A. G. Moyle, 27 Park Avenue, East Saltney, Chester. Had expected to hear from Huw T. Edwards after the announcement in the press that he was severing his connections with the Labour Party. They will miss his guidance within the Labour Group, above all his ability to state a case. Realises that reaching this decision must have been 'a terrific mental battle' for Huw T. Edwards. Everything has changed so much since the time of the ILP and the old Labour movement in the days of the writer's youth. Is proud to think that it was a Labour government which was responsible for attempting to conquer the scourge of unemployment. But he does regret that capitalism seems to have been strengthened rather than weakened.

A. J. Lush, Chairman of the Welsh Hospital Board, Temple of Peace and Health, Cathays Park, Cardiff. Regrets his inability to attend the dinner to mark Huw T. Edwards's retirement as Chairman of the Wales Tourist Board as he has to be at Oxford. Has asked Provost Trevor Jones to represent him at the function. Huw T. Edwards's period as Chairman has seen a tremendous improvement in the tourist industry in Wales, and this is due in no small measure to his personal efforts. Wishes him well on his retirement.

A. L. Williams, Transport House, Smith Square, London SW1. Thanks for the message of congratulations and good wishes on his appointment. Is somewhat daunted by his prospects, but is encouraged by the expressions of goodwill which he has received from so many good friends. So many things have happened to the writer and to Huw T. Edwards since they first met during the Second World War, and, although they have faced many troubles, the writer believes that they have led very exciting lives.

A. R. Davies, Rhoslwyn, 11 St Denis Road, Heath, Cardiff. Does not believe that the present Prime Minister would be happy to include him as one of the four governmental nominees on the Council for Wales. The writer has been a committed socialist for all of forty years. Is glad that Huw T. Edwards has testified to his services as a past member of the Council. Much hopes that the government will support the Council's recommendations, but is not optimistic. Wishes the new Council well. Hopes that Huw T. Edwards and his family will have a prosperous and more relaxing time ahead. Welsh.

A. W. Ready, Messrs G. Bell and Sons Ltd, York House, Portugal Street, London WC2. Feels that, if the Government made a grant on the basis suggested by the writer, it would provide an incentive for the other bodies mentioned and thus help to solve the problem. But he is anxious that the Government should set the example rather than follow on.

Ab [ ], Bwthyn Arthur, Waen, Llanelwy. Many in the area were shocked by the news of Huw T. Edwards's resignation. It is a novel thing for a Welshman to sacrifice an important position for the sake of conscience. People have been far too ready to compromise and to place personal gain before the good of the Welsh nation. Huw T. Edwards's fellow-Welshmen know of his love for Wales and were delighted to hear on the radio that he is prepared to serve her in future. The leading article in the Liverpool Daily Post paying tribute to Huw T. Edwards. He has brought a reality to Welsh politics. Welsh.

Account book containing the election receipts and expenses of Thomas ap Rhys, the Labour candidate in the Caernarfon Boroughs division in the general election of 30 May 1929. The sitting Liberal MP for the Caernarfon Boroughs constituency was D. Lloyd George. The volume also contains other accounts, presumably deriving from Horeb [? Caernarfon] nonconformist chapel, for 1930-1.

Alan Bullock, St Catherine's Society, Oxford. T. J. Morgan of Cardiff has suggested that the writer contact Huw T. Edwards for assistance with the life of Ernest Bevin which he is writing. Is especially anxious for information on EB's early life. He is unable to read Welsh himself, and so cannot make use of Huw T. Edwards's autobiography.

Alderman George Williams, Chairman of the Welsh Industries Fair, 17 Windsor Place, Cardiff. Thanks Huw T. Edwards for performing the opening ceremony of the Welsh Industries Fair which closed the previous Saturday. His excellent speech and message will be very much appreciated by the people of Wales.

Alderman J. H. Morgan, Lord Mayor of Cardiff, City Hall, Cardiff. Is very anxious to invite Huw T. Edwards personally to the Tryweryn Conference. The Council for Wales and Monmouthshire has also been invited to send two representatives in an official capacity. Hopes that Huw T. Edwards will be able to attend as he is in a special position in Wales and is likely to be able to wield influence at a reasonable and common sense conference. Indeed, the writer intends to nominate Huw T. Edwards for the Chairmanship of the Conference. Hopes that he will feel able to accept.

Alderman T. E. D. Hibbert, Kenmoor, Bistre Avenue, Buckley. He was very touched when the recipient offered to nominate him as his successor as High Sheriff of Flintshire. Felt enormous emotional strain at the time and could hardly utter his thanks to the recipient. Many of their friends and acquaintances could have been suggested in this way. Has resolved to decline this honour - as he has refused knighthoods from both the Labour and the Conservative Governments. The writer and his family will always honour this memory of the recipient's kindly thought. There are but few men big enough to cut across established tradition in this way, and he appreciates this above all else.

Alderman T. E. D. Hibbert, West Court, Bistre Avenue, Buckley, Flints. Is disappointed by the contents of Huw T. Edwards's very kind letter. Was very anxious to pass on the honour [of serving as High Sheriff of Flintshire] to a kindred spirit. Has a great admiration for Huw T. Edwards as the 'champion of the rights of the common people'. Is, of course, very aware of all the time and energy which Huw T. Edwards devotes to public duties, and was much interested to learn of the distinguished honour which has come his way. Has happy memories of the meeting on the previous Friday, and much appreciates the kind letters. Looks forward to meeting Huw T. Edwards and his wife at Chester on the 28th.

Alderman William Hughes, Mayor of the Borough of Caernarfon, Tharsis Villa, Llanbeblig Road, Caernarfon. Thanks for the reply to Huw T. Edwards's letter concerning the supply of a television set for Llangwyfan Hospital. The Executive Committee of the Caernarfonshire T. B. Society has passed a resolution granting this request. Makes arrangements for the purchase of the set and for the presentation at the hospital.

Alex Gordon, T. Alwyn Lloyd and Gordon architects, 6 Cathedral Road, Cardiff, to Wynford Vaughan Thomas, 51 Belsize Avenue, London NW3. Huw T. Edwards has told them that the recipient has acquired a cottage in Mid-Wales about which he would like some professional advice. Although it is difficult to provide a service relating to alterations to existing buildings a long distance from base, they would be very happy to prepare a survey for the recipient, advance proposals and steer this matter through the Local Authority.

Alfred Francis, Independent Television for South Wales and the West of England, 187-93 Oxford Street, London W1. Huw T. Edwards's letter to Sir Grismond Phillips about the role of television in the next general election campaign was read at the meeting of the Welsh Board convened the previous Monday. A committee has recently been set up to inaugurate discussions with the BBC and the Party Whips. An allocation of time for the election broadcasts is being discussed, but there has hitherto been no discussion of the rights of the minor parties in this connection. The ITCA Committee will maintain that Independent Television and the BBC should enjoy the same freedom as the national press in the matter of general news coverage. It is important to ensure that the minority parties are not entirely excluded.

Alun [Llywelyn-williams], Director of the Department of Extra-Mural Studies, University College of North Wales, Bangor. Thanks for the advice. Will write immediately to Denis Forman in the hope that their cause can be couched in as attractive a way as possible. If Granada approaches Huw T. Edwards in this connection, they know that they can depend on him to support the college. Congratulations on the most recent step in his career. There must be hundreds of people who have been disappointed by the pathetic decline in the Labour Party. Perhaps Huw T. Edwards's action will prove of benefit to the Labour Party, but rather doubts whether that will be possible as the damage has gone too deep. Cannot envisage any future for the Labour Party among the young people. Welsh.
