The papers include sub-bundles comprising loose papers, 1902-1936, including share certificates in the Estates & Mining Co. of Rhodesia, 1902 (wound up in 1912) and the Llandrindod Wells Springs Co., 1921 (in liquidation in 1927), a number of Inland Revenue estate duty forms relating to the estate of Arthur, second lord Ormathwaite, dec., 1921-1934, and letters relating to alterations to the will of the third lord Ormathwate, 1936 (F 5/1), drafts and copies of Ormathwaite’s wills, 1933-1936 (F 5/2), letters relating to a loan of £100 from the Samuel Wilson’s Loan Trust to Edward Stone of Cricklewood, motor trimmer, of which Ormathwaite was one of the sureties, 1936 (F 5/3), loose papers, 1937, including inventories of his furniture and silver plate and an Irish Free State probate of his will (F 5/4), letters, 1937 (F 5/5), letters, 1937-1939 (F 5/6), paid bills, 1937-1939 (F 5/7), and loose papers, 1938-1939 (F 5/8). -- The letter files include mention of Ormathwaite’s memoirs, written out long-hand by his amanuensis, G. W. Sykes, and published by Hutchinson as When I was at court (May-Sept. 1937 passim.). -- The letter from Farrer & Co. to the Express Dairy Co. Ltd in Nov. 1939, in reply to them sending sent in their account is typical of the letters to creditors: “the late Lord Ormathwaite’s Estate was insolvent and there was a preferential claim by the Special Commissioners of Income Tax which was not fully satisfied, so that the ordinary creditors received nothing. We, therefore, regret to inform you that there is no prospect of your account [...] or any part thereof being paid”.

Irish estate,

According to the schedule to the 1888 Montague mortgage (see W 2), the Ormathwaite estates included properties in Ballygroman, Classis, Coolaclarig, Fergus, Grange and Knockane, Co. Cork, and in Ballydubrig, Ballyhaurigan, Ballyrehan, Cloggercannon, Clonsillagh, Derirehand, Derrimlaught, Derrindaff, Derriorin, Forehan, Fullamore, Gortshannavor, Inchinagulleragh, Lessihane, Kiltean, Killaridd, Knockburrane and Pouldelly, Co. Kerry. The schedule includes the names of the tenants in 1858. Ormathwaite appears to have sold his estate at Ballygroman Lower, Fergus and Grange, all in the barony of Muskerry East, Co. Cork, in 1912, with some at least of the purchase money coming from the Land Purchase Aid Fund under the Irish Land Act 1903. The estate in Co. Kerry appears to have been sold in 1913, when Ormathwaite was credited by the Irish Land Commission with £38,743 2¾% stock and £896 3% stock. Some Irish stock had later to be sold, as it was considered an unauthorised holding by the (British) Public Trustee. A set of observations and answers to the Estate Duty Office of the (British) Inland Revenue, 1922, includes “it [the real estate in Ireland] has all been sold except a few unsaleable holdings value at say £150. All southern Ireland”, and an Irish Free State probate of Ormathwaite’s will (F 5/4) certifies that his estate in the Irish Free State amounted to £71.
