The piece was originally composed to commemorate the centenary of Wilfred Owen's birth, and in memory of the composer's friend William Mathias. It was commissioned by the Fishguard Music Festival, 1993, in association with the Welsh Arts Council, and was first performed at the Fishguard Music Festival by Maldwyn Davies, tenor, and the composer.
