Correspondence, 1954-1966 (with gaps), including draft letters by Roland Mathias, relating to The Anglo-Welsh Review, including letters concerning financial support, and material, for the periodical. Among the correspondents are Bernard Rands (3); Elwyn Davies (3); Alun Llewellyn; D. Tecwyn Lloyd; Bedwyr Lewis Jones; Roy Bohana; and Alun Hoddinott. The file also contains statements of sales and royalties, 1973, and statements of income and expenditure, 1973-1976, and a booklet describing the constitution, history and finances of the Dock Leaves Press and The Anglo-Welsh Review.

Pembrokeshire county history

Two typescript copies (one draft), [c. 1978], of the chapters, 'The first Civil War' and 'The second Civil War and Interregnum', by Roland Mathias in the Pembrokeshire county history, volume III. Early modern Pembrokeshire, 1536-1815, ed. Brian Howells (Haverfordwest, 1987). Also included are related research notes.

Correspondence, 1977, including draft letters by Roland Mathias, relating to entries by him on Myfanwy Haycock and Kathleen Freeman included in The dictionary of Welsh biography, 1941-1970 (London, 2001); together with typescript copies of both articles.

Cowley, Carlisle & St Clement Danes Schools

The file contains cuttings from the magazine The Cowleian, 1938-1941; together with cuttings from the Carlisle Grammar School magazine The Carliol, 1945-1946; and material relating to the St Clement Danes Holborn Estate Grammar School, including incomplete copies of the magazine The Dane, 1946-1949. Also included is a typescript copy of the 'Account-book of the management of Sarah Cowley's estate', [1942], which appears to have been used for an article by Roland Mathias on the Cowley Trust; a transcript of Sarah Cowley's will, and notes relating to the history of St Helens and Lancashire, 1932, [1938x1942].

The file contains cuttings from the Caterham School magazine, 1926-1938. Also included are essays by Roland Mathias, 1930-1933, whilst at Caterham and Jesus College, Oxford; together with reports, fees and receipts, 1925-1938, mostly relating to his schooldays (with some pertaining to his time at Jesus College); and a school prospectus, [1936-1940].

Miscellaneous papers, 1943-1986 (with gaps), mostly printed material, which mainly reflect Roland Mathias's interests, including press cuttings, 1954-1981 (with gaps), among which are articles by his son Glyn Mathias. The file also contains a notebook of poetry and 'notable pieces of descriptive prose' by numerous writers, transcribed by Roland Mathias, [1935x1960], and illustrated with cuttings from postcards; loose pages containing diary entries for 1961 during his sabbatical term at Balliol College, Oxford (a review of Border country by Raymond Williams is attached), and 1987; papers and notes pertaining to his visit to Brittany, 1970; and a copy of the script 'Drops from the Crochan', 1982, produced by the Usk Valley Project, in which Roland Mathias played the part of Joseph.

The file comprises typescript copies of the D.Phil. (University of California) dissertation by Dora Polk, 'Vernon Watkins: an ambience for reading the "Ballad of the Mari Lwyd" and other poems', 1970; and article, 'Gateways to the vision of Vernon Watkins', published in The Anglo-Welsh Review, vol. 20, no. 45 (Autumn 1971).

The archive described here comprises papers formerly known as the Roland Mathias MSS (originally placed on deposit at NLW and converted to a donation in 1994), together with donations, 1993-2003. It includes mostly correspondence, and papers relating to The Anglo-Welsh Review, his literary works, and professional career as a teacher and headmaster. Also included is a group of personal and family papers, together with works by Dora Polk.
