Letters and papers of George Stephens, goaler and governor of the House of Correction of the county of Carmarthen. They include a notice of promotion to be one of the Inspectors of the Metropolitan Police Force, 29 April, 1844; an invitation, 14 August, 1847, under the signatures of magistrates of the county of Carmarthen, to discharge the duty of goaler till the Quarter Sessions; a certificate of good conduct in the Metropolitan Police Force, 1 September, 1847; a holograph letter, 4 November, 1847, from Charles Bishop, Llandovery, enclosing a copy of the order for the recipient's appointment as county gaoler and governor; eighteen holograph letters, 4-17 November, 1854, from visiting magistrates of Carmarthenshire and others, supporting his application for a similar post in the county of Middlesex; a printed statement of accounts, 21 January, 1870, between George Stephens, late treasurer, and the members and congregation of Zion Calvinistic Church, Carmarthen; a printed 'in memoriam' card of David Price Davies of Pumpsaint, 1874; and a holograph letter, 17 November [1876] from C. H. Spurgeon, Clapham.

Seventeen holograph letters addressed to David Davies, Froodvale. The writers include Charles Bishop, Llandovery, [18]36-1839 (2) (a lease of Tyllwydhir, the recipient's tender for the tithe apportionment of Llandingat), W. R. Davies, Traws Mawr [in Newchurch], 1839 (a request for a valuation of the parish of Conwill [Elfed] for the purposes of a new road rate, the need for a regular electoral registration committee in the parish), Geo. Good, from Croft Cottage, near Carmarthen, 1839 (a request for a valuation of the parish of Nevern for the purposes of tithe apportionment), W[illiam] Howell, Pendine, 1839 (a meeting in connection with tithe apportionment), W. G. Hughes, Carmarthen, 1839 (requesting a valuation of timber on farms purchased by the writer), J. Jones, Brynbran [ Cynwil Gaeo?], 1836 (opinions on the Poor Law Amendment Bill), (endorsed is a draft letter [1836] to [Sir David Davies?], relating to the tithe commutation of Llanwrda, Cayo, Llansawell, and Talley, and to the management of the writer's properties), Morris Jones, Carmarthen, 1838 (Mydrim tithe meeting), E. C. Lord, Receiver General of Taxes, from Lampeter, 1830 (the payment of taxes for the parish of Dale) (endorsed is a draft letter [1836] to [Sir David Davies?] regarding an estimate for the erection of a building), [the Reverend] John Morgan, Talyrhyn [Cil-y-cwm], [18]44 (a request for an alteration in the writer's tithe apportionment), Lewis Morris, Carmarthen, 1839 (2) (requesting the recipient's services in resolving a dispute concerning the tithe apportionment of Nevern), Adam Murray, London, 1838 (the tithe commutation of Llanmihangle Rhosy Corn and Llanlonny), Catherine Price, Langarren, Ross, 1836 (requesting a valuation of timber at Abergwenlas and Troed-y-rh[i]w [in Cil-y-cwm]), A. Thomas, Carmarthen, [18]39 (Mydrim tithe meeting), D[avid] H[erbert] T[hackeray] Griffies Williams [perpetual curate of Llanfihangel Aberbythich], Llwynhelig, [18]44 (a request for the services of the writer on behalf of the tithe owners of the parish of Llanwenog), and Row[land] Williams, Llandovery, [18]39 (information towards a tender for the valuation of Llanfairary Bryn). Also included in the group are a copy of a letter from D[avid] Davies to Morris Sayce, Kington, 1836 (comments on the terms of a lease); an undated draft letter from [David Davies] to [Sir David Davies?] ( the writer's opposition to an advance in the tithes of Talley); a statement, 1841, from Charles Bishop, Llandovery, to David Davies of the amount due from the latter for his proportion of the expense of tithe commutation in the parish of Llandilofawr, together with a receipt, 1842, for the same; and undated particulars of the tithe commutation of David Davies in respect of Talyfan and Mount in Llandilo[-fawr].
