Jones (1), 1875; Eluned Morgan (1), 1904; Thomas Francis Roberts (1), 1895; and Sir Osmond Williams (4), 1907-1910.

Copies and transcripts of letters by W. Llewelyn Williams to various correspondents, 1894-1922, accumulated by Neville C. Masterman, [1970]-[2005]. The file includes letters to his brother, Thomas Williams, John Morris Jones, T. E. Ellis and T. Huws Davies, concerning both personal and professional matters. Some of the Welsh letters have been translated into English. Originals of most of the letters are held at NLW, and in such cases the NLW call numbers of the original letters have been noted on the copies.

E. Ellis, M.P. for Meirionethshire and Liberal Chief Whip. The file also includes the booklet 'Ballads of Wales', 1919, given as a gift to his nephew, D. Morgan Evans.

Lord Rosebery [Archibald Philip Primrose, 5th earl]: Robert Burns ... (Edinburgh, 1896), being a vellum-bound presentation copy by the author to D. R. Daniel (marked 'For the sake of Tom Ellis ...'), and a covering letter from 'Tom' [Thomas E. Ellis] to David [R. Daniel] which is bound in the volume.

An album compiled by John Lloyd James ('Clwydwenfro'), Congregational minister at March, Cambridgeshire, etc. The volume is almost wholly of Congregational interest, and relates for the most part to Glandwr Church, Pembrokeshire, and to the activities of John Davies ('Siôn Gymro' otherwise 'Siôn Llethi' otherwise 'Ioan Llethi'), who was ordained minister of the church in 1827. Some fifty letters, 1875-1889, to Elias Hughes, Colwyn Bay, co. Denbigh. Many are replies to invitations to preach at Engedi Calvinistic Methodist church, Colwyn Bay, or to preside at local eisteddfodau but also included are two letters (ff. 14, 19) concerning the injuries sustained by Elias Hughes during the tithe disturbance near Mochdre in 1887 (see Report of an inquiry as to disturbances connected with the levying of tithe rent-charge in Wales (1887), p. 102). Correspondents include Thomas Edward Ellis (1) [1887], John Ceiriog Hughes ('Ceiriog') (1) 1883, Daniel Owen (1) 1886, Joseph Parry (1) 1884, Sarah Jane Rees ('Cranogwen') (2) 1884, 1886, and William Rees ('Gwilym Hiraethog') (2) 1882-1883. Also included are a letter, 1842, to the Reverend William Jones, Amlwch, from David Griffiths, missionary, relating to Madagascar (f. 77), sermon notes in Welsh by William Jones (ff. 80-4), and other miscellaneous items, 1853-1898.

The series comprises letters, 1880-1920, addressed to O. M. Edwards, from his first arrival at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, until the time of his death. Many of the letters are from prominent Welsh public figures. The early letters relate to Edwards's career as a student at the UCW, Aberystwyth, the University of Glasgow and Balliol College, Oxford. Some concern his preaching engagements, his plans and ambitions, while others give local news from the Llanuwchllyn area. Following his appointment as Fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford, in 1889, many of the letters concern his academic work and university responsibilities, and there are numerous requests for references and testimonials from students and former students. Some correspondents write in relation to educational matters in Wales, notably the passage and operation of the Welsh Intermediate Education Act, 1889, and the affairs of the University of Wales. -- From the 1890s onwards many letters concern O. M. Edwards's editing of Cymru and Cymru'r Plant, and later Wales, Heddyw and Y Llenor. Intermingled with these letters are some which refer to personal events in Edwards's life: his marriage in 1891, the death of his father in 1895, and the death of the eldest son Owen ab Owen in 1897. In 1899 many letters concern the death of Thomas Edward Ellis MP, the selection of Edwards as his successor as Liberal MP for Merionethshire, and his brief sojourn in the House of Commons until July 1900. -- Throughout these years the letters abound with references to educational matters, notably within the Universities of Wales and Oxford. Others relate to Welsh literary and cultural matters, the publication of Cyfres y Fil and the organization of Urdd y Delyn. A few letters concern Edwards's researches, writings and academic publications. -- From 1907 onwards many of the letters relate to O. M. Edwards's duties as Chief Inspector of Schools in Wales. Throughout the remaining years there are numerous communications from Edwards's former students at Oxford, invitations to deliver lectures and attend various functions and events, and letters relating to the editing of journals, notably Cymru and Cymru'r Plant. Others concern literary, cultural and publishing matters, and many relate to educational themes. These are interspersed with congratulatory messages on receipt of the Medal of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion in 1915 and a knighthood in January 1916. Many of the letters from the final years refer to O. M. Edwards's personal, health and family problems.

Most of the letters, 1892-1916, are devoted to the writer's researches, writings and editing of Wales, Y Llenor, Heddyw and Cymru for which he solicits contributions from the pen of J. H. Davies. Several letters refer to the death of Thomas Edward Ellis in April 1899, the preparation of his biography and the erection of a memorial statue at Bala. Others relate to J. H. Davies's application for the position of Registrar of the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, and some to Edwards's duties as Chief Inspector of Schools in Wales.

Three fragments mainly containing material in the hand of Morgan Llwyd: a) Sheets out of a notebook containing notes of sermons, one of which is said to have been delivered by 'Mr. Lloyd' [?Morgan Llwyd]. b) A copy (2 pp.) of the verses of lamentation and resolution by the Welsh saints, 1643, comprising ten out of the twenty verses printed by T. E. Ellis in Gweithiau Morgan Llwyd (Bangor, 1899), vol. I, pp. 3-6, in the following order - 1, 2, 5, 6, 3, 9, 8, 7, 14, 18; a version, in the hand of Morgan Llwyd, of the first nine stanzas of a 'Thanksgiving song for Wrexham delivered from pest' (Gweithiau, vol. I, pp. 12-13); notes by Morgan Llwyd, including drafts of sermons, and a list of names (Ens. Roberts, Howell Thom., Ben. Rich., Walt. Thimble., Hugh Prich.) headed by a cancelled sentence - 'who should have the booke of my verse'; twenty-two stanzas beginning 'The lord is kind and merciful ...' in the hand of Morgan Llwyd, being apparently a draft of a poem or of a series of poems by him; thirteen stanzas based on Canticles, in the hand of Morgan Llwyd, ten roughly corresponding to those printed in E. Lewis Evans: Morgan Llwyd (Lerpwl, 1930), pp. 176-8, stanzas 11 and 12 corresponding respectively to 4 and 5 in Ellis: Gweithiau, vol. I, p. 10, and stanza 5 being possibly the basis of stanza 3 in Gweithiau; a transcript of the Canticle verses in another hand; a draft, in the hand of Morgan Llwyd, of the poem 'Hanes rhyw Gymro' (Gweithiau, vol. I, pp. 57-60); and a copy of verse xxviii in Gweithiau, p. 61. c) Draft translations of psalms by Morgan Llwyd. The translations are incomplete, and many stanzas have been cancelled. There are verses translated from Psalms 19, 37, 44-46, 121-122, and 126.
