The play, which re-enacted the lives and work of legendary jazz/blues singers Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday through the medium of dialogue and music, was first conceived as an improvised performance by Joanne Bell and Cynthia Utterbach in a Hamburg swing club. The parts of Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday were taken respectively by Bell and Utterbach.
