Bessie & Billie

Material relating to Bessie & Billie, a play in words and music performed by Joanne Bell and Cynthia Utterbach as part of Black History Month. The play, which re-enacted the lives and work of legendary jazz/blues singers Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday through the medium of dialogue and music, was first conceived as an improvised performance by Joanne Bell and Cynthia Utterbach in a Hamburg swing club. The parts of Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday were taken respectively by Bell and Utterbach.

Fisk Project 2000

Integrated Performing Arts Open Air Summer Festivals, Port Tennant, Swansea

Material relating to the 1996, 1997 and 1998 Integrated Performing Arts Open Air Summer Festivals, held at Port Tennant, Swansea, and to other summer festivals held at Port Tennant in 1997 and 1998. Co-ordinated by Jen Wilson, the events offered performance space for people with disabilities and special needs as well as the able-bodied.

Cultural exchange tour: West Virginia/Wales

Material relating to tours of venues in West Virginia made by a combined Welsh and West Virginian musical ensemble called Jen Wilson And Her New Friends, focusing in particular on the Historic Fayette Theatre in Fayetteville, West Virginia; together with material relating to tours of Wales and the Welsh valleys of Coal Camp Memories, an original one-woman production by the American storyteller, actor and writer Karen Vuranch. The material includes copious correspondence, largely between Jen Wilson and Karen Vuranch; funding applications; projected expenses; press release; concert flyers; performance schedules; material relating to Karen Vuranch and Coal Camp Memories; itinerary of the 2001 Wales tour and tour report; press cuttings, including those relating to a West Virginia tour by Swansea musical duo The Amigos; airline tickets and travel information; and an academic essay, 1994, by Karen Vuranch titled The Influence of the Welsh Immigrants on the Development of the Coal Fields.

Year of Literature 1995

Material relating to events surrounding 1995's Year of Literature and in particular the involvement of Women in Jazz , including proposals, aims and objectives and mission statement; funding applications and responses; press release; correspondence; and press cuttings. Jen Wilson was appointed a member of the 1995 Year of Literature General Advisory Group. Together with material relating to double bassist Paula Gardiner, pianist Stan Tracey and trumpeter Cris Haines, who were each commissioned by Swansea University's Department of Adult Continuing Education to compose new works to celebrate the Year of Literature.

Although this was a British-wide celebration of literature and the arts, Swansea's successful bid to host the Arts Council's Year of Literature in 1995 meant that the majority of events were held in and around that city.
