Three holograph letters from [Richard Jones Owen] ('Glaslyn'; 1831-1909), Penrhyndeudraeth, to his grand-daughter Elizabeth] Glaslyn Owen, Llanrwst, 1903-1907 (the teaching of Welsh in Secondary Schools, the recipient's studies, the recipient's marriage, personal); and manuscripts of John Owen ('Ap Glaslyn'; 1857-1934), including a holograph poem, 'Rhiangerdd Gwen o' r Ddol', which was awarded the prize at an eisteddfod at Llandudno, 1887, a scrap-book, 1882-1896 and undated, relating to eisteddfodau and literary and musical festivals, a certificate in elocution, 1885, and a certificate of ordination as Calvinistic Methodist minister, 1919.

A manuscript copy, in the hand of Abram Williams, Bad Uchaf, near Pontypridd, of an 'awdl' on 'Gwilym Hiraethog' by Evan Rees ('Dyfed') which was awarded the prize at the National Eisteddfod at Liverpool, 1884.

Two notebooks containing holograph 'cywyddau', 'englynion', 'hir a thoddeidiau', and 'caneuon' by Robert Williams ('Trebor Mai'). Almost the entire contents are included in 'Trebor Mai': Y Geninen (Llanrwst, 1869), and there are some marginal emendations and instructions to the compositor. Inset is an autograph letter, 1930, from John Ballinger, The National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, to J. T. Evans, Llanrwst, relating to the whereabouts of the two volumes and to the recipient's collection of items printed at Trefriw and Llanrwst.

A collection of holograph 'cerddi', 'carolau', 'emynau', 'penillion', and 'englynion', being an incomplete press copy of William Edwards ('Gwilym Padarn'): Eos Padarn (Llanrwst, 1829). The volume contains one poem not included in the printed work, namely 'Cerdd, Diolchgarwch i'r Cadpen Jones, a'r Dinas Llanwyndaf, am hen ddillad i Owen Williams, (Owen Llanddeiniolen) . . .'.

Transcripts [by Owen Evan(s) Jones, Llanrwst] of 'englynion' by his father John Jones ('Pyll Glan Conwy'); printed 'englynion' in memory of John Jones by [William Williams] ('Caledfryn'); printed copies and press cuttings of poetry in strict and free metres by 'Glasfryn' and 'Hirlas'; etc. The volume is lettered on the upper cover 'Englynion, 1874, June 30'. The titles of the 'englynion' include 'Beddargraff ar ol Y Parch. A 'poetical' exercise book of W. J. Roberts ('Gwilym Cowlyd') largely containing annotated transcripts of 'englynion' and other verses of the period 1820-1830 by Evan Evans ('Ieuan Glan Geirionydd'), William Jones ('Gwilym Cawrdaf'), Rowland Parry ('Ieuan Carn Dochan'), [William Williams] ('Gwilym Cyfeiliog'), Henry Griffith ('Hare Goch o Wynedd'), and Walter Davies ('Gwallter Mechain'). The collection is based on information received from Mary Richards ('Mair Risiart'), Darowen Vicarage, and contains copious extracts from 'Y Begeryn', being a manuscript in her possession containing impromptu verses by visiting poets, etc. The volume also contains transcripts of two letters, the one from J[ohn] Parry ['Bardd Alaw'] to the Reverend T[homas] Richards, Aberrhiw, 1822 (the success of Evan Evans ['Ieuan Glan Geirionydd'] as candidate for North Wales for a medal), and the other from Evan Evans ['Ieuan Glan Geirionydd'] to the Reverend T[homas] Richards, Caerwys [1816] (the recipient's promotion to the living of Caerwys, etc.); a list of books bought of the administrator of W[illiam] L[ewis] Walker [rector of Trefriw], 1863; and poetry by 'Gwilym Cowlyd' partly described as 'Y Ffetan Ysmaldod'.

A mutilated manuscript originally used as an account book, 1833 and undated, but largely containing drafts by (Lewis (or Llewelyn) Edwards] 'Llewelyn Twrog' of poetry (to Ruthin, etc.), observations on eisteddfod reform (with references to the proposed publication of Taliesin (1859) and to the forthcoming Ruthin eisteddfod), an essay on 'Danteithion', slab sales accounts, 1861 and undated, an essay on 'Addysg Deuluaidd', etc.

One hundred and thirty holograph letters and imperfect letters, 1845-1864 and undated, written by J[ohn] Jones ('Pyll Glan Conwy'), together with some additions by his wife [Jane Jones]. The majority of the letters are written to his son Evan, printer, Portmadoc, but a few are addressed to others of his children, namely Catherine, Edward, Jane, Owen E[van(s)], and Eliza[beth Margaret]. Among the topics discussed by the writer are printing processes and the purchase of equipment; printing estimates; publications by the writer and by his son Evan; news of relatives and friends; money matters, with copious references to negotiations for loans; an invitation to Dublin Exhibition (1853); the purchase of writing slates; travelling booksellers; the exchange of publications with other publishers; an address by Kossuth; a legal action against Evan Jones; the revival of the Rifle Corps at Llanrwst; a lecture on Garibaldi by W[illiam] Rees ['Gwilym Hiraethog']; the writer's decision to discontinue the publication of books; the writer's health; the writer's gardening and farming activities; the boy Hartwell [i.e., Griffith Hartwell Jones, rector of Nutfield, Surrey]; etc. Also included in the volume are a holograph letter from D. An album of annotated autographs, photographs and engravings, printed matter, press cuttings, etc., compiled during the years 1858-1881. The volume is almost entirely devoted to persons who were prominent in the literary and musical life of Wales during this period, and it appears from internal evidence to have been well known to the compiler's friends and contemporaries. The autographs are largely in the form of personal entries, recorded mainly at national and other eisteddfodau, but there are also a number of mounted holograph letters, 'cut-out' signatures from holograph letters, and franks. Thirteen exercise books, those numbered I-XII containing miscellaneous poetic and prose compositions (many in draft form), by, and in the hand of, Isaac Jones, Diserth, co. Flint [father of Thomas Gwynn Jones, professor of Welsh literature, University College of Wales, Aberystwyth]. The items include 'pryddestau' entitled 'Abel' (a draft and a more finished version, composed for competition at an eisteddfod at Blaenau Ffestiniog, 1891), 'Cartref', 'Y Nefoedd', and 'Naaman y Syriad' (draft) (composed for competition at eisteddfodau or literary festivals at Abergele, 1885, 1889, and 1890, respectively), and 'Y Croeshoeliad'; a draft of a romance in serial form called 'Teulu'r Groesffordd' (seven chapters completed, chapter 8 incomplete); a short story called 'Hywel Tudur yr Hendre'; a draft of the beginning of a novel to be called 'Teulu'r Hafod'; draft or final versions of short dissertations or essays on such topics as 'Geirwiredd' (for competition at an eisteddfod at Llanrwst, 1891), 'Cadwraeth y Sabbath yn ei berthynas a llwyddiant tymhorol' (incomplete), 'Y Ddeddf air Efengyl', 'Y Tair Gardd' (1922), 'Peryglon y Swydd i Ysbryd y Blaenor' (headed by a pencilled note, in another hand, reading 'Papyr a ddarllenwyd yn Nghymdeithasfa Caerlleon, gan Isaac Jones, Dyserth'), and 'Gwyrthiau'; an incomplete copy of a letter referring to tithe legislation, addressed to the editor of Y Faner; and other incomplete fragments. Richard Owen, gyda Chynyrchion Buddugol Ereill, gan Gwynvre ap Iwan a Gwilym Meredydd (Wyddgrug, 1891)]. This is probably the actual holograph copy of the poem, which, under the pseudonym 'Deigryn Hiraeth', T. Gwynn Jones submitted for competition at a literary festival held at Abergele, Christmas 1888. Included with the note-books are a holograph note from Mrs. S[arah] E[lin] Jones, sister of T. Gwynn Jones, undated, a holograph letter from Owen Jones, husband of the said Mrs. S. E. Jones, Diserth, [19]53, and a letter from the said Owen and S. E. Jones, Dyserth, [19]53, [all three to D. Gwenallt Jones, University College of Wales, Aberystwyth], and all relating to the note-books, which were being forwarded to the recipient. Included also are typescript notes compiled by, and bearing the initials of, A[rthur] ap G[wynn] [son of T. Gwynn Jones], listing, and commenting on, the contents of each individual note-book.

Many of these poems and essays were composed for submission in competitions at local eisteddfodau or literary meetings. Other items include adjudications on 'telynegion' submitted for competition at a literary meeting held at Dyserth, February 1920, and in an essay competition for an essay on 'Taith Israel o'r Aipht hyd Sinai'; a copy of an announcement of a literary and musical meeting to be held at the Calvinistic Methodist chapel, Llysfaen, 2 November 1876; a report on Sunday schools [held in connection with Calvinistic Methodist churches] in the Denbigh district (n.d.); a list of preachers who preached ? in the Calvinistic Methodist chapel, Dyserth, 1917-1922; a list of preaching engagements, ? undertaken by Isaac Jones, 1893-1925, with the texts preached upon; sermon notes; and accounts, 1876-1877,? of the Calvinistic Methodist Church, Colwyn.

A volume containing transcripts of Welsh verse in strict metre (consisting mainly of 'cywyddau') transcribed, October [18]89 - February [18]90, by I[saac] F[oulkes] [newspaper proprietor and publisher]. Many of the poems are annotated to indicate that they were copied out of a volume in the possession of 'W.J.' of Llangollen, and the whole work appears to be an incomplete transcript of NLW MS 670D, which itself consists of a collection of Welsh poems transcribed by William Jones ('Bleddyn'), antiquary, local historian, etc., of Llangollen. The poets whose work is represented include Gwerfil Mechain, Howel Dafi alias Hywel ap Dafydd ap Ieuan ap Rys (Bardd Raglan), Sion ap Phelppot, Robert ap Dafydd Llwyd, Iorwerth Fynglwyd, Dafydd Llwyd ap Llywelyn ap Gruffydd (o Fathafarn), John ap Howel ap Tudur, Huw Cae Llwyd, Lewys Daron, Bedo Brwynllys, ? A note on p. 123 indicates that three 'englynion' by [Thomas Edwards] 'Twm o'r Nant', which were to be found at this point in W[illiam] J[ones]'s volume [NLW MS 670D], had not been copied by the transcriber, as he intended including them in a proposed new edition of that poet's works, to be published by him in 1889. A second note on the same page indicates that, similarly, fourteen 'cywyddau' by Tudur Aled had not been transcribed in the present volume, but had been copied into another book, with the intention of publishing these and other poems by the same bard, together with poems by Guto'r Glyn and Sion Tudur. In fact, fourteen 'cywyddau' and four other poems by Tudur Aled, and all of the poems by Guto'r Glyn and Sion Tudur, which appear in NLW MS 670D, have been omitted from the present volume, the presence of poems by the two latter bards in NLW MS 670D being usually indicated by the transcriber by quoting the title, or title and first line, of such works. A note on p. 153 states that eighty ' cywyddau' by Dafydd ap Gwilym [which appeared in William Jones's book, i.e ., NLW MS 670D, pp. 149-263], had been used to correct the published edition of that poet's work ('Yma daw LXXX Cywydd o waith Dafydd ab Gwilym, y rhai a ddefnyddiwyd i gywiro ei waith argraffedig'). These eighty poems, and also five retaliatory poems composed by Gruffydd Grug, in a poetic contention with Dafydd ap Gwilym, and found interspersed among the eighty 'cywyddau', have been omitted from the present volume. A further note on p. 264 states that the last three 'cywyddau' [in NLW MS 670D] had not been copied, as the transcriber believed the text to be so corrupt, that they did not merit transcription. A fly-leaf is marked 'Bk i', and this possibly connects the volume with NLW MS 19313, which, marked on a fly-leaf 'Bk ii', consists of a similar volume of Welsh verse transcribed, March - April [18]90, by I[saac] F[oulkes], again, by inference, from a book in the possession of W[illiam] J[ones].

Two ? holograph poems, the first, by Ellis Parry, Pont Saint, entitled 'Penillion A gyfansoddwyd ar fyddygoliaeth R. D. Williams, Esqr., Cyfreithiwr dros bysgodwyr Menai, yn erbyn J. Russel', and the second described as 'Gwaith Ellis ap Hywel yn rhoddi darlyniad ohono ei hun'.
