An essay entitled 'O Ddinodedd i Enwogrwydd. John Gibson, R.A., y Mynor - Gerfiwr Cymreig Bydenwog' [From Obscurity to Fame. John Gibson, R.A., the world-famous, Welsh marble sculptor], by the Reverend B. Menai Francis [Congregational minister]. The work had won a prize at an eisteddfod held at Conway, and according to the author's obituary notice in Y Dysgedydd, 1930, pp. 73-8, had been published in an unspecified, Welsh newspaper. The present copy consists of cuttings, printed on one side only, mounted in a note-book. A manuscript list of chapter headings is given at the beginning, and a postcard photograph of the bust of John Gibson in Conway parish church, has been pasted in as frontispiece.

Six letters, 1844-1876, from the artist Penry Williams to the sculptor William Theed, the painter Edward William Cooke, and an unnamed correspondent. The subjects include a proposed visit to Wales by Williams, his travels in Italy with the sculptor John Gibson, the latter's failing health and his death at Rome, with reference to various English artists in Italy and to works by Gibson, Theed and Williams.

Letters to John Thomas ('Pencerdd Gwalia')

Letters, 1843-1901, to Pencerdd Gwalia mainly from friends and acquaintances. Covering the greater part of his career, they contain references to his concerts, compositions and travels, and to musical circles in London and Wales, and include one letter, 1901, granting permission to use the title 'Harpist to the King' (f. 132).
Correspondents include John Gibson (1) 1855, Augusta Hall, Lady Llanover (4) 1851-1853, John Jones (Talhaiarn) (1) 1863, Lewis William Lewis (Llew Llwyfo) (1) 1862, Augusta Ada King-Noel, Lady Lovelace (1) 1847, Lord Mostyn (1) 1893, Thomas Oliphant (1) 1861, John Owen (Owain Alaw) (3) 1861, Cipriani Potter (7) 1843-1861, Brinley Richards (1) 1862, and Maria Jane Williams (Llinos) (1) 1853. Also included are a circular letter, 1862, from John Thomas, inviting subscriptions to his Welsh Melodies (f. 109 verso), and two of his draft replies, 1893, 1901, to correspondents (ff. 130, 135).

Letters, papers, press cuttings, photographs and other illustrations, etc., [c. 1853]-[c. 1869], dealing mainly with the statue by John Gibson, R.A. (1790-1866) called 'The Tinted Venus' and probably collected by Mrs Robert Berthon Preston of Liverpool. There are numerous letters from Gibson to Mr & Mrs Preston, the other correspondents including Mr Preston, Owen Jones (1809-1874), Benjamin E. Spence (1822-1866), Lady Eastlake (1809-1893) and persons connected with the International Exhibition of 1862 held in London, where 'The Tinted Venus' was exhibited.
