Documents relating to the Commonwealth,

A collection of documents, 1651-[19 cent., first ½], relating to the Commonwealth and Protectorate in England. They include a warrant, 7 November 1651, from the Council of State, signed by its president John Bradshaw, authorising the merchant Charles Longland to act as their agent in Livorno, Tuscany, in supplying the parliamentarian fleet and providing intelligence (item i); a commission, 15 October 1655, from Oliver Cromwell (signed 'Oliver P.'), appointing George Langford as chirurgeon [surgeon] in Col. Goffe's regiment of horse (item ii); and a further commission, 11 July 1659, from Parliament, signed by W[illia]m Lenthall, Speaker, appointing Langford to the rank of Cornet in a troop of horse under Col. Thomas Saunders (item iii).
Also included is an engraving, 1793, of a 1654 portrait of William Lenthall (item iv); and an engraving, [19 cent., first ½], depicting the trial of Charles I (item v). Two of the documents have papered seals affixed: Cromwell's private seal (item ii) and the seal of the Council of State (Item i).

An incomplete copy of a treatise signed 'Cornwell 24 April 1632', on 'the expedition of bills in the Commons'; a copy of 'Sir Wm. Scroggs's speech to the Lord Chancellor upon his receiving his commission of Judge of ye Court of Common Pleas, 1678'; 'a panegyrick on Oliver Cromwell by Mr. Waller, 1655'; and two songs by Thomas Durfey beginning 'Remember yee Whiggs wt was formerly done' and 'Now at length the riddle is expounded'.

A typescript copy of an account of the 'Awakening' in Pembrokeshire, especially in Haverfordwest, 1739-1767, compiled by Brother Nyberg; an account of religious awakenings in Pembrokeshire during the first half of the eighteenth century; an incomplete draft report of proceedings arising out of a shipping disaster at Milford; a 'pull' of a review of Henry Owen; Old Pembroke Families, 1902; a history of the Guildhall, Council Chamber, and Market at Haverfordwest; typescript extracts from Haverfordwest Town Council records, 1660-1730; copies of a minute of a meeting of the Haverfordwest Town Council, 6 December 1848, relating to Oliver Cromwell's letter and warrant for the demolition of Haverfordwest castle, correspondence relating to the same, and notes on the trusts of Haverfordwest Grammar school; notes on Haverfordwest charters; and a draft of a 'Guide to St. Davids'. The manuscripts are mainly in the hand of Thomas Lewis James.
