A collection of poetry transcribed by Dafydd Marpole during the period 1775-80. It includes 'cerddi', 'ymddiddanion', 'penillion', 'carolau', 'dyrïau', 'englynion', etc. by Evan Williams (1774), Rowland Hughes ('or Bala'), John (Sion) Griffydd, Hugh Morris, Roger Jones, R. Evan, Dafydd Marpole, Joseph Marpole (1767), John Marpole, Dafydd Evans ('o Lan Silin'), Morys Robert ('o blwy Maentwrog'), John Cadwaladr, Harri Bynner ('o blwy Llanfyllin'), Owen Gruffydd, Mr Jones ('Ficar Llan bryn Mair'), Arthur Jones, Gryffyd[d] Edward ('o Lanfyllin') and Robin Ragad, and anonymous poems. There are numerous critical and textual observations by the scribe. Pp. 15-89 were transcribed from Cwrtmawr MS 231.

A collection of poetry, etc. largely in the hand of David Jones. Examples of the scribe's signatures in the manuscript are dated 1704 and 1708 and the volume may therefore be attributed approximately to this period. It comprises 'carolau', 'cerddi', 'Ymddiddanion' and a 'cywydd' by T. Ed[wards], Hugh Morris, Cad[wala]dr Roberts and Thomas Maurice, together with anonymous poems; a few medical recipes; a table, undated, of the phases of the moon; an account, undated, of monies received [in the Llansilin area]; and a presentment of Edward Jones and Roger Lewis, churchwardens of the parish of Llanarmon mynydd mawr, 1705.

A carelessly compiled collection of 'cerddi' and 'penillion' written for the most part by David Morris, Llanwddyn during the period 1778-84. The majority of the poems are anonymous but a few are attributed to Hugh Morris, David Morris, Humphrey Jones, Griffith Evans, Thomas Edwards ('Twm o'r Nant') (1783), ?David Owen (Ceuna[n]t Coch) and David Llwyd ('o Gowny'). Also included in the volume are a few miscellaneous entries such as a notice of letting of Tynykiln, parish of Llanvehangel, Montgomeryshire, 1778; undated accounts; signatures of Thomas Jones (Cownu), David Davies ('Y Wevar'), etc.; receipts from David Morris, 1779; etc.

Llyfr Dolwar Fach, a volume of Welsh poetry.

An eighteenth century manuscript consisting of miscellaneous material in the hand of the Reverend Edward Gamage [rector of the parish of St. Athan, co. Glamorgan, 1717-1734] with additions in later eighteenth century hands (see TLLM, tt. 106-07; IM, t. 309; and IMCY, tt. 58-60, 68, 171). In Edward Gamage's own hand are transcripts of Welsh strict- and free-metre poems by Thomas Morgan 'o Dilla garw', Hopkin y Gwaedd 'o Fargam', Rob. Tho[ma]s 'o Sant y Bryd', Thomas Leyshon o'r Prysg', Miles W[illia]m, Thomas W[ilia]m 'o Dregolwyn', Thomas Llewelyn, vicar of Llancarvan, Dafydd Thomas 'o blwyf y Bettws', and Llewelyn ab Iefan, a copy of a letter in Welsh, 23 November 1726, from the said Edward Gamage himself from Sant Athan, to Llewelyn ab Iefan of the parish of Llangrallo [co. Glamorgan], poet, in reply to a request for genealogical information relating to the Stradling family, and, at the reverse end of the volume, 'A Continuation of ye Exposition of ye Church Catechism for ye use of ye Children of ye Parish of Lantwitt Major by E. Gamage, Lecturer and Catechist there', a recipe for a dog bite, and ? sermon notes. Later additions to the volume include transcripts of three stanzas of Welsh verse, one being by Ph'p Morgan b'r Sarnfawr' and one by his daughter Eleanor, miscellaneous English verse some dated 1768, and a few financial items. Four imperfect, printed leaves from a ? seventeenth century edition of metrical psalms with prayers for use in private houses have been bound in at the end of the volume.

A composite volume consisting of a number of home-made booklets containing miscellaneous items in the hand of Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg') bound together. P. 31 is inscribed 'Gwallter Dymapys ar Drin Tir'. Pp. 37-52 contain a short treatise in Welsh on agricultural husbandry with the superscription 'Llyma Lyfr Gwallter Demapys [Walter Map or Mapes, the medieval author, fl. late twelfth century] sef cynghorion hen wr megis y dysgai ac y cynghorai ei ab ynghylch llafuriaw Tir a threfnu ysgrublaid fal hynn'. According to an end note (p. 52) the treatise was copied 'O Lyfr Mr. Richards o Langrallo', but for the opinion that it was compiled by Edward Williams himself and attributed to Walter Map see TLLM, t. 3. P. 53 contains a note, allegedly taken from Thomas Truman of Pant Lliwydd's book of pedigrees, linking Walter Map and his family with the village of Trewallter and parish of Llancarfan, co. Glamorgan, but for the falsity of this claim which is probably an Edward Williams forgery see again TLLM, t. 3. Pp. 54-68 contain a further treatise in Welsh on agricultural husbandry with the superscription 'Cyngor yr Hen Gyrys Megis yr oedd ynteu yn cynghori ei fab fal hynn'. This, according to a note on p. 68, was copied from a volume in the possession of the Reverend Thomas Evans of Brechfa in 1800. For the connection between this and the treatise on agriculture which is to be found in the 'Red Book of Hergest' and which was published in The Bulletin of the Board of Celtic Studies, vol. II, pp. 8-16, see TLLM, t. 3. Pp. 69-196 (previously a separate booklet paginated 1-126) contain (pp. 69-116) genealogical and historical data relating to the saints of the island of Britain described (p. 69) as 'Achau Saint Ynys Prydain o Lyfr Thomas Hopcin o Langrallo a hwnnw yn un o Lyfrau Thomas ab Ifan o Dre Brynn yn yr un Plwyf a ysgrifenwyd gantho ynghylch y flwyddyn 1670', and (pp. 117-82) further genealogical and historical data relating to the said saints described (p. 117) as 'Achau a Gwelygorddau Saint Ynys Prydain o Lyfr Hir Thomas Truman o Bant Lliwydd Plwyf Llansannwr yin Morganwg' and with a concluding note (p. 182) 'O Lyfr hir Tomas Truman o Bant Lliwydd a fuassai yn un o Lyfrau Thomas ab Ifan o Dre Brynn'. Pp. 197-232 contain miscellaneous items including notes relating to 'Cadair Tir Iarll', aspects of Welsh bardism, 'cerddi arwest', the revision by Benwyll arwyddfardd of rules relating to rank and armorial bearings, etc., a few triads, references to 'Cadair Llanfihangel Glynn Afan', 'Cadair Llangynwyd Tir Iarll', 'Cadair y Wennarth', and 'Cadair Cefn Gorwydd', and anecdotes relating to Antoni Pywel and Ieuan Deulwyn. Pp. 233-300 form a booklet inscribed on the outer, upper cover (p. 233) '1808 Prydyddiaeth Cymmysg Iolo Morganwg' and containing (pp. 235-57) free- and strict-metre Welsh poems by [Edward Williams] 'Iolo Morganwg' himself. Pp. 301-32 form another booklet with a 'title-page' inscribed 'Anreg Beirdd Ynys Prydain I blant bychain Cymru . . . Argrafwyd (sic) yn Llundain, 1794. Pris 2d', and with the contents consisting of a list of Welsh proverbs or popular sayings headed 'Glam[organ] proverbs'.

A manuscript consisting largely of transcripts and memoranda by Mary Richards and Thomas Richards of Darowen. The volume appears originally to have been used as an account book of receipts and disbursements in respect of the farms of Llwyn, Cafnmaelen and Byrthlwydd [parish of Dolgellau, Merioneth], 1799-1802, and also to record biographies of [James Crichton, 'The Admirable'], Sir Francis Walsingham, Sir Francis Drake and William Cecil, Lord Burghley. An imperfect late seventeenth and early eighteenth century commonplace book of Howell Tanat (Tanatt, Tannat, Tannatt), Trewylan Isa, Llansanffraid-ym-Mechain, Montgomeryshire. It contains poetry in free metres by Oliver Rogers, Humfrey Dauyd ap Ivan, William Philips, Rolant Voughan [sic], Howell Tanatt, Edward Rolant and Hugh Moris, and anonymous poems; English verses; accounts, 1685-1707 and undated (household, farm, payments to craftsmen, assessments of lewns in Llansantffraid and Llandysilio, etc.); short depositions touching a suit in the Court of Chancery relating to Robt. Kinaston [of Trewylan Ganol, Llansanffraid-ym-Mechain] containing references to a plot and the keeping of a Jesuit priest; household and medical recipes; an incomplete dictionary of English phrases with their Latin equivalents; scriptural notes; a prayer; etc.

A volume compiled by Hugh Jones ('Cowper'), [c. 1755], and containing transcripts of 'cywyddau', 'englynion', 'cerddi', and 'carolau' by Hugh Jones, Sion Tydyr, 'mei[str?]' Williams 'or hialld', Sion ap Robert 'o farch aled', Richiart Ffolkes (Henfrun), Thomas Edward (tai'n Rhos), Edward Morys, Morgan ap Huw Lewis, Hugh Morus, Mredith ap Pres, Thomas Prichis [Prys], etc.

A composite volume of poetry in strict and free metre by various poets including Mabclaf ab Llywarch, Aneirin Gwawdrwydd [sic], Evan Evans ('Ieuan Brydydd Hir'), [Robert Williams] 'Robert ab Gwilym Ddu', [David Owen] 'Dewi Wyn', [Griffith Williams] 'Gyttun Peris', [Richard Jones] 'Gwyndaf Eryri', [William Edwards] 'Gwilym Padarn', [Owen Williams] 'Owain Gwyrfai', [Evan Prichard] 'Ieuan Lleyn', [David Thomas] 'D[afydd] Ddu o Eryri', John Davies and Michael Prichard. The contents also include a list headed 'The Names of some of the most Ancient Bards and Historians and the Time wherein [sic] they Flourished'. The lettering on the spine reads 'Llyfr Ieuan Lleyn, 1799' and the volume, except for the last five folios, appears to have been written between 1799 and 1822. The last four folios are partly in the hand of D. Silvan Evans and the folio immediately preceding them is probably earlier in date than 1799 and may belong to Cwrtmawr MS 513B, Part II.

A volume lettered 'Llyfr J. Morris - II', being a collection of 'cerddi', 'englynion', etc. by Thomas Edwards ['Twm o'r Nant'], Hugh Jones ('o Langwm'), Dafydd Jones ('neu'n Gyffredyn y tailiwr hir') and Hugh Morris ('yr Englyn diwaetha medd rhai Ag nid annhebig a wnaeth ...'), and anonymous poems. There are copious marginal entries which are entirely irrelevant to the text.

A small book of transcripts of Welsh poetry in the hand of John Davies, Pentrefoelas. It contains 'Cywydd y pren eirin yn dair rhan'; 'Cywydd yn erbyn Medd-dod'; and 'cywyddau' by Llewelyn ab Evan, Edward ap Rheece, Meredydd ap Rhys, William Cynwal, and 'englynion' by Owen Gruffydd, Moris Powel, Edward Maelor, and Simwnt Vaughan.

A late eighteenth century manuscript in the hand of John Morris containing a collection of 'carolau' and 'cerddi' by Jonathan Hughes, Llangollen, together with a 'cerdd' and a 'carol' by Daniel Jones, and a carol each by Jo[h]n Edw[ard]s (Glyn Cei[rio]g) and Arthur Jones. All the poems by Jonathan Hughes are included in the author's Bardd a Byrddau (y Mwythig, 1778). At the beginning of the volume is 'Bannau yr llyfyr hwn', being a table of titles and first lines, and the numbers of verses, of each carol. Paste-downs on the inside upper and lower covers contain a note and an 'englyn' by D[afydd] M[orris], Llanfair [Caereinion], 1868, etc.

A late eighteenth century collection of poetry in the hand of John Morris, Glan'r Afon containing 'carolau', 'cerddi', 'ymddiddanion', etc. in free metres and a few englynion by Hugh Morus, Edward Samuel ('Person Llan-garw Gwyn'), [David Jones] ('Dewi Fardd'), Richard Parry ('or Ddiserth'), Morys ap Robert ('o'r Bala'), Robert Evans ('o blwy Meifod'), Mr Robert Wynn ('Vicar Gwyddelwern'), Owen Gruffydd, Ellis Rowland (Harlech), Matthew Owen ('o Langar'), Mr W. Williams ('Person Llan Aelian yn Rhos'), 'Dai Seion' ('o Gaernarfon'), Mr William Williams [recte Wynn] ('o Langynhafal'), Sion Powel ('o Lansannan'), Edward Richard, [Walter Davies] ('Gwallter Mechain'), Jonathan Hughes, Edward Morris, Lewis Glyn Cothi and David Ellis. The collection was begun probably in 1788.

The volume is almost entirely in the autograph of Margaret Davies [Coetgae-du, Trawsfynydd]. The 'cywyddau' have been numbered, possibly at a date later than the time of writing, and it appears that several folios are wanting at the beginning. The initials 'P. W.' or 'P. Wm.' sometimes occur at the end of a 'cywydd' near the name of the poet.

A manuscript described as 'Llyfr o hen areithiau a Chywyddau' in the hand of Michael Prichard of Llan Llyfni. It contains poetry, largely in the form of 'cywyddau', by Michael Prichard, Sion Phylipp, Sion Tydur, Rhys Cain, Huw Llwyd Cynfel, Robert ab Howel ab Morgan, William Llyn, Dafydd ab Euan ab Owen, y Rhys ab Ednyfed, Owen Griffith, Thomas Lloyd [recte Prys] (Plas Iolyn), Dafydd Manuel, Wmphrey Dafydd ab Ifan ('Clochydd Llann brenn Mair'), Elis Rowland, Gryffydd ap Llywelyn Fychan, Wiliam Cynwal, Edward ap Rhys, and Thomas Llwyd (Penmen), and anonymous poems; 'Hanes y Twrstan, neu araith S. Tudyr', 'Breuddwyd Sion Tudur', and 'Prognosticasiwn Sion Tydur'; and a mediaeval Welsh glossary ('Llymma bart o'r hen Gymraeg; ar iaith arferedig wrthi') extracted from a book of Thomas Price of Plas Jolyn. The volume was compiled during the period 1726-9. There are a few additions in other hands, among them 'englynion' in praise and in memory of Michael Prichard by William Elias, [Griffith Williams] ('Gutyn Peris'), etc. At the end are two incomplete indexes, the one by Michael Prichard and the other by Owen Williams, Waunfawr. The spine is lettered 'Michael Prichard MS'.

A third volume entitled 'Llyfr o Hen Ganeuon', being a continuation of MSS 166-7 and comprising largely of transcripts by J. H. Davies from manuscripts in the British Museum, in the Cardiff Central Library, in the National Library of Wales and in Jesus College, Oxford of 'carolau', 'dyrïau', 'englynion', etc. by Hugh Roberts, Sion Roger, Hugh Morris, Harri Llwyd, Rowland Vaughan, E[lis] Anwyl, Wm. Phylip, Huw Llwyd, Jo. Griffith [Llanddyfnan], W[atcyn] Clywedog, Hen. Bodwrda, G[ruffudd] N[annau], Gr. Ph[ylip], Ffouck Llwyd ('o Henllan'), Rich. Hug[hes] (Dick Hughes), Thom. Two volumes entitled 'Llyfr o Hen Ganeuon wedi eu cyfansoddi ers 200 mlynedd. 1900'. The volumes are in the hand of J. H. Davies and contain transcripts, with annotations and collations, of 'carolau', 'cerddi', 'dyrïau', 'englynion' and 'awdlau' from the Welsh School and Cymmrodorion groups of manuscripts in the British Museum Additional Collection (MSS 14866-15089). Among the insets are a folio from an eighteenth century manuscript containing an imperfect free-metre poem ('Can'), and transcripts of free-metre poems in the hands of J. Glyn Davies and E. A. Lewis of University College of Wales, Aberystwyth.
