Letter from Chhakan Singh Nanak Matheli,

I would like to report that the Nawab after marching from here reached Murshidabad on Friday 27 August and entered the fort in the morning and held his durbar there. His courtiers and employees came to present themselves and their nazrs to the Nawab. Later after having his dinner he took some rest and in the afternoon came to Sadiq Bagh which is situated in the city. After enjoying the atmosphere of the garden he returned to his palace in the evening and had his evening meal. Two pieces of parvanahs, one with a box addressed to you and the second addressed to Rasikh Jang Bahadur, were issued and given to harakaras to deliver them to the recipients. I hope you have received the one addressed to you by now.

Chhakan Singh Nanak Matheli.

Letter from Ghulam Husain Khan,

I am delighted to have received your letter and the news that you have arrived back at Murshidabad and that the Rajah of Tanjore has achieved a great victory over the French with the help of [East India] Company forces. Please accept my congratulation on this great victory.

Ghulam Husain Khan.

Letter from Nandakumara, sent on behalf of Qasim Ali Khan,

I had come from Murshidabad to Calcutta with the hope that I would receive sympathetic and kind consideration to my request that I may be appointed to the post of military administrator of Rangpore. I was disappointed at your lack of consideration, especially when I have always served you faithfully. I will be grateful if the above post may be taken away from Qasim Ali Khan and bestowed on me. I pray for your good health and prosperity.

Nandakumara, Maharaja.

Letter from Amir Beg Khan,

Refers to his concern to receive news and mentions hope to arrive after 1st Muharram [i.e. 4 September 1758].

Amir Beg Khan.

Letter from Tilok Chand,

I have received the schedules from the two Nawabs and subsequently I have submitted details of my previous and present accounts to Mr Hastings and the other Nawab Sahib. He has now collected all revenues and reached Anbuh on the 10th of Bhadun. Because of the illness of my grandmother I had to delay my arrival there. I therefore sent Divan Ramchand and his assistants to Burdwan to arrange for the payments of wages of the soldiers and write to me. However, Rajah Rajbalab Sahib did not have the fifty thousand rupees he was required to pay. He has referred the matter to Murshidabad saying that he used to pay two Lac rupees to the two persons every year. The two officials have also written their statements and have sent them to Murshidabad. I am sending my vakil, Kishn Gobind, to explain the details to you. -- Another, contemporary translation of the contents is CC2/2, entry no. 77.

Tilok Chand.

Letter from Nandakumara,

Rajah Ram Singh [Governor of Midnapore] arrived here today, i.e. Tuesday. He had brought with him two drafts of fifty thousand rupees. I informed Amir Beg Khan that Rajah Ram Singh says that he will deposit this sum only after he was assured that he would be restored to the Risalahdarship. Amir Beg Khan replied that the case of his appointment to risalah would be decided only if Clive and Amir Beg Khan would write to the Nawab Sahib for this. I could recall two hundred horsemen and five hundred artillery men under the charge of a friend of mine, Mir Sulaiman, and make him in chrage of this force but Rajah Ram Singh did not accept this offer saying that he had nothing to do with this risalah. Amir Beg Khan advised me that I should refere the matter to you. I will be awaiting for your decision on this issue. Meanwhile, on mid-day on Sunday I came to know that Rajah Tilokchand, a zamindar of Burdwan, with his men was obstructing our employees in sending government money and their passage to reach you. Therefore, I have sent a force of twenty five horsemen and one hundred soldiers to Burdwan to bring Ramchand Diwan and `q Majmuhdar Gokal. Later it was revealed by these two that the Deputy Diwan Raghu Indar was behind this mischief. They have now instructed their staff not to obstruct our messengers. I request you to send me a letter in English for Mr Scrafton who is in Muradbagh saying that he should recall his men he had sent to bring money to Burdwan and that he should not receive any money in Muradbagh. -- Another, contemporary translation of the contents is CC2/2, entry no. 83.

Nandakumara, Maharaja.

Mir Jafar, Nawab of Bengal.

Letter from Nandakumara,

I have already sent you my report on the district. I hope you have received it. I have so far been able to collect twenty five thousand rupees as revenue from Arcott. This has been sent to the treasury. For the collection of the rest I have appointed men in each corner. Whatever is collected will be sent to you. Ramdev Naik reached here yesterday. The cavalry and foot soldiers that were called in by Diwan Ramchand to Burdwan with the treasury have now returned and will be sent to you soon. I am enclosing a letter from Amir Beg Khan. I hope you will be able to reply soon. I would like to assure you that I am trying my best to collect the revenue from the districts of Hoogli, Nadyah, Burdwan, Nachli, etc. -- Another, contemporary translation of the contents is CC2/2, entry no. 85.

Nandakumara, Maharaja.

Letter from Amir Beg Khan,

I would like to bring to your notice that Raja Ram Singh came with his associates to see me and complained that I do not allow my army to provide protection to my Hindu subjects. I replied that I do not consider myself separate from the army of Mir Sulaiman Sahib. At this he asked me to provide him with a contingent of two hundred cavalry and five hundred musketeers. I did not agree to this. He will no doubt write to you complaining. I will request that until I come to see you and explain the matter you delay any answer to that request. Amir Beg Khan.

Letter from Shitab Rai,

Congratulation on your appointment as the head of Calcutta Council. Previously I had sent a letter along with a reply of Nawab Vazir al-Mumalik to your letter through Mr Amyatt/Amhurst Sahib. I am concerned that I have not received a reply as yet. Now I have received another letter, dated 14th Dhu al-Hijjah, from the capital in which Daler Singh Bahadur has reminded that he has, on the assurances given to him by me, strengthened the friendship/ sar-rishtah-yi bandagi at the courts of Asamanjah and Nawab Vazir al-Mumalik. Therefore, when the request of the French Officer Monsieur Bhonse/ Thonse arrived at the court through the sons of the late Asafjah he did not reply. Now Rajah Sahib has strongly reminded me that you should send your reply, along with the letters of Rajah Thakur Mall Bahadur, as soon as possible. I have already written to you that Raja Ram Prashad and business agent/gumashtah of Jagat Seth were very annoyed when they did not receive replies to their letters promptly. -- Enclosure 1: It has been reported from the capital that after the arrival of the Marhatta army Ahmad Shah Abdali went back to Kabul and died there. Now Vazir al-Mumalik has changed his mind and has diverted his attention towards Bengal. He is waiting for the Prince [Ali Gauhar] to start some mischief. -- Enclosure 2: Please convey my salam to Mr Watts.

Shitab Rai.

Letter from Amir Beg Khan,

I am sending a pair of good-looking horses for you through Mirza Fazil Beg. I will be grateful if you will inform me when he arrives there. I hope to come and see you soon.

Amir Beg Khan.

Letter from Mir Jafar,

Nearly a month ago when I visited Calcutta I decided to go to Murshidabad. Because of the security and ill intentions of traitors this news was not made public. A number of harkarahs, however, knew about it but as no one trusts the words of harkarahs nowadays, we did not give any serious thoughts to it. After reaching Murshidabad I went to pay a visit to the Mausoleum and asked commanders Khvajah Muhammad Hadi Khan and Mir Muhammad Khan who are both in your service to place guards on the doors of the Imam Barah. At the night of 9 Muharram when I was at the house of Nawab Nasir al-Mulk Bahadur these two commanders, who from the very start were bent on treachery, brought in nearly thirty to forty thousands armed men and stationed them inside and outside the Imam Baraha. At the time I was coming from the house of Nawab Nasir al-Mulk I was unaware of this happening and started in my palanquin with only a few men to guard me. With God's help on my side I did not take the prescribed route and escaped unharmed from the place. After the discovery of this plot I asked an enquiry to be held to find out the true perpetrator of this plot. My enquiry has shown that the above-mentioned two commanders were guilty of this felony. I am asking you to dismiss them from your service and from their commands. As they are beyond my territory, you may decide to give them whatever punishment you think they deserve. -- Another, contemporary translation is CC2/3, entry no. 95.

Mir Jafar, Nawab of Bengal.
