Maps and plans

The file comprises Cilgwyn maps and plans, found loose, that have been gathered together for convenience. Maps and plans that could be related to other material will be found with that other material. This file includes estate maps, including plans 1-4 from the Cilgwyn sale catalogue, and plans of individual estate properties and developments.

Purchases and sales of property

The file comprises deeds and papers relating to the purchase and sale of property by the estate. The papers include deeds and documents relating to Cillech (77a.) in the parish of Llandyfrïog, 1865-1926, when it was bought by E. C. Ll. Fitzwilliams; agreements for Danherber in the parish of Cenarth, bought in 1892 and sold in 1926; a copy will of the Rev. Thomas Gronow of London, 1870; a sale catalogue for the Gelligadrog estate in the parish of Llangyndeyrn, sold by public auction, 1871; a sale catalogue of properties in the parish of Llangyndeyrn, including Ffoswilkin (36a.) and Tirmwg (4a.), 1917; and papers relating to a sale of Cilgwyn estate properties in Llangeler, 1932. -- There is also a conveyance between Richard Owen of Scarborough, Yorkshire, esq., and Richard Stephenson of Tue Brook, near Liverpool, Lancashire, butcher, of a dwelling-house and shop in West Darby Road, Tue Brook, 1879. The connection between this deed and the Cilgwyn estate is not apparent.

Other estate papers

The series comprises estate deeds and papers relating to the purchase and sale of properties, the sale of timber and firewood, taxes, tithes, and maps, plans, receipts and printed matter.

Estate agent's memorandum books

The series comprises four memorandum books that probably belonged to T. Gibbon, the Cilgwyn estate agent. The dated notes refer to many aspects of estate administration, including applications for and notices to quit properties, applications for rebates, repairs, improvements, lime, gates etc., inspections of properties, woodlands, contractors' work, etc., and notes on the husbandry and crops of specific tenant farmers.

Proposed Llandysul oil depots

The file comprises papers relating to a proposed British Petroleum Co. Ltd combined spirit and kerosene depot at Llandysul, 1922-1923, and a plan of a proposed Anglo-American Oil Co. Ltd oil and spirit depot at Llandysul, 1923.

Notices of increase of rent

The file comprises notices sent to tenants informing them of a proposed increase in rents, and their replies as to whether they were willing to pay the increase, or preferred to go to arbitration.

Bankrupt tenants

The file comprises papers relating to the bankruptcy of three tenants, Thomas Jones of the Drovers Arms, Newcastle Emlyn, licensed victualler, 1916-1917, Daniel Davies of Felindre, Pontantwn, farmer, 1922-1923, and William Thomas of Gelligatrog, Llangyndeyrn, farmer, 1926. The papers include a poster for the sale of the stock, crops, implements etc. of Felindre, July 1922.

Improvements and developments

The file comprises papers, reports, specifications, tenders, plans, accounts, notes and correspondence relating to improvements to estate properties and new developments. Projects include building at the Ivy Bush / Swan, Llandysul, 1913-1914, the conversion of Adpar Laundry into dwelling-houses, 1914, proposed housing for the working classes at Cilgwyn-bach, Llandysul, 1920, the rebuilding of the Drovers Stores, Adpar, 1924-1927, three houses at Bryndioddef, Adpar, 1926, and a proposed diversion of the afon Tyweli at Llandysul, 1927.

Notices to quit

The file comprises copies of notices to quit sent by the landowner, and notices of intention to quit from tenants.

Leases

The file comprises leases, and draft and copy leases, of estate properties.

Copy leases

The file comprises a volume of copy leases of the Cilgwyn estate, 1796-1927. The leases on pages 1-86 (1796-1878) are endorsed as having been examined and certified as being correct copies by Thomas Robertson, March-May 1882. Many of the post-1882 copy leases include plans of the property concerned. -- The volume also includes memoranda of water supply agreements, mainly in the borough of Adpar, 1895-1907.

Rentals

The file comprises a volume of twice-yearly rentals, Lady Day 1934-Lady Day 1941. A number of the accounts have been checked, but do not appear to have been signed off.

The file comprises the settled rental of the Cilgwyn estate, signed by Charles H. L. Fitzwilliams and T. Gibbon, estate steward, 10 Sept. 1923.
