A typescript draft of Part 1 (with index, NLW MS 21717iiD) of Arthur V. Mellefont, Malenfant Families (Killarney Vale, NSW, 1983), a study in three parts dealing with the Welsh, Irish and Australian branches of the family. Part 1 deals with the Welsh branch of the Maliphant/Malenfant family.

A group of letters, largely relating to genealogy, heraldry, etc., which include: from Richard Llwyd ('Bard of Snowdon') to Sir William Betham, Herald's College, Dublin, 1814; Robert Roberts, Holyhead to Sir Joshua Meredyth, Dublin, 1814; and W. W. E. Wynne of Peniarth to an unnamed recipient, 1828. The pedigrees mentioned include those of the Powell family of Stanage Park, Radnorshire and of W. W. E. Wynne, Peniarth.

A volume [in the hand of Sir Samuel Rush Meyrick], the first part of which ( pp. 1-322) consists of an incomplete, heraldic dictionary, purporting to contain descriptions of 'The Arms of the gentry of Wales, and some others of the English gentry who match'd in Wales, alphabetically layd down'. Some of the descriptions are illustrated with pencil sketches of armorial shields, and a few of these have been coloured. A holograph note by S. R. Meyrick, on a fly-leaf at the beginning of the volume, reads 'The following Manuscript was copied from another, written about the latter end of the 16th, or beginning of the 17th century; and is an authentic heraldic compilation. The coats of Arms were not added to the original'. The second part of the volume (pp. 323- ) appears to have been intended as a biographical dictionary of the persons and families included in the first part ('Annotations on the foregoing heraldic Manuscript'). An incomplete list (A-L) of the said families and persons was compiled, but only in a comparatively few instances have notes been added.

A volume of heraldic and genealogical material in the hand of Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg'). P. xvii, which appears to be a 'title-page' to the section containing pp. 1- 84, is inscribed 'Achau ac Arfau Prif Fonedd y Cymry. Dadyscrif o Lyfr Du Pant Lliwydd Eiddo'r diweddar Mr. Thomas Truman, 1806' (see also the note on p. xix dated 7 October 1806 and addressed to the reader by [Edward Williams] 'Iolo Morganwg'). Pp. 1-61 contain a transcript of the genealogical and heraldic material to be found in pp. 73-204 of the aforementioned manuscript generally known as 'Llyfr Du Pantlliwydd' (now N.LW MS 13165), whilst pp. 62-84 contain a transcript of similar material to be found in pp. 13-72 of the same manuscript (i.e. N.L.W. MS. 13165B). Pp. 103-08 and 113-54 appear to contain a transcript of pp. 1-74 of the aforementioned 'Llyfr Du Pantlliwydd' with additions and / or variations. The remainder of the volume contains miscellaneous historical, genealogical, and heraldic material, etc., including sections with the following superscriptions or incipits - 'Llyma Bymthegllwyth Gwynedd' (pp. 155-7, ? extracted from NLW MS 13165B, pp. 142-5); 'Llyma son am natur a rhinweddau y meini gwerthfawr fal ai dangoswyd gan yr Ednywed ab Ednyw yn Llys Gruffudd ap Cynan . . . ac y fal ai dangoswyd gan y brawd leuan Goch ab Ithel hir gar bron y Brenin Edward yng Nghonwy' (pp. 161-4, allegedly 'O Lyfr Mr. Cob o Gaerdydd'); 'Llyma draethu am fonedd ag anfonedd . . .' (pp. 165-71, allegedly 'O Lyfr Thomas Hopkin o Langrallo'); 'Ach Bleddyn ap Cynfyn' (p. 180); '[Extracts] From a MS. A volume of extracts by Alcwyn C. Evans, largely relating to Welsh families, from Burke's Extinct and Dormant Baronetcies. Inset is a transcript, with notes, in another hand, of arms on a chimney-piece in the old part of Werrington House, Devon.

A volume compiled, c. 1846-1874, by Robert Chambre Vaughan, Burlton Hall, co. Salop [see DWB under Wynn (aft. Nanney, etc.) family of Maesyneuadd, Llandecwyn], containing pedigrees of families from whom he claimed descent, mostly Welsh or co. Salop, in particular those of Chambre of Burlton and Petton, and Vaughan of Burlton. Pasted or tipped into the volume are additional biographical, genealogical and heraldic documents and memoranda, mid-seventeenth cent.-1874, drawn from diverse manuscript and printed soruces, including certificates of baptism, marriage and burial and copies of monumental inscriptions, over a hundred emblazoned coats of arms, and letters, 1846-52, to Robert Chambre Vaughan, together with a list of sources and an index to the pedigrees (ff. 63-4).

A manuscript containing transcripts by Angharad Llwyd (1780-1866) of pedigrees of Welsh and English families, of Denbighshire parish registers, and of various memoranda, manuscripts, etc.; material relating to Salusbury property, 1712; the original manuscript of an elegiac cywydd to Evan Lloyd Vaughan (d. 1791), Cors y Gedol, by John Richard of Llanfair near Harlech; a poem by Jonathan Hughes (1721-1805); a poem in Latin written to a member of the Mostyn family; a letter, 1620, from Sir Roger Mostyn (1673-1734) to Sir Peter Mutton, Llewenni and to Robert Davies, 1665; letters to Angharad Llwyd; etc.

Two volumes containing printed accounts of baronetcies created between 1611 and 1768 with cuttings of coats of arms pasted in the margins. The accounts are arranged in the chronological order of creation and there is a manuscript index of names in each volume.

A transcript of Hugh Thomas's collection of pedigrees of Welsh families contained in British Museum Harleian MS 2288, with reproductions in colour of the coats of arms, an index to the pedigrees and an index to the coats of arms.

A transcript by Benjamin Jones, Caernarfon of 'Llyfr Achau ac Arfbeisiau y 5 Llwyth Breninol a 15 Llwyth Pendefigol Gwynedd ...' by Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd').

A composite manuscript of loose papers and fragments of manuscript volumes. It contains poetry and prose, mostly in Welsh, much of the poetry being addressed to the Owen family of Brogyntyn and Clenennau and other related families. Apart from a late-sixteenth century awdl by Wiliam Llŷn (ff. 57-58), the other items all belong between the first half of the seventeenth century and the first half of the eighteenth century.
Fragments apparently once part of books, some of which perhaps were never bound, are: a narrow folio of cywyddau and englynion by Mathew Owen, in the hand of Nathanael Jones (ff. 20-26), written not before 1656 (see ff. 24 verso-25), with autograph englynion added by Harri Howel (f. 20 verso) and by Nathanael Jones (f. 20 verso, 23); a folio manuscript containing cywyddau to Lewis Anwyl of Parc and his family, dated 1627-1636 (ff. 38-55), written by two good hands of the first half of the seventeenth century, one responsible for ff. 38-50 verso, the other ff. 51-55; a quarto manuscript with transcripts of poetry of the Gogynfeirdd (ff. 113-122; paginated 1-20), by a seventeenth-century hand similar to that of Morris Evans (cf. ff. 93-94, 123-141); pedigrees of Welsh royal lines, the Maurices of Clenennau, etc., in English (ff. 123-141; original foliation 1-12 survives), in the hand of Morris Evans (ff. 123-127 verso, 129-134 verso) and a second hand (ff. 128 recto-verso, 135-141); a narrow folio of canu brud attributed to Myrddin, Taliesin, etc. (ff. 178-186), written by Nathanael Jones, not before 1651 (ff. 182 verso, 183 verso 'aetatis suae a 21o Feb: 1650 27'); a folio manuscript of canu brud, mainly cywyddau, by Dafydd Llwyd and others (ff. 189-207), in a poor hand of the mid seventeenth century, probably that of Thomas Edwards to judge by pentrials on f. 196 verso, who refers to Tregeiriog (f. 199 verso) and 'Llanfylling fairings' (f. 207 verso); an octavo manuscript containing poems by Robin Clidro, etc., in a seventeenth or eighteenth century hand (ff. 210-219); and a folio manuscript of autograph cywyddau and englynion by Huw Morys, some addressed to William Owen and Sir Robert Owen (ff. 222-226 verso). Poetry written on loose papers includes autograph poems by Huw Morys (ff. 12-18), John Owens (ff. 59-71; f. 69 recto-verso may be his italic hand), Harri Howel (ff. 75-76 verso, 90 recto-verso), Owen Gruffydd (ff. 84-89, 230-231), William Phylip (ff. 97-98 verso), John Morgan, later vicar of Conwy (f. 101 recto-verso, the poem incomplete and anonymous, dated 1688, the hand his), Siôn Rhydderch, 1732 (ff. 104-105, 227-228), and Edward Lloyd, Brewis (f. 221 recto-verso). There are probable autograph poems by Edward Rowlant (ff. 72-74 verso, 79-80) and John Richard (f. 81), and possible autograph poems by 'J. Ll.' (f. 26 verso), Mathew Owen (ff. 77-78, 232 recto-verso), Siôn Roberts (ff. 91-92), Huw Cadwaladr (ff. 106-108) and 'R.C.' (f. 163). Other poetry is in the hands of Morris Evans (ff. 93-94) and 'Theo: Ro:' (ff. 152-154 verso). Also included is a letter, 1652, from the antiquary Meredith Lloyd to Thomas Vaughan, the alchemist and poet (ff. 1-3 verso), followed by a copy of Hanes Taliesin (ff. 5-10 verso). The 'Cywydd Marwnad i Mr William Owen o Borkynton' by Huw Morys, beginning 'Mae gwaedd oer lem Gweddw [yw'r wlad]', discussed in E. D. Jones, 'The Brogyntyn Welsh Manuscripts', National Library of Wales Journal, 7 (1951-2), 165-198 (pp. 186-189, 196-197), has not been found.

Welsh manuscript containing a chronicle of the reign, 1422-1461, of Henry VI (1421-1471) and a list of Welsh poets and crythorion; an elegy by Katherine Philips (The Matchless Orinda) (1631-1666) on the death of Mary Lloyd, Bodidris, Denbighshire, 1656; a copy by W. W. E. Wynne (1801-1880) of a cywydd by Owen Gruffydd (c. 1643-1730); a letter to Angharad Llwyd; etc.

A letter, dated 10-11 July 1967, from the artist and writer David Jones, Harrow, to the novelist [Anthony] Powell, mainly discussing Welsh genealogy and history. Jones also refers to the anniversary of his involvement in the battle of Mametz Wood, 10-11 July 1916, the subject of part 7 of his poem In Parenthesis (London, 1937) (f. 16 verso).
The letter contains references to the recent 'David Jones Special Issue' of Agenda, 5.1-3 (Spring-Summer 1967), Powell's television producer and director son Tristram, with whom Jones was acquainted, Kenneth Jackson, Saunders Lewis, and Jones's knowledge of Welsh (all f. 16), and the Eliseg Pillar inscription (f. 16 recto-verso).

Pedigree and achievement, 1584, of Gawen Goodman of Ruthin, compiled by Simwnt Fychan and drawn by Richard Thomlyns of Denbigh, with eighty-eight other coats of arms, nearly all fully painted.
The pedigree shows Goodman's descent, through the female line, from twenty-five prominent ancestors, mostly Welsh, represented by twenty-five shields in two rows at the top of the pedigree; the arms of royal houses are surmounted by gold crowns. The remaining sixty-three coats of arms, the majority of which are impaled, are scattered throughout the pedigree. Personal names are enclosed in roundels. The pedigree includes Gawen's younger brother Gabriel (Dean of Westminster, 1561-1601) and other siblings, as well as Gawen's children and those of his other brother Godfrey. The achievement is placed at the lower right-hand base.

Manuscripts, [late 12 cent.]-[early 20 cent.], formerly part of the library of the Mostyn family of Mostyn Hall, Flintshire, comprising transcripts and extracts from Giraldus Cambrensis, Geoffrey of Monmouth, Dares Phrygius, Nennius, Gildas, David Jenkins (Judge Jenkins), Sir John Wynn of Gwydir, Lydgate's 'Life of Our Lady', Leland's Itinerary, 'Chroniques de France', historical manuscripts such as Brut y Tywysiogion and Brut y Brenhinoedd, Welsh romances and the Mabinogion; collections of mainly Welsh poetry, among them the seventeenth-century volumes Llyfr Coch Nannau and Llyfr Gwyn Corsygedol, containing poems by Dafydd ap Gwilym, Guto'r Glyn, Tudur Aled, Siôn Cent and others; genealogies, pedigrees and histories; official papers relating to Caernarvonshire; catalogues of the Mostyn and Gloddaeth libraries, 1692-1842; etc.

Pedigree and achievement, 1591, of Francis Vaughan (Vychan or Vichan, d. 1597), of [Sutton-upon-Derwent], Yorkshire, compiled by Thomas Jones (Twm Siôn Cati) of Fountain Gate, Cardiganshire, and probably executed by Richard Adams 'paynter of Ludlow' (c.f. NLW Roll 226), with fifty-three fully painted coats of arms, mostly impaled and many quartered.
The pedigree is traced from 'Kradog Vraychvras, Earle off Herefourde', 'Iustyn ap Gurgan, K[ing] of Glamorgan & Morganog', 'Ryes Tewder [Rhys ap Tewdwr], King off Southwales', 'Griffith ap Kynan, King off Northwales', and 'Bleddyn ap Kynvin, Prynce off Powys', as well as from Edward I. Additional information is enclosed in twelve cartouches, mostly scattered throughout the top third of the pedigree, with one each in the bottom corners. The pedigree most closely resembles 'Style 1' in Michael Powell Siddons, Welsh Pedigree Rolls (Aberystwyth, 1996), p. 11. Vaughan's grandfather was Thomas Vaughan of Porthaml, Talgarth, Breconshire; the family's association with Yorkshire began only with Francis's father, John, who settled there early in the reign of Elizabeth I. Francis Vaughan was chief steward of crown lands in the East Riding from 1580, High Sheriff of Yorkshire, 1594-95, and was killed in Ulster, in service to the crown, in July 1597.
