Outline diaries,

Notebooks containing very brief notes of John Herbert Lewis's movements and journeys and of a few important events and appointments.

Pocket and desk diaries,

This series comprises pocket and desk diaries kept by John Herbert Lewis. Their contents vary considerably; some include detailed descriptions of contemporary events, including rich political comment, others have only brief notes of appointments. Some volumes have very few entries and are mostly blank. A few 'diaries' have been used solely as note books by John Herbert Lewis.

Two French manuscripts,

G6 and G7 contain a note by Mrs Kitty Idwal Jones, 'These two books - a French comedy & Poésie de Ermelinda Talia appear to have belonged to R. R. Hughes, possibly of Coed Helen, Caernarfon. At any rate they were bought, with a miscellaneous collection of books, at the Coed Helen Sale c.1948-50. The family seems to have had French connections, & R. R. Hughes may have spent some months in Paris around 1829. I have not gone into the history of the family, but one of the things I bought at the sale was a tea & coffee set of La Reine porcelain, produced by a Paris firm under the patronage of Marie Antoinette, & consequently pre-revolution. K Idwal Jones'.
