
