Gwaith Robin Ddu Ddewin,

Two notebooks, bound as one, containing transcripts by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') of 'cywyddau', etc. by Robin Ddu and of 'Cywydd Marwnad Robin Ddu' by Ieuan Môn. There are also some press cuttings containing material relating to both Robin Ddu and Robert Parry ('Robin Ddu Eryri'). Loose papers consist of a note on [John Mortimer (d. 1736)] and an envelope addressed to 'Myrddin Fardd, At:- Mrs. Prices, The Fairs, St. Michael's Hamlet, Liverpool' containing a note on Ellias Morys, Llwyndyrys and William Elias the poet headed 'Mrs. Pierce, The Friars, St. Michael's Hamlet, Liverpool', with an 'englyn' by Owain Lleyn on the reverse side (in pencil).

Mannoethwy,

A notebook labelled 'Mannoethwy' containing a few miscellaneous press cuttings followed by material relating to Owen Jones ('Manoethwy'; 1838-66), brother of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'), including a biographical account described as being 'Allan O'r Geiriadur Bywgraffyddol, gan y Parch. O[wen] J[ones] Llandudno' and 'englynion' by Ellis Owen, Cefnymeusydd and J. H. Griffith, Gorseddau, ger Tremadog (press cutting). The hand is probably that of 'Myrddin Fardd'.

A volume put together by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') containing miscellaneous press cuttings, extracts from Peniarth MS [124] and 'Eglurhad ar eiriau tywyll yn ngwaith rhai Beirdd' (largely crossed out), etc.

Translations of articles from Archaeologia Cambrensis,

A notebook containing translations into Welsh of articles and notes largely of Llŷn interest from Archaeologia Cambrensis, Vols. I-IV, 1846-9 (not in the autograph of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'), except for the references to Archaeologia Cambrensis.) There are also some loose papers, including a translation in the autograph of R. P. Morris of a note on Bodwrda, Aberdaron [Archaeologia Cambrensis, 1849, p. 208] sent to 'Myrddin Fardd', and translations in another hand of notes on inscribed stones at Llannor and Cefnamwlch [Archaeologia Cambrensis, 1847, p. 201, and 1859, p. 53].

Pedigrees, etc.,

A composite volume compiled by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') containing press cuttings, pedigrees (transcribed in part from manuscripts of Owen Griffith, Llanystumdwy, Ebenezer Thomas, ('Eben Fardd') and Ellis Owen, Pant Phylip, Llangelynin), and miscellaneous papers, including pedigrees in various hands and letters, some pasted in or inset, others loose. The correspondents include Owen Evans, Broom Hall, 1875, R. O. Williams, Bangor, 1846 (copy), Edw. H. Owen, Ty Coch, [18]93 and 1896, and Jno. E. Griffith, Bangor, [19]10. There is material, chiefly press cuttings, concerning Richard Lloyd Edwards, Nanhoron, Rowland Jones, Broom Hall (also known as Rowland Jones, Weirglodd Fawr) and his father, Rowland Jones the philologist, Sir Love Jones Parry, Madryn, and others. One or two items in the volume appear to be in the autograph of Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd') and the loose papers include a pedigree of Ucheldref, Gwyddelwern in an early eighteenth century hand (damaged). Another pedigree headed 'Llannerch fawr' is dated 'Machynlleth Feb. 1861' and is connected with the Reverend John Evans (1815-91), afterwards archdeacon of Merioneth (?transcript), and the volume also contains one or two notes in the autograph of Jonathan Jones, Caernarvon. Letter 'U' on spine.

Pedigrees,

Pedigrees (54 pp.) of various families in Caernarvonshire (Llŷn and Eifionydd), Montgomery, Merioneth, Denbigh and Anglesey, etc. transcribed by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') from an unnamed source or sources, possibly early eighteenth century. The first page is marked 'Copy No. 28'. A loose press cutting in the volume contains a carol ('Carol Newydd') by [Gruffydd Roberts] 'Gyttyn Lleyn'.

Peisarfau ac amrywiol,

A composite volume belonging to John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') containing notes and press cuttings concerning heraldry, etc. At the beginning in another hand are accounts of 'Gibbet Hill' [Llanfair Caereinion] subscribed 'Mrs B- December 12. 59', 'Sion y Clochydd' and 'Bryn Llawenydd'. The press cuttings include a series of articles on 'Pymtheg Llwyth Gwynedd' by [the Reverend Hugh Parry] 'Cefni'. There are one or two loose items, including a sheet in an eighteenth century hand containing 'Naw gradd Carrennydd' and two 'englynion', etc., 'Awgrym fûd' (a deaf and dumb alphabet), and 'Llyma y pum achos sydd i gadw acha[u].'

Notes on churches, etc.,

A scrap-book belonging to John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') containing notes and press cuttings relating to churches and parishes, etc. in Llŷn and Eifionydd, Caernarvonshire, with a few references to places outside that area, e.g. Abergwili, Carmarthenshire and Brongwyn, Cardiganshire. At the reverse end are copies of memorial inscriptions, a note on 'Ffordd Maughan', transcripts of two letters, 1860, from [Ebenezer Thomas], 'Eben Vardd', Clynnog to Mr John Roberts [?Sion Lleyn], and brief notes on mansions in Llŷn and Eifionydd, etc. Letter (?) 'I' on spine.

A notebook containing a short account of J[ohn] W[illiam] Thomas ('Arfonwyson; 1805-40) in the autograph of John Jones, ('Myrddin Fardd').

Llenorion Sir Gaernarfon. Cyf. II,

A scrap-book containing material largely of Caernarvonshire interest (biographical notes, press cuttings, extracts from almanacs, copies of memorial inscriptions, etc.) compiled by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'). There is a rough list of contents at the beginning but this is not exhaustive and the pages are not numbered. Inset are two letters, one incomplete, 1920-1, from Ifan ab Owen Edwards, Llanuwchllyn to 'Myrddin Fardd'.

Miscellanea,

A notebook containing extracts transcribed by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') from S[imon] T[homas], Hanes y Byd a'r Amseroedd (Llundain, 1721), followed by press cuttings on the subject of plagiarism, etc., with references to a controversy which arose at Eisteddfod Gadeiriol Môn, Porthaethwy (Menai Bridge) in 1873. Individuals mentioned in the cuttings include [John Owen Griffith] 'Ioan Arfon' and [John James Hughes] 'Alfardd'.

Hen Benillion,

Two copies, the second incomplete, of a collection of 'Hen Benillion' compiled probably by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'). The first copy (not in the autograph of' Myrddin Fardd' except for some alterations and additions) appears to be part (pp. 494-573) of a larger work and is headed "Pen. XIV - Crynodeb o Hen Bennillion Gwerinol' (the word 'diardd[el]' has been added to the title at a later date). The second copy is in the autograph of 'Myrddin Fardd' and is earlier in date but the beginning and end are wanting and the section here (pp. 29-72) corresponds to pp. 523-566 in the other copy. Between these two copies is a printed article by E. Anwyl, Oxford on 'Penillion telyn y Cymry' [Y Geninen, 1891], pp. 251-4.

A composite volume containing lists of Welsh words and their meanings, some in the autograph of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'), others from printed sources; notes in the autograph of R. Prys Morris, including references to a number of 'cywyddau', etc. by Edmwnd Prys in BM Add MSS and a few extracts from [Joseph] Besse, A collection of the sufferings of the people called Quakers (London, 1753); part of a letter from the Reverend Evan Evans [? Llansadwrn Rectory, Anglesey] to 'Myrddin Fardd'; and transcripts in the autograph of 'Myrddin Fardd' and others of poetry by Rowland Jones, Richard Hughes, Cefn Llanfair, Cadwaladr Cesail, Thomas Williams ('Twm Pedrog'), Morys Dwyfech, Huw Arwystl, [ ] 'Gutto o Leyn' (d. 1867) (beginning wanting) and [Evan Pritchard] 'Ieuan Lleyn', some printed in J. A list of subscribers to a proposed biographical dictionary by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') entitled Enwogion Llŷn [see Cwrtmawr MS 559]. The names are partly autograph and partly in the hand of 'Myrddin Fardd'.
