Four volumes, [1872x1877], containing notes on Welsh phonology, vowels, and words derived from Latin, possibly compiled by John Rhŷs in preparation for his lectures on Welsh philology. The book on Welsh phonology includes notes in Myvanwy Rhys's hand.

Notebooks, [1887]-1902, mostly comprising lists, compiled by John Rhŷs, of nouns, personal names and place names, included in manuscripts, glosses and codices, with related notes.

Forty three notebooks, 1873-1915, the majority of which are numbered and labelled with a list of contents, recording inscribed stones examined by John Rhŷs mostly in Wales, the Isle of Man, Scotland, and Ireland. They contain descriptions of his journeys, of stones and inscriptions, folklore and other related notes. Also included are unbound diaries of 'ogham hunts', 1883-1899.

Various notebooks, [1855x1915], most of which appear to have belonged to John Rhŷs and are written in his hand; some appear to be school books and lecture notes. They mainly relate to philology, including lists of words, names in pedigrees, and notes on manuscripts and inscriptions. Several books also record folklore and legends.

Engagement diaries, 1862-1915 (with gaps), belonging to John Rhŷs, together with a journal of a visit to St Jean de Luz, 1893-1894. Most contain brief, often occasional, entries recording meetings, tours, domestic and personal matters, accounts, and other notes and observations. Also included are accounts, exemplars of German phrases, lists of various places visited probably in his capacity as HM Inspector of Schools, and inscriptions of stones.

Papers, 1878-1916, relating to Oxford University and, in particular, Jesus College, including a book of visitors to the Principal's lodgings, 1897-1916; a register of students attending John Rhŷs's lectures each term, 1878-1915; cuttings and reports relating to the Meyrick Fund, 1889-1896; letters, 1897-1905, relating to the sinecure rectory of Clynnog Fawr annexed to the headship of Jesus College; and papers, 1909, relating to the unveiling of a memorial tablet to J. R. Green.
