Cases of Lewis Pryse (d. 1779), Margaret Pryse and Edward Loveden Loveden

Papers mainly from legal cases involving Lewis Pryse of Woodstock and Gogerddan, his widow Margaret Pryse, and Edward Loveden Loveden, husband of Lewis Pryse’s daughter, also named Margaret, [post-1753]-1792, and later notes, 1828. They include actions of trespass and ejectment to recover the mines at Esgair Fraith, 1772-1781, and Cwmsymlog, 1791; and actions in replevin, brought by Mathew Davies against agents of the Pryse’s tenant at Bwlchystyllen, 1784-1828. Other disputes concern financial issues between Edward Loveden Loveden and Samuel Wilson Warneford, trespasses on the Gogerddan estate, the title to a mill and debts owed to Thomas Lewes..

A chap-book, entitled Drych y Merched neu Fuchedd Araith am Wragedd yn Ddwy Rann, y Gyntaf yn cynnwys Dull y rhai Ffol, Yr Ail yn cynnwys Cynneddfau y rhai Doeth, containing two songs, in Welsh, written, 1754, by David Jones of Trefriw (1708?-1785) and arranged for printing. The margins of the volume are covered with references to books and manuscripts, in both Welsh and English.

William Rees, curate of St John-juxta-Swansea, Glamorgan (1848-1861), and vicar of Bettws, Carmarthenshire (1861-1865), and Llanboidy, Carmarthenshire (1865-1898), containing quotations and other transcripts from printed sources and material relating to Rees, his family history and to genealogy and local history in the Swansea area more generally.

Ore weighing book showing returns of the mines of Island and Esgair Hir, and ore from Cwmsymlog shipped for Robert Morris of Swansea, 1754-1769. The book also contains numerous childish sketches and writing exercises.

The correspondents are David Morgan of Tal-y-bont and his son, Thomas, about the shipping of ores from the Gogerddan mines, together with a loading ticket, 1754-1755, W. Redknap of the Mine Office, London, listing the directors, 1757-1758, Henry Bowdler of Shrewsbury, 1768, and John Lewes of Carmarthen, 1784. For main content see series description. The mines referred to here are Llanerchclwydau, Cwmsymlog, Goginan, Darren, Grogwynion, etc., and Picton Moor colliery in Pembrokeshire. Several letters mention Chauncy Townsend, and the letter of John Lewes also discusses the Cardiganshire election, 1784.

Account book, 1754-1756, of Charles Cope Trubshaw, architect, builder and mason, relating to work carried out mostly in Staffordshire.
The volume contains accounts, with notes and memoranda, January 1754-February 1756 (ff. 1-70); and estimates, notes and sketched designs and plans for specific projects, 1754-1755 (ff. 70 verso-103, inverted text). There are numerous references to the building of the new parish church at Stone, Staffordshire (ff. 6-89 passim). A few additional items are loose within the volume (ff. 73a, 105) or have been tipped in (f. 104).
