Twenty-six letters and cards, 1961-1969, from Brenda Chamberlain to Alan Clodd of Enitharmon Press, relating mainly to the publication of her Poems with Drawings (1969) and Alun Lewis and the Making of the Caseg Broadsheets (1969). Also included are a few sketches, poems and photographs, 1936-1969, presented by Chamberlain to Clodd.

Miscellaneous items of prose comprising: typescript with autograph revision of the prose pieces published in Life and Letters Today, May 1945, under the title 'From a Journal', together with other related pieces, including on f. 2 a poem (ff. 1-12); typescript of an article, 'Prehistoric painting in the cave of Lascaux' (ff. 13-21) and related notes (ff. 22-26); a typescript account of being in hospital apparently intended for Mabon (see f. 27) but never published, [?1970] (ff. 27-34), with three earlier drafts of the same (ff. 35-49); transcript of a discussion with Brenda Chamberlain on the BBC of an exhibition of her paintings at Bangor in 1968 (ff. 50-54); typescript note by Brenda Chamberlain on her painting and writing under the title 'The relationship between art and literature' (ff. 55-58); typescript of a piece of prose with the title 'In Holstein I long for the Midi' (ff. 59-61); and fragments of prose relating to Bardsey Island (ff. 62-68).

Notebook containing pencil and pen-and-ink sketches, poems, Bardsey material, lists of Brenda Chamberlain's paintings (ff. 42-93 verso, 108 verso-109), household recipes and notes, etc. Dated 'London June 1958' (f. 1) and used 1958-1961.

Notebook containing pen-and ink sketches, some with colour, Bardsey material, a children's story (ff. 29-42), notes on an exhibition of paintings from the collection of the Misses Davies, Gregynog (ff. 97-102), Greek material including sketches of a dancer (cf. MS 40, now part of NLW MS 21520B) (from f. 103). Dated 'Oberbehme Juni 1958' (f. 1) and used apparently 1958-1961 and 1964.

Pen-and-ink sketches

Exercise book containing pen-and-ink sketches, apparently made in Germany, some prose, and photographs of medieval wood-carving from the Klosterkirche, Cismar.

Photographs of paintings

A volume containing photographs of paintings by Brenda Chamberlain, 1934-1965, with notes by her on where they were exhibited, by whom purchased, whether painted out or known later whereabouts.

Poems

Typescript drafts, [1941x1942], of six poems by Brenda Chamberlain, sent by her to Alun Lewis. Two of the poems, 'Would it not move to pity ...' and 'Dead Ponies', were published in The Dublin Magazine, 16 (July-September 1941), pp. 7-10; the others are apparently unpublished.

Sketchbooks

Sketchbooks of Brenda Chamberlain comprising: leaves from three sketch pads containing Greek material including drafts of poems, sketches and 'automatic drawings', [1964] (MS 39; 37 ff.); a sketchbook, [Summer 1964], containing some Greek material in prose and ballpoint sketches, notably of a dancer (Rovertos Saragas) dancing, with a note on these particular sketches on ff. 41-45 (MS 40; 64 ff.); three notebooks containing 'automatic drawings' in ballpoint, drawn while listening to the music of Halim El-Dabh, played by the composer, in Ydra. and Athens, October 1964 (MS 41; 117 ff.); and Xerox copies of the three notebooks in MS 41 with a few explanatory notes by Chamberlain, together with two drafts of a letter written by Chamberlain to Isabel Hitchman of the Welsh Arts Council (cf. NLW MS 21524E) explaining the drawings (MS 42; 121 ff.).

The Boy and the Simnel Cake

Successive versions of 'The Boy and the Simnel Cake', a story for children, apparently unpublished.
They comprise a typescript of earliest version, entitled 'The Magic Comb', [1940x1959] (ff. 1-9); part of an autograph revision, [?1960s] (ff. 10-14); typescript of revised version (ff. 15-22); typescript of later revised version (ff. 23-31); and water-colour illustrations, probably contemporary with the earliest version, the largest being c. 400 x 250 mm. (ff. 32-49).

The Monument: drafts

Drafts of a play entitled 'The Monument', all apparently incomplete. The central character appears to be based on Theodorakis, the Greek composer. The situation is that in Greece in 1968 and after; the work must date from this period.
They comprise: a typescript draft (ff. 1-34); a later typescript draft (ff. 35-73); and disordered fragments of earlier drafts than the preceding, typescript and autograph (ff. 74-110).
