The file includes photocopies of letters from Augustus John to Philip Heseltine, 1920-1929; a transcript, 1972, of a letter, 1923, from the artist to Thomas Hardy, from the Thomas Hardy Memorial Collection, thanking the latter for sitting for him and stating that his portrait had been purchased by the Fitzwilliam Museum; Mary [Keene], [1945]-[1948]; and Dame Laura Knight, 1938, together with a press cutting from The Evening Standard, 1968, containing a profile of her.

John Cowper Powys letters to Phyllis Playter, 1922

Some fifty-two love letters, 1922, from John Cowper Powys to his companion, Phyllis Playter. The majority of the letters were written during the course of Powys's lecture tours in the United States, while others describe a visit to England and contain accounts of meetings with members of his family and with the novelist Thomas Hardy (f. 91 recto-verso).

Some one hundred and five love letters and telegrams, 1926, from John Cowper Powys to his companion, Phyllis Playter. The majority of the letters were written during the course of Powys's lecture tours in the United States, while others describe a visit to England and contain accounts of meetings with members of his family and with the novelist Thomas Hardy (ff. 209 verso, 210, 215 verso-216, 219 verso).
Also included are one letter to Phyllis Playter from John Cowper Powys's sister-in-law, Alyse Gregory (f. 181), and two from his sister, Philippa ('Katie') Powys (ff. 197, 203).

John Cowper Powys and Llewelyn Powys letters to Margaret Moon

Fifty letters, 1937-1961, from John Cowper Powys (ff. 6-49, 51-60 verso), one letter, 1959, from his companion, Phyllis Playter (f. 50), and six letters and two postcards, 1937-1939 (ff. 62-72), together with an inscribed photograph, 1937 (f. 61), from Llewelyn Powys, to Margaret Moon (afterwards Margaret Newton). Many of the letters contain reminiscences of Montacute, Somerset, childhood home of the Powys brothers, and birthplace of Margaret Moon. Two of the letters from John Cowper Powys (ff. 30-32 verso) are in the hand of Phyllis Playter, writing as his amanuensis. Also included are three letters, 1990, from Margaret Newton to Paul Roberts, editor of the Powys Society Newsletter (ff. 1-5).
The letters contain references to Thomas Hardy (ff. 13 verso, 40 recto-verso, 48), Theodore Dreiser (f. 44), W. B. Yeats (f. 29 verso) and Theodore Francis Powys (ff. 38 verso, 39 verso).
