The notebooks contain notes made by Gareth Jones. The earliest ones were kept while he was a student at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth and Trinity College, Cambridge, and are mainly linguistic in character. Later notes are often political commentaries and observations on international developments - in Europe, America and Russia. There are also many travel notes commenting on the countries where he travels and the people whom he meets. Some were kept while Gareth Jones was in the employ of David Lloyd George, based at Churt, and acting as a researcher for the compilation of Lloyd George's War Memoirs.
