A new romantic anthology

The file comprises papers relating to A new romantic anthology, ed. S. Schimanski & H. Treece (London, 1949), in which the chapter 'Welsh poetry' was selected and introduced by Glyn Jones. Included are manuscript drafts of his introduction, 'Romanticism and Welsh Poetry', and transcripts by Glyn Jones of selected pieces by various authors. The file also contains a draft letter by Glyn Jones to Dylan Thomas, letters, 1945-1946, from publishers and literary agents, and a letter to Lynette Roberts.

The Oxford companion to the literature of Wales

The file comprises papers, 1978-1982, 1984-1985, relating to The Oxford companion to the literature of Wales (Oxford, 1986), mostly manuscript and typescript drafts of articles for the book. Also included is correspondence, 1978-1982, 1984, including draft letters by Glyn Jones and letters from Ron Berry, Gwyn Jones (photocopy), John Petts (2), John Pikoulis (2), Hywel Francis, Lynette Roberts (signed Lynette Rhys), Brynmor Jones, Meic Stephens (not all signed by him, 8), Gwyn O. The file comprises manuscript and typescript drafts together with printed copies of articles by Glyn Jones, 1953-1993 (with gaps), a number of which were published in Poetry Wales and Bulletin of the Welsh Academy. Included is a review of poetry readings at the Casson Theatre, Cardiff, 1973; articles on John Elwyn, 1976, 'The Beach of Falesá', 1977, John Petts, 1977, and 'Some letters of Idris Davies', 1980; the foreword to Elwyn Davies, Mild majesty (Llandysul, 1987); tributes to Gwyn Thomas, 1981, Keidrych Rhys, 1987, George Ewart Evans, 1988, and John Ormond, 1990; and a draft, notes and correspondence, 1980-1982, relating to an article on Gwyn Jones which appeared in the Dictionary of Literary Biography: British Novelists, 1930-1959 (some papers also pertain to the entry for Glyn Jones in this reference work). -- In addition, the file contains newspaper cuttings, 1960-1961 and 1963, of articles, reviews and poetry by Glyn Jones (arranged and numbered by him); they include a review of the poetry festival, Poetry at the Mermaid, 1961, and cuttings of poems and articles by various writers from the Saturday Magazine section of the Western Mail, 1960. Also included are typescript copies and cuttings of articles by six Anglo-Welsh writers, including Glyn Jones, each of whom wrote a chapter as part of a thriller serial which was published under the title 'Sextet' in the Western Mail, 1961, with related letters.

Reviews and reports of books

The file comprises mostly manuscript and typescript drafts, 1952 and [1966]-1991 (with gaps), of reviews by Glyn Jones which appeared in various journals. Also included are evaluation reports of unpublished works, mainly for the Welsh Arts Council. Some of the reviews are accompanied by draft covering letters whilst others are written on papers pertaining to Yr Academi Gymreig.

'The Sleeping Bard'

The file comprises copies of the radio script 'The Sleeping Bard. Readings from 'The visions of the sleeping bard' by Ellis Wynne, with commentary by Glyn Jones', broadcast in three parts during May 1952. The scripts contain numerous amendments and some additional manuscript notes. Also included are four letters from Aneirin Talfan Davies regarding the programme, 1952. In addition the file contains a copy of the script 'Cornel y Llenor. "Gweledigaethau'r Bardd Cwsg" gan Elis Wynne', by D. Gwenallt Jones, 1951.

Jack Jones

The file includes papers, [1950]x1971, 1977, pertaining to Jack Jones. These include drafts of a script, together with related notes, for a television programme about Jack Jones, 1977; notes by Glyn Jones of works by Jack Jones; a draft script, 1963, which appears to be a radio programme about Merthyr, illustrated through extracts of the works of Jack Jones and Glyn Jones (in the latter's hand); and a draft script by Glyn Jones about the life of Jack Jones [1950x1971].

The file includes certificates awarded to Glyn Jones, 1911-1912, 1914-1916; desk diary, 1952; curriculum vitae, [c. 1955] and [c. 1980]; a printed copy of Divertimento for oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon by Alun Hoddinott, dedicated 'to Glyn Jones on his 60th birthday' and signed by the composer, 1965; copies of the running order for the Welsh Union of Writers' tribute to Glyn Jones, held at the Chapter, Cardiff, 1991, with Harri Pritchard Jones's introduction and an address by Glyn Jones; copies of the Order of Service at his funeral, [1995]; and membership cards, programmes etc. of various societies, including The Phoenix Club and The Cardiff Writer Circle, 1952-1968 (with gaps).

The file comprises papers relating to the degree of Doctor in Litteris, honoris causa awarded by the University of Wales, 1974, including Professor T. J. Morgan's presentation of Glyn Jones, and related letters and cards. The correspondents include C. W. L. Bevan, Vice-Chancellor, University of Wales, J. Gareth Thomas, Registrar, University of Wales (6), Raymond Garlick, R. Brinley Jones, John Rowlands (2), Elwyn Davies, A. G. Prys-Jones and a card by John Elwyn. -- Also included is a programme for the degree ceremonies held at the University of Wales, Trinity College, Carmarthen, 1993, with a typescript address which appears to have been delivered by Tudor Bevan, who presented Glyn Jones to an Honorary Fellowship of Trinity College.

Correspondence: Gwyn Thomas

The file comprises correspondence, 1981-1982, including draft letters by Glyn Jones, mainly regarding the purchase of the manuscripts and books of Gwyn Thomas by the National Library of Wales, and the publication of a proposed volume of the short stories of Gwyn Thomas by the Poetry Wales Press (Glyn Jones being one of Gwyn Thomas' literary trustees). Drafts of letters are written on various manuscript and printed notes, including some papers pertaining to Yr Academi Gymreig.

The file contains miscellaneous printed material, 1947-1993 (with gaps), which mainly reflect Glyn Jones's interests, including press cuttings, [1900]-1989 (with gaps), and invitations to various exhibitions and other events, [1954]-1991 (with gaps). Some items contain references to Glyn Jones. The papers include an 'Advance list of subscribers' to the magazine Wales, 1947; and an English literature exam paper which includes the poem 'Linnet' by Glyn Jones, 1966.

The series comprises papers, 1814-[1995] (with gaps), pertaining to various members of Glyn Jones's family, including his parents and paternal grandfather David William Jones ('Llwch Haiarn').

'Llwch Haiarn'

The file comprises papers, [c. 1858]-1900 and 1936, pertaining to David William Jones ('Llwch Haiarn'), paternal grandfather of Glyn Jones. These include poetry in his hand, 1863x1897, which appear to have been composed by him and a number of which were entries for local eisteddfodau; a notebook dated 1862; two Valentine cards; a framed memorial card, 1900, which contains englynion by other poets as tributes to 'Llwch Haiarn'; and a newspaper cutting, 1936, which contains a reference to him.

Welsh voices

The file comprises papers, 1966-1967, relating to Welsh voices. An anthology of new poetry from Wales, ed. Bryn Griffiths (London, 1967), mostly correspondence between Glyn Jones and Bryn Griffiths which includes lists of poems for the anthology (one letter also contains observations regarding the Aberfan disaster). Glyn Jones appears to have acted as consultant on behalf of the Welsh Arts Council during the compilation of the anthology.
