Medical recipes and pedigrees

A volume of medicinal recipes and pedigrees written, 1619-[c. 1634], by Richard Salusbury, probably the descendant of Dean Ffowlk Salusbury of St Asaph whose pedigree occurs on ff. 29 verso, 30 verso-31. Except for notes on the inside of the front cover, ff. 58, 59, 119, 126 verso, 128, and the pedigree on ff. 59 verso-60, the hand is that of Richard Salusbury throughout.

'Cywydeu ac Odleu' chiefly by Capt. Thomas Price of Plas Iolyn, Denbighshire; together with indices and proverbs. Pages 9-465, 515-519, 552-562 appear to have been written by the same hand, possibly the author, prior to 31 March 1631, when the Indices (pp. 573-654) were compiled.

A collection of awdlau and cywyddau, including a substantial section of poems ascribed to Guto'r Glyn (pp. 151-300) and Dafydd ap Gwilym (pp. 355-379). The manuscript also includes a copy of Chaucer's Treatise on the Astrolabe (pp. 87-100). Gwenogryn Evans states that pp. 1-22, 335-406 and 410-33 are written in an archaic style in the early part of the seventeenth century, while pp. 23-85, 101-33 and 151-303 belong to the last quarter of the sixteenth century. Other parts of the manuscript are later additions, except the vellum leaf (pp. 305-6).

Commentary on Aquinas

Commentary by an unidentified author on the Prima Pars, the Secunda Secundae and Tertia Pars of St. Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologiae, written in two fine hands of the early-seventeenth century.
Most of the manuscript is written in a secretary hand, whilst two portions are written in a mixed hand (ff. 213-225 verso, 412-424 verso). The commentary may be an example of the manuscript text books supplied to university students during the early-seventeenth century, and perhaps related to other similar works published on the continent during the same century (not seen).

A terrier of Penmaen and Llysfaen

'A terry of the kinges landes in [Penmaen] and llysvaen vewed and written by m[e?] Willm Lloyd of Nanlle in the moneth of June ... 16[07]', ''The names of the freeholders wthin llysvaen Penmaen & Eirias', together with copies of earlier records relating to Penmaen, Llysvaen, and Eirias.

Peredur, Bown o Hamtwn, Mabinogi

The Romances of Peredur (pp. 1-58) and Bown of Hampton (pp. 59-174), together with the Mabinogi (pp. 175-265), transcribed at the end of the sixteenth century. The text is a direct copy of Llyfr Gwyn Rhydderch (Peniarth MSS 4-5).

Dares Phrygius a Brut Tysilio

A sixteenth-century manuscript containing the associated texts of Dares Phrygius and Geoffrey of Monmouth's Brut Tysilio.

Descriptio Angliae et Genealogiae Regum Angliae

Two tracts - (a) a description of England, in fifteen chapters, compiled in 1445, beginning 'tractatus iste compendiose extractus de diversorum historiographorum diversis ... describit Angliam ... '; (b) a genealogical chronicle in the same hand projected from Adam to Brutus and from Brutus to Henry VI, but in execution brought only to Edward I, with a continuation in a sixteenth century hand to Henry VIII (1518). The pattern of this genealogical chronicle is that of the Promptuarium Bibliae attributed to Petrus Pictaviensis. The text begins 'Adam in agro damasceno ...' (cf. Thomas Jones, Y Bibyl Ynghymraeg (Cardiff, 1940), p. xiii) and has lines added for the Saxons, kings of Britain, princes of Wales, the different divisions of Saxon England, kings of England, princes of Demetia, princes of Venedotia, &c.

A composite manuscript containing a miscellany of Welsh triads, proverbs and religious poetry written in the late sixteenth century.

Transcripts of Welsh cywyddau, incorporating 'Llyfr Mr Robert Wynne o'r Berth Ddu' (p. 19). The manuscript includes blocks of poetry ascribed to Dafydd ap Gwilym (pp. 387-405) and Guto'r Glyn (pp. 652-670), and associated with Wiliam Gruffudd of Penrhyn (pp. 493-589).
